ā | Revenge, you?! Ha! I am Smaug! I kill whoever I wish! I am strong, strong, strong! My armor is like tenfold shields, my teeth are like swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail... a thunderbolt! My wings... a hurricane! And my breath... death. | ā |
~ The 1977 movie's adaptation of Smaug's most famous speech. |
Smaug is the main antagonist of The Hobbit and its many adaptations. He is a dragon who stole treasure from the dwarves, desires to keep it at all costs, and is the last of his kind.
He is voiced by the late Richard Boone in the 1977 animated film.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He destroyed Dale.
- He stole treasure from the dwarves, took over Erebor, and ruled there for centuries.
- He attempted to kill Bilbo.
- He has murdered hundreds to thousands of innocent people with no remorse for their deaths.
- He destroyed Laketown and attempted to wipe out the villagers out of spite.
- He was planning to work with Sauron.
- While he has a few comedic moments, they do not detract from his heinousness.
- He overall has no redeeming qualities.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- While he passes the baseline for defiling an entire town, he doesn't have enough villainous deeds to stand out within the franchise due to how high the heinous standard is. Furthermore, he actually has extremely high resources because he was next to Middle-earth's most colossal material fortune for decades, meaning he is massively holding back with his resources when he could pay out the most expensive mercenaries or purchase and/or build the most costly superweapons imaginable but just stays cooped up in Erebor and doesn't incinerate anyone for the aforementioned decades.
- He suffers from Fridge Horror because it's not confirmed he wants to help Sauron turn the war in Mordor's favor and burn thousands of people, with only vague hints dropped at the possibility.
