ā€œ Germany has declared war on the Jones boys. ā€ž
~ Walter Donovan providing Germany to declare war.

Walter Donovan is the main antagonist of the 1989 action-adventure film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the third installment in the Indiana Jones film series.

He was a wealthy American industrialist and collector of antiquities who allied himself with the Nazis in order to get the Holy Grail, which he sought for its fabled gift of immortality. Assisted by Ernst Vogel and Elsa Schneider, Donovan ends up in conflict with Indiana Jones, Henry Jones, Sallah and Marcus Brody in order to gain the Holy Grail.

He was portrayed by Julian Glover.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

  • He manipulated professor Indiana Jones into beginning a search for the Holy Grail, coming off as an affable man.
  • He allied with the Nazis for his own benefit.
  • He has personal villainy by shooting Henry Jones Sr. which would have permanently killed him had Indy not found the Grail in time.
  • He hired an army of Hatay Soldiers after convincing the Sultan to let him cross the land in exchange for valuables.
    • He proceeded to carelessly send some of these soldiers into the temple to find the Grail, with them all failing, and didn't hesitate to send more knowing they would die.
  • After being tricked by Elsa into drinking from a false grail that caused him to rapidly age to death, he tried to kill her out of revenge but was stopped by Indy.
  • While his death was horrific, it wasn't played for sympathy since he brought it on himself and deserved it to a certain extent for siding with the Nazis and shooting Henry.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • He massively fails the heinous standard of the Indiana Jones franchise, as there are villains who did far worse than him with lower resources, with his personal villainy being the only reason he passes the baseline.
  • He is quite dimwitted, as he almost knew nothing about the Holy Grail despite his main goal being to pursue it.
    • An example being how he believed Elsa found the right one just because she was an archeologist.
    • If he did a small amount of research he would have known a cup belonging to a carpenter wouldn't be made of gold.
  • His true motives for getting the Grail are unclear, as it is only made evident he wants to be immortal, not help the Nazis rule the world.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Indiana Jones villain to be a Villainous Benchmark
