“ | You're all a bunch of f*cking assholes. You know why? You don't have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your f*cking fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." | „ |
~ Tony Montana's drunken rant to the people at the restaurant. |
Tony Montana is the titular main protagonist of the 1983 crime film Scarface.
Once a humble refugee from Cuba, Tony Montana eventually climbed the ranks of the criminal underworld to become one of the most powerful drug kingpins in Miami, and he himself is arguably one of the most iconic villains in all of film history.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He kills Emilio by stabbing him in the stomach with a knife while serving as an assassin.
- After they reneged on the deal, Tony killed Hector by shooting him in the head and killing one of his goons beforehand. Though to be fair, Hector deserved it for brutally killing Angel, Tony's friend and for trying to rob them with his goon.
- When spotting his sister, Gina, in the club going into the restroom with a man, he split them up and proceeded to physically abuse her by smacking her to the floor, albeit out of overprotective instincts about her before having Manny take her back to the car.
- After killing 2 assassins who were hired by Frank Lopez to kill him, Tony had Manny kill Frank in cold blood even after he begged for mercy and then proceeded to kill Mel Bernstein himself afterwards.
- After marrying Elvira, he would end up getting into a bit of a toxic relationship with her, often getting into arguments about her and began ruining her by activating and motivating her addiction to cocaine. He eventually snaps at her for being so depressed, causing her to throw a mental breakdown at a restaurant in an argument with him.
- When Alejandro Sosa hires him to help one of his assassins kill a journalist who was going to expose them for their criminal activities, Tony willingly takes it. While he ends up saving the journalist due to there being a family with him, it's worth noting that this indicates that he would have helped out with the act and end up getting the journalist killed had he not brought his wife and kids with him.
- He shoots Alberto in the head, though he did deserve it for being willing to kill the journalist with his wife and kids.
- When he sees Gina with his best friend, Manny, he kills him by shooting him twice out of anger.
- After Sosa's men end up entering the house and kill his guards, he allows his most trusted man Chi-Chi to die at their hands even though he was right at his door.
- He ends up killing a lot of the men Sosa sent to his house. While this is technically out of self-defense, he did challenge Sosa on the phone in spite of the potential risks and shoots at some even when they give up shooting and he does basically challenge them to come to him so he could kill them and doesn't do anything to escape the situation.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- Dealing drugs and killing dozens of people is the baseline villainy a crimelord is capable of doing. Especially considering the setting of Scarface, where gangsters and drug dealers are everywhere in the city of Miami, Tony doesn't do anything unique to stand out among other criminals in the story.
- He has a genuine tragedy and is too sympathetic to be NPE with his father having left the family when Tony was young, with him growing up with his family in poverty, which would serve as a motivator for his character throughout the film and his whole evolution to a drug lord can be argued to be seen as sympathetic and an "Alas, poor villain" representation.
- He has people he cares for, such as his mother and sister, Gina, as he was shown trying to give them money to help them out after arriving to their house after 5 years apart from them and doesn't argue with his mother and instantly complies when she yells at him to leave the house and take his money with him, while secretly giving Gina some of the money. While he did abuse Gina a bit at the club, it was only to keep her away from men like him and because he doesn't want her to go down the same path he is going.
- He is shown to have a genuine friendship with some people as shown by how he instantly avenged Angel's death by killing Hector after escaping from his clutches for it.
- He is shown to be genuinely in love with Elvirina as while he does develop a toxic relationship with her, he still shows some affection of his own like telling a person he called to tell her he loves her.
- He was shown to be loyal to Frank at first, trying to help increase his distribution.
- He shows a bit of a pet-the-dog moment allowing Ernie to get a job from him after killing off Frank and Mel with no pragmatic explanation being given for this.
- He has standards against killing families and children as he furiously killed Alberto to stop him from blowing up the journalist’s car when he found out that he brought his wife and kids with him.
- He showed remorse over killing Manny.
- His death was played for sympathy with there being dramatic music playing in the background while his body is shown in front of a statue saying "The World Is Yours", portraying how he got what he wanted but not in the way he wanted in a sympathetic manner and painting his death as somewhat of an "Alas, poor villain" moment.
Trivia[]
- His original counterpart Tony Camonte isn't a Villainous Benchmark since his crimes are much more heinous and is not as sympathetic.
