Nightmare Moon is a major antagonist in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
She is the corrupted form of Princess Luna, a younger sister of Princess Celestia who was consumed by her own jealousy towards her sister. After she was banished to the moon a thousand years ago, she then returned years later and was defeated and reformed by the Mane Six using the Elements of Harmony. She is a former archenemy of Princess Celestia.
Like her original form, she was voiced by Tabitha St. Germain.

- Due to being jealous over her older sister being praised instead of her, Luna consumed her bitterness and jealousy inside her and transformed into Nightmare Moon, betraying Celestia and tried to destroy her. However, she was banished to the moon for a thousand years for her actions towards Celestia.
- After she was released during the Summer Sun Celebration, she is presented to be very threatening towards everypony else and then attacked the royal guards by releasing thunder bolts at them before she escaped.
- Learning that Twilight and her soon-to-be friends decided to look for the Elements of Harmony in the Everfree Forest, she created an obstacles for them to make it hard to get the Elements.
- Triggering a landslide by shattering the cliff where they are standing to get them fall into their deaths, luckily they were safe from the fall.
- Transformed into a thorn to stab the manticore in its paw in order to make it attack them, but only Fluttershy noticed the thorn and then pulling it out, earning its trust.
- Making a monstrous faces appeared on the tree around them to scare them, possibly making them give up on their quest and have them leave the Everfree Forest. However, Pinkie taught them to face their fears which those scary faces were disappeared on the trees.
- Cutting off Steven Magnet's right side of his moustache to prevent them from crossing the river, but Rarity then cut off her tail to repair his mustache, allowing them to cross.
- Disguised as the Shadowbolts to convince Rainbow Dash into joining them in order to prevent her friends from crossing the bridge, but she rejects the offer and went to help them instead.
- With no other choice, she decided to face Twilight by herself. When Twilight tried to use the orb to spark the elements, Nightmare Moon then stomped on the ground with her hoof to shattering the orbs, rendering her powerless. She then arrogantly boasted at Twilight that she will never defeat her or see Celestia ever again. This proved to be her defeat and reformation after they used the Elements of Harmony to defeat her.
Why She Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- While her attempted sororicide allows her to pass the baseline since attempting to kill any relative being an unique crime, most of her crimes amount to trying to take over the world and trying to kill the heroes, making her fail to stand out in comparison to Queen Chrysalis, King Sombra, Storm King and even Sunset Shimmer herself, all of whom have done much worse while wielding significantly less power than that amassed by Nightmare Moon.
- Has a tragic backstory where her older sister Celestia was praised during the day, but Luna was "shunned" and "ignored" during the night. Her bitterness and jealousy are what made her transformed into Nightmare Moon in the first place until she was banished to the moon by Celestia.
- Has a moral agency issue as she was presumably corrupted by her jealousy and bitterness that turned herself into a Nightmare Moon. However, after her defeat, she was later reformed and reverted back to her original self.
- In the alternative timeline created by Starlight Glimmer it's revealed to be affable towards Twilight and Spike despite distrusting them.
- After she was defeated by the Mane Six, she was very regretful over her actions and make amends with her older sister Princess Celestia. Throughout the series, she became one of the supporting protagonists of the show.
