You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
~ Harvey Dent's most famous quote, also foreshadowing his transformation into Two-Face.
The world is cruel. And the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased… unprejudiced… fair.
~ Two-Face as he rants about his own vigilantism.

Harvey Dent, better known as Two-Face, is the secondary antagonist of the 2008 film The Dark Knight, the second installment of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy.

He was portrayed by Aaron Eckhart.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

  • Even before he became evil, he was still morally questionable with how he did things. After interrogating a schizophrenic Joker thug, he would flip his coin to decide whether he would spare him or kill him, only to be stopped by Batman who told him it was not right.
  • After being convinced by the Joker not to kill him as revenge for the Joker killing Rachel, he decided to take revenge on everyone else who helped kill Rachel by flipping a coin and killing them if it landed on tails.
    • He was also about to kill the Joker and while the latter completely came through, he only did so by flipping a coin, leaving him to run away with a smile when the coin landed on head.
  • He killed Michael Wuertz by shooting him after his coin landed on tails. Even though this was illegal, and he should have just captured him, Wuertz still deserved it due to kidnapping Harvey and causing permanent damage to his face.
  • He flipped the coin on Maroni, and it landed on heads, only for him to flip the coin on Sal Maroni's driver and killed him after it landed on heads, causing Maroni's car to crash and presumably killing Maroni due to Maroni not wearing a seatbelt.
  • He held Gordon's family hostage so he could kill the person Gordon loves most as revenge for Gordon failing to save Rachel, even when Gordon explained why he didn't save her.
  • He refused to forgive Gordon after the latter constantly apologized for not listening to him and accidentally causing Rachel's death.
  • After Batman tried to convince Harvey to stop by telling him to "judge the people responsible", he shot Batman after his coin lands on heads and tried to shoot himself only for his coin to land on tails.
  • He tried to kill Gordon's son, the person Gordon loves most, just to spite him despite the fact that Gordon didn't do anything to purposely hurt him to begin with.
  • Even after his death he caused great damage to Gordon's image and Bane used the incident to launch an attack and takeover of Gotham City, and he prevented Gordon from saving Gotham.
  • While he's far less heinous than the Joker, he has lower resources and thus doesn't have to be compared to him.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • While his personal villainy towards Batman and Gordon are enough to pass the general baseline, he still fails the high heinous standards of the series to Bane.
  • He is too tragic, as he was a morally upright and affable district attorney who happened to lose his girlfriend Rachel to Joker and he would be willing to do anything to avenge her death, even if he has to resort to murder. What makes matters even worse is that Joker turned him against people who had less to do with it while being directly responsible for Rachel’s death.
  • He genuinely loved and cared for Rachel, as his entire motivation is about avenging her death.
  • He is honorable, as the people his coin spares are let go (although he still assaults them).
  • His sanity may have been compromised due to his trauma, in addition to the damage to his head. This makes him delusional and has damaged moral agency.
