Villainous Benchmark Wiki

I'm gonna make this right, Gracie. Every... meta... will die.
~ Dwyer vowing to avenge his niece by killing every meta-human, and his most famous quote.
Cicada: She's all I think about, Flash. And I'm making the world safe for her. Every meta-human must go.
The Flash: Then what about you? You're a meta-human now.
Cicada: I am, and after you're gone, I'll join you.
~ Orlin Dwyer and the Flash on the former's vendetta
Save my Grace.
~ Dwyer's last words to the Flash before his death at the hands of Future Grace.

Orlin Dwyer is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Grace Gibbons) of season 5 of the Flash TV series.

He is the first bearer of the Cicada mantle and an dark matter-enhanced serial killer who targets meta-humans in order to honor and avenge his family, specifically his niece Grace. He also wields a lightning-bolt-shaped dagger that nullifies their powers among other capabilities.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

  • After his niece Grace Gibbons was severely injured in the Enlightenment and put into a coma, Dwyer blamed all Metahumans for it despite being it being the work of Clifford DeVoe’s attack on the city and vowed to wipe them all out. His xenophobia would eventually radicalize his niece, who was able to hear his conversations with Dr. Vanessa Ambres, causing her to become the second Cicada and making Dwyer responsible for her atrocities.
  • He attacked the police escort transporting William Lang, injuring several of them and killing Lang by stabbing him in the chest with his lightning dagger.
  • After the Flash and XS defeated Vanessa Jansen, Dwyer killed Jansen with his dagger and proceeded to battle Team Flash, nearly killing Flash until he decided to spare him upon realizing he was a father.
  • He infiltrated Joe West’s home and holds him captive, attempting to get him to call Vibe there so he could kill him. When Joe refused to do this, Dwyer tortured him with his dagger’s lightning.
  • He fought against Vibe and severely injured his hands with his dagger, leaving Cisco unable to use his powers until his injuries healed.
  • When Vibe threw a reactor at him, Dwyer throws it back at him with his dagger, causing an explosion that seemingly killed Vibe.
  • Upon noticing Raelene Sharp in Jitters Cafe, Dwyer follows her and kills her.
  • He nearly killed the Flash with his dagger, only being stopped due to Killer Frost blasting him, who was immune to the dagger’s effects.
  • He began targeting Metahumans with criminal pasts, even though some of these individuals had served time for their crimes and had been released from prison. It was confirmed that he had killed at least 3 metas before Team Flash stopped him.
  • He fought against Nora and viciously breaks her spine, paralyzing her for a time. This left Barry enraged and drove him to nearly kill Cicada until the fully-healed Nora convinced him not to.
  • He nearly killed Matthew Norvock with his dagger after Killer Frost dodged the blow.
  • He tried to kill Iris West after the latter infiltrates his home.
  • He kidnapped Iris as revenge, taunting her that he would beat Team Flash. When Nora arrived, Dwyer threw his dagger and kills Frost. Although Nora managed to rewind time and prevent this from happening, Dwyer would end up killing at least one member of Team Flash every single time until they finally managed to outsmart him.
  • When Flash offered him a chance to be cured of his powers, Dwyer coldly refuses and attacks him. Dwyer later agrees to take the cure after realizing Grace was a metahuman too. Even then, Dwyer refuses to cooperate unless Dr. Ambres was present to administer the cure and threatens to kill all of Team Flash if anything went wrong.
  • Even after his death, Dwyer would keep appearing as a hallucination to Grace, instructing her to travel back to the time of the Particle Accelerator Explosion so she could wipe out all Metahumans.
  • He’s indirectly responsible for Nora being erased from existence and the Anti-Monitor Crisis being moved up, as Team Flash were forced to destroy his dagger to defeat Grace, who never would’ve become a villain in the first place if it weren’t for Dwyer’s crusade against Metahumans.

Why He Doesn’t Stand Out?[]

  • While he passes the baseline through his murders and personal villainy with Team Flash, he fails the Heinous Standards of the Arrowverse, especially to his niece Grace Gibbons, who went way further with her hatred of Metahumans. While he was responsible for making Grace the way she is, this was unintentional as he never meant for it to happen.
  • He is tragic; he was once a loving parent to his niece Grace, until she was put in a coma in the aftermath of the Thinker’s attack on Central City, causing him to declare hatred against Metahumans and vowing to wipe them all out in revenge.
  • He genuinely loved his niece Grace despite initially having a strained relationship with her, eventually coming to love her as his own daughter and only wants to wipe out Metahumans to get revenge for what happened to her.
  • He’s an extremist as he genuinely thinks wiping out Metahumans would benefit the rest of the world since their actions hurt innocent people.
  • He’s honorable as he spares the Flash despite having him at his mercy upon realizing he was a father. He also chooses not to harm innocent bystanders in his crusade.
  • He redeems himself by taking the Metahuman cure, later realizing how wrong his actions were, attempting to convince the adult Grace not to go down the same dark path he did, resulting in Grace killing him. Furthermore, his death is played for sympathy, as he dies in Barry’s arms and begs him to save Grace. His influence ultimately helps Nora convince the young Grace to take the metahuman cure and erase her future self from existence.
