Иван Антонович Ванко, or Ivan Antonovich Vanko (also known as Whiplash), is the main antagonist of the 2010 Marvel action film, Iron Man 2, the sequel to the original film Iron Man.
He was a disgrunted physicist and son of the late Anton Vanko, who was Howard Stark's partner affiliated with the Arc Reactor's creation. After his father was deported for greed, and passed due to his illness, he vowed revenge against the Starks by going after Tony Stark, and using his technology (including Hammer's) to rival against him.
He was portrayed by Mickey Rourke.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He replicated his father's and Howard Stark's Arc reactor, so that he would position himself to Tony Stark's level by technology.
- He terrorized the Circuit de Monaco, or also known as the Monaco Grand Prix, where Stark was attending. While searching for him, he attacked several cars during the race, until knowing one of those cars was Stark's.
- He would've successfully killed Stark as revenge's fulfillment until Happy Hogan and Pepper Potts arrived to crash and pin him to the fence, giving Stark enough resources to stop him properly.
- He believes Stark would still die a horrible death while he is in prison for life, due to having palladium in his chest, so he taunts Stark of his fate while being confronted.
- He killed his own prison cellmate, and a guard who was doing his job, while trying to escape moments before he exploded his own jail cell.
- Despite being aided by Justin Hammer out of prison to work with him, he betrays him by hacking his drones during the Stark Expo in his own presentation, simultaneously hacking Colonel Rhodes' War Machine against Tony Stark as Iron Man, who was willing to warn him about provisionally deceased Vanko's involvement with Hammer.
- He revamped his Whiplash suit using Hammer's drone materials to overpower War Machine and Iron Man during the Battle at Stark's Expo, to which War Machine's special rocket, and both their weaponry failed against it.
- Upon his slow death, he activates his self-destruction sequence, along with his other drones to explode in unison. Once the self-destruct sequence times up, he destroyed several locations (along with causing some casualties unless everyone evacuated already) of the Expo and would have killed Potts if Stark did not arrive in time to save her.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- Having been another of Iron Man's arch-enemies, he fails the heinous standards to Aldrich Killian who did much worse than him.
- He has a remarkable tragedy with his father Anton Vanko, who was disgraced by Howard Stark and even mourning his death, making this factor a big motivator for his crimes and it was played for sympathy.
- He is capable of displaying legitimate affability sometimes.
Trivia[]
- He's the only villain in the Iron Man trilogy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to never be considered Near Pure Evil, as the Iron Monger used to be considered Near Pure Evil until it was considered he fails the heinous standards too much and Aldrich Killian also used to be considered Near Pure Evil until a tie-in comic was brought up which gave more depth to his crimes which allowed him to be full-on Pure Evil.
