Shalnark is a major antagonist in the Hunter x Hunter anime/manga franchise. He was a member of the Phantom Troupe criminal group who possessed mind-controlling abilities.
In the 1999 anime, he was voiced by Yasuhiro Takato in Japanese and by Jordan Schartner in English, while in the 2011 anime, he was voiced by Noriko Hidaka in Japanese and by Griffin Burns (who also voices Vinegar Doppio) in English.

His Villainous Deeds[]
- In general, he has an unnerving smile when committing most of his atrocities and doesn't seem disturbed during horrific mass murders and other events. He has committed numerous thefts as a member of the Troupe.
- Took part in the massacre of the Kurta clan and forgot about it fairly quickly, leaving Kurapika as the sole survivor and spending his life seeking revenge against the troupe.
- Alongside other member of the troupe, he partook in a massacre at the Mafia Auction, killing many mobsters.
- While trying to rescue Uvogin, him and his friends killed the remaining Shadow Beasts, then used a disguise to rescue him.
- Using his Hunter License, he allowed Uvogin to find Kurapika's location so he could kill him.
- Although his death was horrible, being tortured by Hisoka, mutilated and turned into a bird scarecrow eaten by crows, this does not make him into a scapegoat, because he deserves it for all the people he brutally murdered.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- He fails the high heinous standards of the series as most of his crimes are shared with other Phantom Troupe members, and his worst crime of genocide against the Kurta clan is shared with them and done under Chrollo's orders.
- His worst crime (that's unique to him from the other Phantom Troupe members) of mass brainwashing is done worse by Illumi Zoldyck and Zazan who give their victims Fates Worse Than Death.
- He is genuinely tragic as he grew up in Meteor City, which not only was a place that trash was dumpy and people were abandoned but also was subject to child kidnappings by the mafia. He was close friends with Chrollo and the other children and experienced a traumatizing event of watching their friend, Sarasa die a horrific death.
- He cares greatly for his Phantom Troupe friends, most notably Uvogin who's death he is extremely saddened by.
- He also cares about his hometown of Meteor City, by extension, as him and the other members mainly use stolen money to help their city. He would then help save his city from being subjected to mass murder by the Chimera Ant Zazan and her army.
- He is genuinely affable to not just his friends, but even his enemies in general, such as his interaction with Pell and Boki.
