How simple you make it—light and dark, as if there is one without the other.
~ The Son to Anakin Skywalker.

The Son is the main antagonist of the Secrets of Mortis arc in Season 3 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. He is one of the immortal Force-wielding beings known as the Ones, and serves as the embodiment of the dark side of the Force, born over a million years before the events of the series.

He was voiced by Sam Witwer, who also voiced Galen Marek and Emperor Palpatine in The Force Unleashed games, and later voiced Darth Maul in The Clone Wars and Rebels series within the Star Wars franchise. Sam Witwer also portrayed Ben Lockwood in Supergirl, Doomsday in Smallville, and Neil Perry in Dexter.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

  • Prior to the story arc, he never stayed loyal to the Father since he went astray with his selfish desires.
  • It is implied he killed all of the inhabitants of Mortis when he and his family members moved in.
  • As soon as the Chosen One arrived and his sister was guiding the Jedi on Mortis, the Son intervenes and crushes their path.
  • He manipulated Obi-Wan and Ahsoka to hide in shelter after hiding their ship from sight so that they can't escape Mortis.
  • He took form of Anakin's mother Shmi in an attempt to trick him.
  • Even though Anakin did have an unhealthy attachment towards Padme, he urged and tried to manipulate him to let go of her so that he can fulfill their destiny.
  • He captures Ahsoka in the Chosen One's test and tries to manipulate Anakin over giving into his inner Dark Side.
  • In Anakin's sleep, he tries to corrupt him into the Dark Side several times which backfires.
  • He kidnaps Ahsoka and turns into a small alien that bites her and poisons her to the Dark Side.
  • He is responsible for making Ahsoka turn against her friends for a little bit and trying to kill them. After she steals the Dagger from the Daughter, he then drains her life force, killing her with no remorse, showing that even if Dark Ahsoka intentionally wanted to help him, he was a horrible boss towards her.
    • He is also responsible for making Dark Ahsoka self-loathing and prone to having anger issues due to his corruption.
  • He tries to kill his Father, which causes his sister to intervene and get stabbed instead. This causes the force to be brought out of balance and Mortis to be plunged into darkness and turned into a wasteland. Although he does show remorse for accidentally killing his sister, he shows no remorse for plunging Mortis into the Dark Side until later on.
  • He successfully corrupted Anakin into the Dark Side by showing him his future. Afterwards, he tries to use this as an advantage to leave Mortis and return to the Galaxy, with Dark Anakin threatening to kill all of the Jedi in order to establish peace over the galaxy. While this did backfire since the Father removed Dark Anakin's recent memory of what happened, he is still aware of what soon to be Dark Anakin would do in the future which eventually happened, with Anakin actually destroying almost all of the Jedi Order and he doesn't show remorse for any of his future crimes he'll do even if he was alive to see them happen.
  • He gets the Dagger of Mortis from his sister's grave and tries to kill all the heroes one last time before the Father ultimately chooses to stab himself and strip him from his force powers.
  • He is so much of a threat that the Father had to contain him in Mortis so that he can't corrupt the entire Galaxy. Nevertheless, the Father hardly gave him enough discipline and he still embraced the Dark Side without any restraint. If he were to succeed, not only will the Galaxy be plunged into darkness, but also there will be no balance in the force with no Jedi to maintain peace across the galaxy as any force of the Light Side would've been wiped out and everybody would act just like Dark Ahsoka and Dark Anakin. He also knew that many Jedi will be killed through Darth Vader even if he failed to do it, but despite the fact that Anakin rejected the Son, he still knew about these dangers and didn't even bother to stop them.
  • He is also responsible for the destruction of the Lothal Temple since if you make a fist in front of his hand on the mural, it causes it to sink for good and therefore preventing any future force-sensitive Lothalians from having a place nearby to explore their force powers. This is what happens when Ezra does that, although this was necessary since Minister Veris Hydan was seeking several answers from that temple for Palpatine and Thrawn to discover.
    • He displays sentience like the other Mortis Gods on the mural since he is aware of Ezra's presence and is able to move when activated.
    • Although he shows sadness over having to sink, it was over him and his family no longer having a presence on Lothal rather than for any of the force-sensitives that might be on the planet.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • Even though his worst crimes do pass the baseline, he suffers too much from Fridge Horror since it's never confirmed how bad him killing the original inhabitants of Mortis, plunging the galaxy into darkness, killing all the Jedi or Sith, or unstablizing the force is, due to the fact that the extent of his crimes have not been explored in depth. Furthermore, he never intended to kill his sister.
  • He fails the high Star Wars heinous standards since his worst act was trying to corrupt Anakin, which backfired since the Father erased his memory of the future, and only Palpatine succeeded in doing so. Not to mention, none of his actions had an impact on the story at all.
  • He fails the individual capacity too since his heinousness is severely limited by his Father restraining him and his high amount of redeeming qualities he could've subverted to reach his full potential of being evil.
  • He has severe moral agency issues due to being the embodiment of the Dark Side of the Force (and to an extent, the Satan and demon categories as well), meaning he can only do what is wrong and cannot do what is right since it is in his nature to do what is bad. Due to this, he cannot qualify as PE or NPE.
  • He is very tragic since he genuinely wanted to be freed from Mortis as he believed that it was a prison for him and he wanted to take his Father's place as ruler of Mortis after years of waiting for his role just to escape from it.
    • This makes him a scapegoat to an extent since he was born a prisoner of Mortis and died as one due to never having the ability to leave and do what he wants.
  • He is affable towards Anakin, since the only reason he made an offer towards him to reject Padmé was because he wanted him to reach his full potential.
    • He's not wrong over this since Anakin's attachment over Padmé had always been nothing more than a selfish desire and unhealthy obsession than a relationship.
    • He also wanted to change Anakin's dark future for the same reason, and he's also not wrong in that any of the Jedi are corrupt since Jedi Masters like Mace Windu and Ki-Adi Mundi are already very corrupt in nature and they only prove his point. Additionally, the Jedi Council, threw Ahsoka to save their repution with the Senate again proves his point and failing to teach Anakin humility which prevented him from getting the rank of Master.
  • He made a genuine offer towards both his father and the Jedi to join him in the new world he will create and was upset when they refused.
  • He is an extremist since he believes his actions can bring peace to the galaxy by eradicating all of the Jedi and Sith.
    • Once again, Jedi like Mace Windu and Ki-Adi Mundi, as well as even Darth Sidious, prove his point.
  • He loved and cared about his sister, since he shows remorse and shock over accidentally killing her when he intended to kill the Father.
  • He ultimately shows remorse for his actions, too much to be NPE, after seeing his Father commit suicide and taking away his Force powers. He realizes that deep down in his heart he still loved and cared about his father and wanted to atone for his actions over almost bringing the galaxy into darkness after seeing the inner good in himself.
  • His death is played for sympathy, since he was shown crying over seeing his father die and hugged him before Anakin impaled him and he was visibly upset over feeling supposedly betrayed by him before unleashing his dying breath and passing away.
  • Even after his death, there's still a positive side in him as shown in Rebels when Ezra Bridger explores the Lothal temple, with him hopefully and altruistically saying that the future can change before Ezra closes the portal in the World Between Worlds and destroys the temple, and his mural depicted him as saddened before it sank. Thus, it is safe to assume that he redeemed himself and fully gave up his dark desires in the afterlife considering the Mortis Gods murals all display sentience.

Trivia[]

  • Sam Witwer also voiced Darth Maul within the same franchise. Likewise, Maul is also a villainous benchmark.
