Do you know what it's like for a child to be told you'll never be good enough? No, you don't. What you said to me all those years ago made me realize who I really was. And you know something? I am not pure of heart.
~ Sivana to the Wizard before releasing the Seven Deadly Sins.
The weapons of men draw no blood from our kind. The only thing that extinguishes magic is... magic. Time to transfer your powers to me.
~ Sivana confronting Shazam.

Doctor Thaddeus Sivana is the main antagonist of the 2019 DC Extended Universe superhero film Shazam! and a minor antagonist in its 2023 sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods. He is a vengeful scientist who was rejected by the Wizard Shazam and is bent on stealing Billy Batson's powers for himself to unleash chaos on the world.

He was portrayed by Mark Strong.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

  • While it could be argued that he has moral agency issues due to being influenced by the Eye of Sin, this excuse doesn't hold up his actions and motivations for killing his father and stealing Shazam's power were entirely his own even before he took the eye.
    • Even if the eye was influencing him, it wouldn't matter much since he knew it had the power to corrupt people but chose to use it anyway.
  • After being rejected by the wizard, he became obsessed with finding him again and taking his power for himself, even though it was arguably his own fault for not being pure of heart.
  • Showed no concern when his colleague, Dr. Lynn Crosby, was disintegrated.
  • He stole the Eye of Sin from the wizard, fully aware of its evil nature.
  • There are no indications that he sees the Sins as anything more than pawns.
  • He trespassed into his father's boardroom and threw his own brother out the window to his death. He then had the Sins kill everyone else in the room, including his father.
  • He tried to steal Shazam's power on multiple occasions, with him at one point taking his family hostage.
  • He attacked Shazam at the carnival, damaging property and endangering people's lives.
  • He teamed up with Mr. Mind while in prison.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • While he did murder 14 people, murder is an extremely common crime for the DCEU, and there have been villains who managed to achieve higher kill counts with comparable or less resources.
  • His and Mr. Mind's plan for world domination relies on Fridge Horror, since it isn't confirmed that it would be violent or horrific.
  • He has a genuinely tragic backstory of being abused by his father and brother, making his hatred for them understandable.
  • While taken more seriously than the rest of the film, he still has a few comedic moments, such as Shazam not being able to hear his monologue or his reaction to Mr. Mind leaving him in his cell.
