Smokey is a recurring antagonist of the anthology post apocalyptic horror comic series Crossed: Badlands, serving as the main antagonist of the Quisling arc and the first half of the finale arc before becoming the protagonist of the second half and issue 100.
He is a intelligent, strong and imposing member of the Crossed, revealed to be a Super-Crossed, a Crossed who have a lot more resilience, can be more held back in their bloodlust and even more intelligent and human like. While originally wishing to create as much death and destruction as possible, his motives change in wanting to make a fully functioning society of Crossed.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
Quisling[]
- He lead a group of Crossed in which he mass kills and infects people while torturing them for sadistic pleasure.
- He is shown to kill his fellow Crossed members if they annoy him.
- He murders Oliverās lover and enforces Oliver to sell out all his friends to the crossed, and even enforces Oliver to rape one of the female members out of pure sadism.
- Goes on a mass murder spree with his crossed members, killing over 200 people in which he uses Oliver to lead them out to kill them.
- Wished to gain access to nuclear weapons to cause mass destruction onto the city and world, although he abandons the plan.
- He breaches a military base and kills all the soldiers in it.
- When Oliver infects himself so Smokey canāt use him, he kills the infected Oliver and murders all his Crossed members in a rage.
Final Arc[]
- When discovering Codyās underground bunker, destroying the oxygen system to fish them out and kills most of them, only sparing Cody out of pragmatism.
- Like Oliver, he forces Cody to bait people into getting killed by his group and kidnaps woman and have him have sex with them so he can create a human crossed society, wanting to make a full on dynasty with him in front.
- When Cody kills the doctor and infects everyone to foil his plan, Smokey murders Cody by shoving him out the window.
- He storms a large boat of sailors and murders the captain brutally while forcing the sailors to sail to Florida to meet the Twins.
- Along with The Twins, created a large functioning system of Crossed in which he also captures humans to be tortured to keep them all stable.
- Murders the sailor he was friends for 15 years, although it was out of mercy.
- While he is a Crossed, he is an intelligent member who gains a proper moral agency and can control his impulses.
Why Doesnāt He Stand Out?[]
- Despite passing the baseline, he still fails the massive heinous standard of Crossed, due to the work having serial killers, rapists, pedophiles, torturers, and cannibals as the norm, making it almost impossible for anyone to pass it (excluding Beauregard Salt).
- He is an extremist and has a few sympathetic moments, wanting to believe he was not like the other Crossed and prove that the Crossed can be just as much as a functioning society.
- He shows to genuinely love his children, being horrified when The Twins enforced him to revert to his Crossed instincts and even then, couldnāt kill him, and he still felt love for him after 15 years.
- Heās shown to have a genuine friendship and care for the young Sailor (after some time), keeping him uninfected and protected for 15 years and grow genuinely close to him as a friendship, even granting him several privileges like weapon access. Sometimes they just sit back together and hang out/talk over some beers, which is pretty much entirely unheard of for the crossed. Although he later kills him, it was revealed shorter after to be an act of mercy to not get tortured by the twins, who were trailing close behind and expressed a desire to make the Sailor die an exceedingly painful death several times prior. Heās also shown to be genuinely saddened by the manās death, and took the extra time and effort to make his last moments happy, believing that he would be free to go live with other humans, before killing him quickly and painlessly without him ever noticing.
- All of his on-screen heinous acts were committed while he was already influenced by the Crossed virus, which despite his comparative intelligence still gives him some potential moral agency issues. The twins from the same storyline, for example, despite being as intelligent as Smokey, were shown to be average survivors before their infection, before quickly becoming murder and torture obsessed monsters after getting infected.
Trivia[]
- Smokey, along with Joe Pratt and Harold Lorre, are unusual examples of a Villainous Benchmark, as most Villainous Benchmarks are not that heinous and have numerous mitigating factors (although Smokey does have a high amount by Crossed standards). While Smokey easily passes the general standards, because of the astronomical in-story standards, he fails to stand out, like nearly all other characters.
