Vector, real name Victor Perkins, is the main antagonist of Illumination's 1st feature film, Despicable Me, the main protagonist of the short film Mooned, and a minor character in Despicable Me 4.
He is a young, aspiring supervillain and the son of Mr. Perkins, the president of the Bank of Evil, as well as the first villain to fight Felonious Gru. He is one of Gru's archenemies and also the reason why Gru became a hero and adopted Margo, Edith, and Agnes.
In the film, he was voiced by Jason Segel. In the video game adaptation of the film, he was voiced by Jason Harris Katz.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- In the opening, he steals the Great Pyramid of Giza offscreen, replacing it with a giant inflatable replica, which is deemed the greatest crime of the century. This caused every country in the world to become paranoid and overprotective over their artifacts, as they were worried what he would steal next, and it also led to Gru's plot to steal the moon in order to surpass Vector's theft of the pyramid.
- He inadvertently endangered a kid named Justin as he jumped off of it and could've fallen to his death had it not been for his father saving him.
- This also led to El Macho kidnapping many of Gru's minions and mutating them into killing machines with PX-41 in his attempts to dominate the world with Gru due to being inspired by Gru's theft of the moon, making Vector indirectly responsible for the events of the second film.
- He steals the shrink ray from Gru and shrinks Gru's ship with Gru and two Minions inside out of revenge for having his head frozen.
- When Gru tries to steal the shrink ray back, Vector has the house's security system constantly attack Gru until the latter thinks of a different plan, although it can be argued he does this out of self-defense since Gru was trespassing.
- One of these attacks involves firing a number of missiles at him in an attempt to not just send him away but take his life, only to learn how supernaturally durable he is.
- When Margo, Edith, and Agnes arrive to give him cookies, he threatens to fire missiles at them, even though none of the girls have done anything to provoke him, but called them off after they offered him cookies.
- After Gru launches his rocket to steal the moon, Vector hitches a ride in order to hit Gru with his squid gun and steal the shrink ray again.
- Still determined to spite Gru, he sneaks into the girls' dance recital, kidnapping the trio in hopes of receiving the moon from his rival. This shows he subverted being affable to the girls.
- When Gru discovers the ransom note, redeems himself, and surrenders the moon as promised, Vector double-crosses him, deciding to keep the girls as his hostages, showing he has no honor in the slightest.
- He attempts to kill off Gru with missiles to stop him from rescuing the girls before cowardly taking off in his escape pod with both the moon and the girls.
- When Margo tries to jump from Vector's escape pod to Gru's ship, Vector snaps and quickly grabs her in order to keep him from rescuing her, highly aware that his ship is about to explode and kill both of them thanks to the regrowing moon.
- Due to this, Margo has to cling for her life onto the grappling hook wires while panicking and hyperventilating as she waits for Gru to rescue her, risking his life in the process, and once the wires break off the claw, Gru and Margo would’ve fell to their deaths had the Minions not saved them.
- He was constantly mean to Bob the minion that was on the moon, even though he did nothing wrong.
- His escape attempt from the moon resulted in four minions getting stranded on Mars, where they would have likely had to spend the rest of their lives had they not been saved. While he didn't intend to strand them, he didn't show remorse for it.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- Even though he has a good deal of personal villainy towards Gru and was willing to murder children before they become heroic characters (meaning he passes the baseline), he fails the heinous standard of the films compared to Balthazar Bratt, who tried to send Hollywood into space, and Scarlett Overkill, who attempted genocide against the Minions, both with similar resources. In addition, while stealing the moon would cause several tsunamis to happen around the world, this isn’t brought up at all (and it's extremely debatable if Vector had a clue about the tsunami thing to begin with). However, since he was partially responsible for Gru having to face other villains, he doesn't fail too much.
- Despite his great intelligence, he is incompetent and constantly played up for laughs, with scenes like him getting blasted in the face with a tiny toilet he shrunk and receiving a comedic defeat in the first film. Since Despicable Me is a highly comedic franchise, Vector isn't really taken seriously in-universe.
- He was originally genuinely affable towards Gru, as he tried to befriend him; that is, until Gru froze his head out of sheer spite, making his hatred for Gru understandable.
- He cared about some people:
- He cares for his father, as he does his villainous deeds under his orders and sincerely wants to please him. He’s also shown happily dancing with him at the end of Despicable Me 4, showing he still cares for him.
- He cares for his pet shark, as he was shocked when Gru hit him, and nothing indicates he said that out of pragmatism.
- Even if there's no indication he redeemed himself, he happily dances to the song Gru and Maxime Le Mal perform in prison, implying that he no longer has a grudge against Gru.
- He is a scapegoat, as he gets stuck on the moon and later on Mars and was left for dead for a very long time while not knowing that the Minions were trying to help him because he doesn't understand their language. Throughout most of his screen time even right before permanently getting stranded on the moon, he is also subject to numerous brutal slapstick comedy .
