~ The Master |
Ada, better known as The Master, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Juliet Chau) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
She an extremely powerful Dark One who serves as the Master of the Abbot Monastery. Her goal in life is to gather as many Dark Ones from across both the Badlands and the Outlands so that they can be trained as Abbots to control their Gift and keep it hidden from the rest of the world. In the process, she is willing to resort to morally reprehensible actions to achieve her goal and even kill young Dark Ones who try to escape.
She was portrayed by Chipo Chung.
Her Evil Ranking[]
Her Villainous Deeds[]
- She abducts young Dark Ones across the entire world from both the Badlands and the Outlands, bringing them back to the Monastery and training them to become Abbots against their will.
- If a member of the Monastery tries to escape, the Master has her Abbots track them down and bring them back so they can be put into a coma, which Eli describes as feeling like an endless nightmare.
- The coma can be fatal to those who are put into it, while this isn't the Master's intention, she knows it can happen and doesn't stop doing it despite the consequences, and is confirmed to have killed Tate through this process.
- After M.K. and Ava try to run away from the Monastery, the Master sends Cyan, Dury, and Ramona to track them down and either put them into a coma or kill them, which ends up happening as Cyan kills Ava.
- While it's done for the sake of defeating Pilgrim, she abducts the Widow and forcefully brings her back to the Monastery to enlist her help in defeating him.
Why Doesn't She Stand Out?[]
- She suffers too much from off-screen villainy. The majority of the worst actions committed by the Monastery are carried out by Cyan, Dury, and Ramona, the three best Abbots who are fiercely loyal to her. Very rarely is she actually shown participating in the Monastery's villainous actions, and in the rare cases where she participates in conflicts such as her battles against the Widow and Pilgrim, those are cases of Evil vs. Evil, whereas the deaths of young Dark Ones that are put into a coma relies too heavily on fridge horror, as Tate is the only confirmed victim, and one victim is not nearly enough to reach the incredibly high heinous standards of Into the Badlands.
- She is a well-intentioned extremist, as her actions do help to keep the dangers of the Gift away from the rest of the world, and she does try to take down those who would use the Gift for the sake of conquering the world, as seen in her mission to defeat Pilgrim. She also begins to shed many of her worst attributes during the war against Pilgrim, making amends with the Widow and Bajie.
- In her final moments she does come to regret the fact that she ended up being another tyrant in a world already full of them, and even hopes that the Widow is successful in her mission to change the world for the better, telling her to create a world where there are no more masters.
Trivia[]
- The Master is the only Villainous Benchmark from Into the Badlands who's villainous actions actually meet the heinous standards of Pure Evil villains such as Magnus, but is held back from being anything above a Villainous Benchmark due to her villainy being almost entirely off-screen. The majority of the other Villainous Benchmark's are Outright, and the few that are only barely above the bog-standard.
