ā | So admit it... Don't I look cool in the game screens? Those long, muscular legs on my sturdy, toned frame... I'm the perfect specimen of a man! ...What!?!? You say I look fat and my quadruple chin looks like a waterfall of flab? Shut up! That's just because you have your television set up for widescreen display! | ā |

~ Wario's most famous catchphrase. |
Wario is a supporting character and anti-hero in the Mario franchise, while also being the titular main protagonist of the Wario franchise. He is the avaricious and selfish version of Mario, seeking various ways to best his arch-rival or gain as much money as possible. While initially starting off as a villain, he eventually fledges out to be more of an anti-hero, going on various adventures to satiate his greed.
He was voiced by Charles Martinet.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- In Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, he hypnotizes all of Mario Land's citizens and scatters all of the six golden coins out of greed and jealousy. He also ends up taking over Mario's castle and imposes himself as its ruler.
- After Mario collects the six golden coins, Wario attempts to defeat his rival.
- In Wario Blast, in his ending, he blows up Bomberman's land and steals all of its treasures.
- In the Wario Land franchise, while Wario does various heroic deeds (like saving the music box world, freeing the genie, and frees Princess Shokora by defeating the Golden Diva), these are not out of the goodness of his heart, but for mostly unintentional reasons in order to gain as much money as possible.
- In Wario Land: Shake It!, after saving the Merfles from the Shake Dimension, when Queen Merelda congratulates him, Wario throws her away and takes the Bottomless Coin Sack to his home.
- Chases Merfle and attempts to assault him when Captain Syrup steals the Bottomless Coin Sack and Merfle explains the truth.
- In the Mario vs. Wario comic, he attempts to kill Mario in revenge for bullying him twenty years ago. During Peach's birthday, he attempts to ruin Mario's gift by trying to switch it up with an ugly doll.
- In Wario's Woods, he takes over the Peaceful Woods and sends various creatures to stop Toad. He also insults Toad in various ways and taunts him when he loses.
- In WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, upon finding his own video game company and realizing the success of it, after having his friends help make the micrograms, he attempts to swindle from them and runs away with his profits.
- Knocks down the Sewer Guru in WarioWare: Touched! while trying to find his video game console.
- As Wario Man, he tried to crush a train with his strength.
- In WarioWare Gold, he hosts a ten-million-coin gaming competition with a steep entry fee, but selfishly spends the pot on himself and doesn't intend to pay his employees.
- In WarioWare: Get it Together!, he is the ultimate cause of the creation of the Bugs and him and his friends getting sucked into a game and endangered, because of his crummy programming and poor attempt to fix it.
- In Mario Power Tennis, he along with Waluigi work with Bowser to sabotage the tennis tournament to get revenge on the Mario Bros for losing the first match.
- In Mario Super Sluggers, he and Waluigi fire a Bullet Bill cannon at Mario at the ending sequence. If Bowser hadn't deflected the Bullet Bill, Mario may have gotten severely hurt.
- With the exception of Waluigi, Mona, and Jimmy T., barely anyone actually likes him since in Mario Super Sluggers he only has good chemistry with Waluigi.
- In the Super Smash Bros Brawl trailer, he lets out an atomic fart on Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, Meta Knight, Pit and Samus, which possibly may have killed them.
- In The Subspace Emissary, he turns either Princess Peach or Zelda and Ness into a trophy, while also trying to turn Kirby and Lucas into trophies as well. Unlike Bowser and Ganondorf, who work for Master Hand, Wario does his acts with no loyalties to anyone. When Dedede frees him from being a trophy, Wario tries to take revenge on him for stealing his trophies before Dedede, Ness, and Luigi point out Tabuu's plan, forcing Wario to turn against Tabuu.
- While he sometimes works for Bowser, this seems just to be out of pragmatic reasons, such as to upstage Mario.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- While he passes the baseline thanks to his personal villainy towards Mario and the numerous atrocities he has committed, he fails the heinous standard of the franchise to Bowyer, who froze Rose Town's citizens. Resources donāt help as Wario has some power upgrades while Bowyer hardly has any.
- He is given numerous comedic moments even in his villainy, with his defeats in various games involving him throwing childish tantrums being portrayed for laughs. His avarice and egotism is also frequently played in an over-the-top manner, with him being so greedy to the point where he becomes incompetent.
- He is on-and-off, as he is an anti-hero more often than not and has some admirable deeds, such as saving the music box world and undoing the brainwashing to its citizens, as well as stopping Terrormisu from stealing the souls of everyone in the planet.
- His backstory and defeat in Mario vs. Wario is played for sympathy, as his rival Mario almost always got his way as the sheriff when playing cowboys, their favorite game. When Wario was the sheriff, Mario made fun of him. When Mario defeats him, Wario breaks down crying, with Mario cheering him up before kickstarting another game of cowboys.
- He has several people who he cares for.
- He has a genuine friendship with Waluigi, with both of them shown to partner with each other frequently in their schemes, and never betray each other. Their friendship is so strong, some fans have even mistaken them for brothers.
- He is really great friends with Jimmy T., who is his childhood friend and has been his "texting buddy for forever", and he is grateful that Jimmy taught him how to increase the company's "follower" count.
- He cares for Princess Shokora and was humbled when she kissed him.
- He may care for Toadette, since they are listed as "Secret Friends" in "Mario Party 6".
- He cares for his fellow employees in his company, as despite being unwilling to pay them fairly and treating them poorly sometimes, he praises them for their talents and even keeps a picture with all of them in WarioWare Gold.
- Despite his rivalry with Mario, he is willing to put aside his differences with him in kart-racing, party and sports games, and even occasionally assists him in defeating Bowser.
