Surge the Tenrec is a major villain in the Sonic the Hedgehog IDW comics. She was a tenrec who was abducted by Dr. Starline and brainwashed into wanting to kill Sonic the Hedgehog.
Her Evil Ranking[]
Her Villainous Deeds[]
- Surge used to bully Kit, even threatening to drown him with his tails at one point. She made no effort to find Kit when they were separated after Issue #50.
- Under Starline's orders, her and Kit started a forest fire at the Forest Ridge Zone Campground because Amy and her friends were vacationing there and Starline wanted to weaken Sonic by making him suffer a tragic loss, putting hundreds of lives in danger.
- Along with Kit, she caused an energy surge in Central City and threw the power grids into disarray.
- For her final test, Starline had Surge and Kit help him take over Egg Base Alpha, and she destroyed a lot of Eggman's robots in the process.
- After learning what Starline had done to her and Kit, she decided she wanted to kill all of the heroes and villains, and burn down every town that celebrated them, because if she didn't have a past, they couldn't have a future.
- Her and Kit only feign loyalty to Starline afterwards because he has a plan to bring Sonic, Tails, and Eggman together, and plan to kill him once they kill Sonic and Tails. Although considering the heinous nature of what Starline did to them, he arguably deserved it.
- Once Sonic arrived in Eggperial City, Surge attacked him and tried to kill him, and rejecting the chance at redemption that Sonic gave her.
- After surviving her defeat by Sonic, Surge decides she needs more power and steals Eggman's prototype Dynamo Cage, before attacking Central City.
- When Whisper fought her to defend Central City, Surge uses the Dynamo Cage to absorb 4 of Whisper's 5 Wisps to power herself up and beats Whisper so severely she has to go to the hospital afterwards, as seen in Issue #58.
- When Sonic and Tails show up to fight Surge, she shoots them out of the sky.
- When Sonic is powered up by Whisper's one remaining Cyan Wisp, Surge absorbs it, and when Sonic tells her that the Wisps are thinking, feeling creatures, Surge bluntly tells him she doesn't care and continues trying to kill him.
- When Sonic arrives at Starline Base Sigma and peacefully asks for her to hand over the Dynamo Cage, she says it's not up to him, and fights him, ignoring his attempts to talk her down and almost killing him before the Dynamo Cage explodes.
- After being approached by Clutch, Surge agrees to help him infiltrate the Restoration in exchange for him telling her about her past and came up with a plan to have her and Kit pretend to reform and join the Restoration to infiltrate it.
- Under Clutch's orders, she presses a button to sabotage the Extreme Gears of Sonic, Tails, and Amy, causing them to be disqualified.
- When Whisper attacked her due to Mimic’s manipulation, Surge fought back.
- After Clutch refuses to accept her resignation, she creates a storm using her powers putting people’s lives in danger because of her anger about being bossed around.
- During the final event of the Clean Sweepstakes, she attacks the Phantom Rider, while also electrocuting Tangle when she tries to intervene, and publicly unmasks him as Sonic the Hedgehog to everyone, while yelling that the Phantom Rider is destroyed, just like Clutch ordered her to.
- Her and Kit threaten to hurt Mimic if he stays with them, and plan to go to the Restoration Shuttle to get revenge on Clutch. (Although Clutch and Mimic both deserve it)
- Her and Kit attack Clutch as well as Sonic and Eggman’s mech when they interfere, refusing a temporary alliance with Sonic and severely electrocuting the three of them before leaving after Eggman takes Clutch with him, promising to kill Sonic another day.
- While she wants to genuinely become a hero after the events of Issue #75, she still wants to kill Sonic, and is fine with killing Tails to make Kit happy.
- She ended up injuring people when she stopped a runaway trolley car and hurting a little boy’s wrist.
- While her trauma is played sympathetically, it still doesn't excuse her actions, as Sonic and Tails point out.
Why She Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- Surge fails the high heinous standards of the Sonic universe, as mass murder, even of the scale she planned to, is very common there. While starting a forest fire put hundreds of lives in danger, it was done under Starline's orders while he had her brainwashed into being loyal to him, making her fail the heinous standards to him.
- She is a villain by proxy considering that Starline subjected her to 232 brainwashing sessions and erased her memories, and Clutch forced her to be evil when she tries to back out of his empire.
- Her brainwashing gives her some moral agency issues. While she does willingly continue being evil after her brainwashing, she still has impaired agency since Starline’s programming is still inside of her and affecting her, even after he’s gone.
- She is way too tragic to be considered Near Pure Evil, as she was kidnapped by Starline, had her memories erased, was brainwashed into hating Sonic, and turned into a cyborg. While it doesn’t excuse her actions, it’s still played for sympathy, and Sonic and Tails genuinely feel bad for her and Kit. This also makes her a scapegoat.
- Despite her previous bullying of him, Surge does care about Kit and is touched when he hugs her when she has a hallucination of Starline. She's angry at Starline for what he did to Kit as well as her, and is concerned that Sonic, Tails, and Eggman will hurt Kit in issue #55. Over time, she becomes genuinely affable to him.
- After she receives hero worship from fans for fighting off the Phantom Rider in issue #71, she starts to have second thoughts about pretending to be good and begins warming up to the idea of "earning" her heroism. Her and Kit even attempt to quit working for Clutch in Issue #72, but he shuts them down by blackmailing them.
- She’s On & Off, as she stops a runaway trolley car in the 2024 Annual out of a genuine desire to help people.
- She becomes honorable over time and only wants to kill Sonic, Tails, and Eggman while also saving other people. She also lets Sonic go in Issue #75 since it wasn’t a real fight and she wants to defeat him on equal terms.
- She has standards, as even she thinks Clutch is being overdramatic by bringing down the Restoration Shuttle and allows Sonic to live so he could save everyone.
Trivia[]
- Since she has returned in the latest ongoing story arc, Surge has the potential to become more heinous in the future, but also has the potential to redeem herself.
