Stannis Baratheon is a major character in A Song of Ice and Fire book and the adaptation series Game of Thrones. He is the head of "House Baratheon of Dragonstone", Lord of Dragonstone, Master of Ships on Robert's Small Council. He is the younger brother of Robert Baratheon, and older brother of Renly Baratheon. He married to Selyse Florent and has one daughter, Shireen.

He was portrayed by Stephen Dillane.

  • Punish his loyal knight ser Davos Seaworth, about he helping for pirate and cutting his fingers tip.
  • He tried to kill the young Daenerys and Viserys at Dragonstone, but they had already fled south.
  • After his brother die he let to the Red Priestess Melisandre to help him take the iron throne with Human sacrifices and burning idols.
  • Punish his men when they disagree for his choise to join Melisandre, invlude his brother in-law, Axell Florent that burned alive by Melisandre on his agreed.
  • Resist to a possible accomplices to overthrow the Lannisters, like his brother Renly and king the north Robb Stark. his resistance destroyed all the rebellion and cost many lives.
  • Adultery with Melisandre.
  • He orders Melisandre to kill his brother, Renly and then taken his men except the Tyrell (that join to the Lannisters).
  • Try to conquer King's landing by his army, even after all his ship exploded by Wildfire plot. He even knows that this cost on thousands lives.
  • After he fail the war he going to choked Melisandre to death, but he stop becouse her answer.
  • Then he burning many sinners for Melisandre.
  • Arrested Davos when he threat on Melisandre that mocking him and lock him on dungeon.
  • He orders to locked his nephew, Gendry for do a leech ceremony with him and then was going to sacrifice him.
    • The leeches ceremony itself, although it is not clear if it had any effect, was intended to kill the 3 kings who were his rivals: Joffrey Baratheon, Robb Stark and Bailon Greyjoy. Even if he wasn't responsible for their deaths, he was certainly happy when the first two died (Baylon in the series version was killed shortly after his death).
  • After Davos run Gendry away he nearly executes him, only Postponed the sentence to let him succeed in getting an army.
  • Executes by burning alive Mance Rayder when refused to bend the knee for him, though he didn't punish Jon when it mercy killed him instead.
  • He compares Jon honor to Ned Stark, but when the latter thanks him he tells him that it is not a blessing at all, showing what kind of man he has slowly become.
  • Try to fight on the Bolton that take the north from him and try to recruit Jon Snow for avenge his brother, Robb. this very Hypocritical as Stannis himself want Robb to get killed.
  • After the Boltons burning some tents and caused great damage at night he suspected the guards on "associate with the enemy" and ordered them to be hanged.
  • sacrifice by burning alive him daughter, Shireen even her mother Resist it and later commit suicide.
  • He might have punished Melisandre if she had stayed in the camp for organizing the sacrifice.
  • Finally he was so desperate for achievement that he decided to fight the Bolton army when his army was exhausted, causing the last of his soldiers to die, as well as himself.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • He pass the baseline in his crimes, but he fails the standards that other villains like Tywin Lannister or Roose Bolton that have similar resources.
  • He has some love for his family, especially for his wife Selyse and has one daughter, Shireen as he cured her of a serious illness and also asked her to forgive about her sacrifice.
  • He a grey zone vilain, also been a hero (or fallen hero in the series), and he have Good relations with several heroes like Jon or Ned Stark that he called him: "man with honor".
  • He is played sympathetically for some moment, like when he has three children that died at birth (accept Shireen that also have a greyscale) and he also was the rightful King after Robert (Gendry was a bastard, not a true Baratheon) but him brothers and prevented from being worthy only because of his tough personality and lack of charisma. he also Manipulated by Melisandre that he is "The Prince That Was Promised".
  • He is affably Evil that sometimes Receives rebuke from his close advisors, especially from Davos or Jon, that kill Mance Rayder on mercy and Stannis didn't punish him.
  • He has some respect, even about himself acting as he Admits that he accepts his duty, big or small, even he didn't excited to be king. his death also cause him to be a respectful to Brienne of Tarth and agree her to do her duty.
  • He also feels regret for some of his acts like about please forgiven from Selyse on the adultery with Melisandre. He even eulogy his brother Renly, about the young boy he was before the war.
  • He's also disgusted from his nephew: Joffrey Baratheon or from Cersei and Jaime.
  • Although he is usually presented seriously there are exceptions, for example his attempts to correct people on grammar.
