Thomas "Tommy" Vercetti is the protagonist of Rockstar Games' 2002 action crime game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the second installment of the Grand Theft Auto 3D universe.
He was a former member of the Forelli Crime Family who was framed by his boss Sonny for 15 years of prison for killing 11 men. After getting released, he moved to Vice City as an independent criminal mastermind. After first moving to the city, he got ambushed in a failed drug deal, he then escaped and sought to find the man who set him up, as well as to build his reputation among Vice City.
He was voiced by the late Ray Liotta.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- When Sonny sent his men to assassinate him, he quickly killed all of them, which consisted of 11 members, resulting him in a 15-year prison sentence.
- After moving to Vice City, he then immediately conducted a drug deal with Victor Vance, which ultimately failed due to many mercenaries hunting him down.
- He destroyed two jurors' cars and threatened them to bail out Sonny Forelli's cousin, Giorgio.
- He beat up a chef named Leo Teal to death and stole his phone, after not getting any information from him.
- With the order of Mr. Black, he then murdered a lot of people, this included a woman, a businessman, and several robbers who planned a heist before they take action.
- He blew up an under construction building, which contained several workers, with a remote-controlled helicopter for Avery Carrington.
- He stole military technology chips for Juan Cortez, from a man named Gonzalez, and then killed him.
- After knowing Diaz was the one who set him up, him and Lance went to his mansion and brutally killed him, he eventually took over his mansion and started his own drug empire. (Although, Diaz deserves it.)
- He stole a tank during a military convoy under high surveillance, resulting in the deaths of several soldiers.
- He took over several businesses, such as the Cherry Popper Ice Cream Factory, the InterGlobal Films and the Print Works, all just to boost his drug empire's business growth speed.
- He blew up a store in the mall, causing the deaths of two soldiers.
- He caused chaos in the city as requested by Mitch Baker.
- Him, alongside his crew, robbed El Banco Corrupto Grande bank, resulting in the deaths of several security guards and SWAT officials.
- He was neglectful towards Lance Vance, as a result, Lance distrusted him and turned on him. (To be fair, Lance was working for Sonny even before meeting Tommy for the first time.)
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- Although he has done enough crimes to make him pass the baseline, he still fails the massive heinous standard of the 3D Universe of GTA franchise, as it contains a lot of criminals who enjoyed doing crimes for the sake of it, also considering Tommy was a well-endowed character with his own drug empire and several businesses in Vice City. He especially failed to many protagonists with less resources, such as:
- Carl Johnson, who buried a man alive and caused a gang war among Los Santos, as well as massacring many innocent cops in his criminal journey.
- Toni Cipriani, who brutally dismembered a butcher and sold his flesh in his own butchery, as well as bombing an entire district containing thousands of innocent people.
- Tommy is On and Off as he has done many admirable acts, such as killing Diaz as revenge of the death of Lance's brother Victor Vance, ending Sonny Forelli's crime family, stopping the Psycho Stalker from endangering Love Fist, killing six members of a European gang to foil a bank hit, and even helping the Cubans to end their more evil rivals. This would make Tommy being an anti-hero at best.
- If Tommy had not kill Sonny, the latter would expand his criminal empire not just only both Vice City and Liberty City, but also the entire United States of America as a whole.
- Being the foil of Sonny, Tommy only limits his criminal activites in city wide scale.
- If Tommy had not kill Sonny, the latter would expand his criminal empire not just only both Vice City and Liberty City, but also the entire United States of America as a whole.
- Although it's very unexplored and rather shallow in the game, Tommy nonetheless has a slightly sympathetic backstory that holds up. He wasn’t able to be a printer just like his father, instead becoming a criminal from a young age, is implied to have had a bad relationship with his mother and his partnership with Sonny resulted in his subsequent betrayal and fifteen-year imprisonment, which contributed to Tommy's short-tempered attitude.
- He is also an affable and honorable gangster, capable of forming genuine friendships with other people who did not threaten or endanger him, such as his best friend Ken Rosenberg, Colonel Juan Cortez, Kent Paul, Mercedes Cortez, Love Fist, Lance Vance (before his subsequent betrayal), Earnest Kelly and Phil Cassidy.
Trivia[]
- Tommy Vercetti was known to be inspired by Tony Montana. Although Tony was qualified as Inconsistently Heinous, Tommy is not, because he had to compete with many more heinous characters in Rockstar Games' 3D Universe.
