Player 278 is a supporting antagonist of the first season of Netflix's K-drama Squid Game.
He was portrayed by Kwak Ja-hyoung.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- Along with the other members of Deok-su's gang, he got in the line again to eat more food during lunch time, stealing the lunch of other players that were left with no food.
- Upon realizing that the masked men do not punish players for killing others, he assisted Jang Deok-su in the massacre of 27 players during the night after the 2nd game.
- After the massacre is interrupted by the masked men, he is frustrated as he wanted to continue and because it was the staff that had set up for players killing each other.
- He attempted to encourage Deok-su to start another riot, asking which team should they attack next, and only relented because Deok-su refuses to start another riot due to Gi-hun telling him that he cannot trust his minions (which ironically turned out to be true in his case).
- Despite later questioning the truth, when Mi-nyeo warned him that Deok-su was conspiring with Byeong-gi (who was dead at this point) and was going to betray him, 278 ignored her and sided with Deok-su. When she insisted, 278 yelled at Mi-nyeo and violently grabbed her, pulling her off Deok-su and throwing her to the ground.
- Unlike with Player 040 and Player 303, there is no indication that he cares for his other teammates as no real friendship or care is shown between them, he only seems to be working together with them to kill all the other players to remain alive and win the money.
- During the Marbles game, he displayed no hesitation in playing against Deok-su, even mocking the latter with insults as well as revealing that he was never really loyal to him. Although Deok-su himself also never cared for Player 278 so this is relatively minor.
- He also sadistically taunted him over his fear of losing and showed no concern when he did in the first round, despite knowing very well that he would've died as a result.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- Although participating in the riot to kill as many people as possible and suggesting another one to kill even more people allows him to pass the baseline, he fails the heinous standards too much, as he is just a member of Deok-su's team who does nothing to stand out from the other members.
- His death scene is played for laughs as he pathetically runs away from a masked soldier after losing to Deok-su like a coward only to be shot with a machine gun by another, calling everyone a "bastard" (in the English dub, he hypocritically screams, "You're all a--holes!" in just as much comedic fashion), jerking wildly as he's shot.
- He showed standards and remorse for the deaths in the Tug-of-War.
