“ | War is where the young and stupid are tricked by the old and bitter into killing each other. | „ |
~ Niko Bellic. |
“ | Life is complicated. I killed people. Smuggled people. Sold people. Perhaps here... things will be different. | „ |
~ Niko Bellic in Grand Theft Auto IV's first trailer, and his most famous quote. |
“ | There is no such thing as a new beginning, Roman. With every day we live, we pick up new baggage, baggage we must carry with us for the rest of our lives. There's no dropping it and pretending we are fresh and clean, just because we get off a boat in a new place. | „ |
~ Niko Bellic. |
Niko Bellic is the main protagonist of the 2008 video game Grand Theft Auto IV. He is a previous war criminal, who had his unit betrayed by an unknown man who fled the scene after getting most of the unit killed. Ever since then, Niko has searched for the traitor for over a decade, and finally pinpoints his general location, Liberty City.
He was voiced and motion-captured by Michael Hollick.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- It's implied that he was a human trafficker, has criminal connections and killed numerous of people including 50 children in Europe.
- He mocked his victims while he was killing them although some of them deserved it.
- He killed several people in cold blood for money as he was hired to do it.
- He threatened to kill Dimitri in a very brutal way out of his anger in a phone call that he ordered his men to kidnap and torture Roman.
- While he did it to save Roman, he killed all of his men out of rage.
- He served as an accomplice in Jeff Harlingford's murder against his wife by dumping her corpse into the ocean.
- He robbed a bank, stole their money and killed dozens of people with his crew.
- He can be a jerk to Brucie, such as twisting his arm after he challenged him even though Brucie only did it as a joke.
- He kidnapped Gracie Ancelotti and knocked her out. Later on, he slapped her while she was tied up and helped with using her as ransom.
- He pretended to be a doctor to be able to enter into the hospital, unplugged Anthony's life support and killed several people there.
- If choosing to kill Darko, he brutally and repeatedly shot Darko with 11 ammos with no consideration for Darko's pain. To be fair, Darko deserved it for betraying his friends, causing their deaths and indirectly causing Niko to get PTSD.
- He shot Dimitri's men and Dimitri himself in the eye, although Dimitri and his men deserved it for killing Roman (Deal ending only).
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- As an On & Off character, he has lots of heroic traits and actions.
- While he passes the general standards, he severely fails the in-story standards to villains like Trevor Philips, Eddie Low, Ray Bulgarin and Dimitri Rascalov himself, all of whom did worse than him with Trevor, Ray and Dimitri having the exact same resources and Eddie having even less resources than him.
- While the act of chopping the hands off of 50 children could make him stand out, not only was it entirely off-screen, it is also never fully specified whether Niko even did it or it was something he saw someone else do, such as a fellow soldier or something.
- His human trafficking crimes are entirely offscreen as well, making him fail even harder than he already did.
- While you could argue he has a higher kill count than his competition, all his on-screen crimes, such as mass murder, have already been done in every GTA game thus far.
- It also doesn't help that almost all of Niko's on-screen victims deserved it, therefore severely downplaying his kill count, especially on-screen.
- He's WAY too tragic, as he was a war soldier at a young age who lost all of his friends in his country, grew up with a really difficult life, was raised by an alcoholic father who would routinely beat him, lived off-grid, had to face the fact Roman's mother was raped and murdered, and didn't have access to electricity until he was 12. These harsh upbringings have given him PTSD, anger issues, and immense difficulty with moving on from the past.
- Some of his heinous actions that he did were to save Roman and his allies.
- He is genuinely affable and friendly as he is capable of forming friendships, helping out those in need, and has a good sense of humor despite his cynical and wrathful personality.
- He's redeemed as he has retired from the criminal life, lives as a normal person and has a new career in the end of GTA 4's storyline.
