Starlight Glimmer is the tritagonist in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, starting as the main antagonist of the fifth season who first appeared in the season premiere "The Cutie Map" before she redeemed herself in the season finale "The Cutie-Remark".
She is the former leader of an unnamed village near the edge of Equestria, where everypony forced to give up their special talents for the sake of friendship, until the Mane Six arrived and exposed of what a tyrant she was. However, she travels back in time to ruined the Mane Six's friendships so everything in Equestria will go in her way.
During the confrontation, she admitted that she lost her childhood friend Sunburst after he got his cutie mark which left her alone and heartbroken for this. Sympathized with her, Twilight convinced her to turn over a new leaf and took her in as her student, inspiring her to learn more about the true friendship.
She was voiced by Kelly Sheridan.

Her Villainous Deeds[]
- While her backstory is meant to be played for sympathy, it doesn't hold up for several reasons:
- Instead of congratulating Sunburst for getting his cutie mark and moving on from their friendship, she let her jealousy and sadness consume her, which is what made her turn evil in the first place. Even after she got her cutie mark, it did nothing to change her mind and realize the fallacy and hypocrisy of her anger. Plus her lack of effort to contact Sunburst proves she abandoned him just as much as he abandoned her, further proving it doesn't hold up at all.
- Her actions almost outweigh her tragedy since she made people’s lives miserable and also refused to show remorse when she turned Equestria into a barren wasteland.
- Furthermore, several other characters suffered similar, if not worse backstories and didn’t become evil like she did:
- Moondancer also got left behind by a friend (Twilight Sparkle), and while she did (somewhat understandably) temporarily become an antisocial jerk, she didn’t turn into a nihilistic control freak like she did.
- Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo also struggled with cutie marked ponies like Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon bullying them for being "blank flanks" and never turned evil.
- Gallus also never became evil, despite having a tragic backstory which was arguably much worse than Starlights since he was an orphan who was abandoned by his own family and had a very lonely childhood. He also said he felt like he never had a place in Griffonstone, implying that no one even bothered to take care of him.
- Discovering a spell that could removed cutie marks from ponies and replaced it with equal sign, this inspired her into created her own society where everypony would live in "equality" and she thought it was the easy way to "make friends" without her fear of losing them.
- Covering her cutie mark and replaced with an equal sign as an illusion of convincing everypony to give up their special talents and cutie marks in order to live in "equality", despite the town doing nothing to warrant it, and ultimately it's just her xenophobia towards cutie marked ponies instead of a dream of equality considering she despises the idea of any pony but her having a cutie mark.
- Convinced Double Diamond to give up his passion of skiing in order to join her cause.
- Removing everypony's cutie marks and stored them inside the cutie mark vault to convinced them into live in "equality".
- As the leader of the village, she enforced them into follow their rules of her own ways while living in "equality" without their cutie marks. They have to eat terrible-tasting foods, wearing bland-looking clothes, and have similiar manestyles. In order to avoid Starlight's wrath, they have to cover up their suffering by doing their wide grin on their faces.
- However, Starlight is likely saw through their fake smiles and understand how they truly felt, while took her delight of seeing their misery and how powerless they are. Just in case if anypony could turned back on them, she lived in a house at the end of the village with a secret passage. By extension, it turns out that her horrendous treatment of the other ponies into her way of angrily lashing out at everypony else with a mindset if she can't be happy, then no one can.
- In addition, she covers up her incredibly loud snores while sleeping every night by lying to everypony that it was the pack of bears attacked them.
- Stealing the Mane Six's cutie marks from them and stored them inside the vault because she sees them as a threat to her village's lifestyle, in addition of forcing them to live in "equality". She then imprisoned them inside a house until they agrees.
- Threatened Fluttershy to not tell everypony about the cutie mark vault.
- After Party Favor said that he is the one who's responsible for the vault, she locked him inside the house where the Mane Six is in.
- After her deception was revealed, she angrily refused to take responsibility over this and hypocritically claimed that she created a harmony, but everypony was furious over her lies before she quickly retreated.
- Bringing the Mane Six's cutie marks out of spite and attempt to hide them in the caves behind her village.
- Tried to shoot her former followers with her large magic beam for giving the Mane Six's cutie marks back to them.
- Even after her defeat, she still refuses to admit her mistakes and claimed that she brought everypony real friendship, but Double Trouble reminds her that she never give them a chance.
- After infiltrating into School for Gifted Unicorns to learn more about how the Mane Six get their cutie marks, she used an altered version of Star Swirl's time travel spell in order to travel back in time where Rainbow Dash performed her first Sonic Rainboom and prevented her from doing so, this led her of creating several alternate timelines, even if Twilight tries to prevent Starlight from doing so.
- When Twilight brought her to an apocalyptic future in Equestria, you can see everything has turned into a barren wasteland and presumably have the millions of lives be annihilated if the villains were succeeding on destroying them, which has what happened if she keeps meddling during her time travel. However, she refused to acknowledges her actions and never cares over what has happened despite her brief shock, not before she angrily revealed her backstory and explained that she will be abandoned again after anypony gets their own cutie mark if she tried to make another friend, which Twilight finds it ridiculous.
- Attempted to rips off the scroll that contains the time travel spell so Twilight could never be able to go back in time again as she has enough of her getting in her way, but not before she was quickly convinced to turn over the new leaf and redeemed herself.
Why She Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- Her worst actions of indirect mass destruction and implied mass murder were unintentional since she never intended for them to happen, and they both rely on Fridge Horror anyway since it's unknown if everyone died from it or simply went to live somewhere else because of their home being now a wasteland.
- She fails the heinous standard of the fourth generation of My Little Pony to Queen Chrysalis who abused her children, tried to drain her son's love and was more than willing to let the Windigos turn Equestria into a frozen wasteland, King Sombra who enslaved the Crystal Empire and Ponyville, destroyed the Tree of Harmony and placed everypony in Ponyville and Canterlot under his mind control, the Storm King who intended to destroy Canterlot with a massive tornado and tried to turn the Mane Six into stone, and even Sunset Shimmer who broke up the friendship between the human versions of the Mane Six and attempted to destroy them with a fireball, all of whom have less resources and power than Starlight.
- Despite her stubbornness and being heartbroken at Sunburst's friendship, she was convinced to redeemed herself and decided to accept Twilight's offer of friendship aside of remorse, which she became one of main characters in the series.
- While her backstory doesn’t really justify her actions at all, it’s still implied that it was meant to be played for sympathy since it came off as rather sad when she explained it to Twilight.
