~ Mimic the Octopus after seemingly killing Whisper. |
Mimic the Octopus is a major antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog IDW comics serving as the main antagonist of the Tangle & Whisper Mini Series and the tritagonist of the Bad Guys Mini Series. He was originally a member of The Diamond Cutters, but ended up betraying them to Dr. Eggman which made him the arch-nemesis of Whisper the Wolf, the last surviving member of the original Diamond Cutters.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
In General/Past[]
- Even before he joined the original Diamond Cutters, he worked with various teams during the war, but abandoned and left them to die whenever his life was in danger, meaning that he has always done this.
- Although the 2024 annual reveals that he is insecure and has an empty void inside of him, it isn't played for sympathy as he assumes everyone has one.
- Plus, it could just be a manipulation tactic he uses to put everyone off guard and take advantage of them.
- He sold out the original Diamond Cutters to Dr. Eggman (which led to their deaths at the hands of the Shadow Androids), to save his own skin and be pardoned for his crimes against the latter.
- This action makes him the most personal enemy of Whisper the Wolf, the only surviving member of the Diamond Cutters, and would also cause her to become closed off and have problems with trusting others for a long time until she met Tangle.
- While it’s implied that Mimic might deep down feel some remorse for killing the Diamond Cutters, it’s not a redeeming quality as he refuses to acknowledge the feeling and instead seeks to get rid of it by killing Whisper.
- Although he has some comedic moments, such as getting annoyed at Rough and Tumble's antics, they don't detract from his villainy as he is still taken completely seriously in-universe.
- While he did team up with Dr. Starline, Rough, Tumble and Zavok in "Bad Guys" mini series, it was out of pragmatic reasons as he only did so to erase any information Eggman had on him from his database.
- While he did initially work with Zavok to betray Starline for trying to betray them and showed some respect towards him, he would later betray Zavok and the rest of his team by sending the camera footage to Eggman that Zavok was attacking his base in hopes that Eggman would wipe them all out so no one would be able to tell him that he was involved, proving he didn't care about any of them and that his respect towards Zavok mutually wasn't genuine.
- He overall lacks any redeeming qualities, his true allegiance being to himself and whichever side can benefit him most.
Comics[]
- He disguised himself as Sonic and committed a few crimes to frame him, such as:
- Trying to kill Whisper after they met up.
- Vandalizing a wall with the symbol of The Eggman Empire.
- Stealing a lollipop from a baby.
- Kicking a Chao a long distance.
- He tricked Tangle the Lemur into attacking Whisper.
- He disguised himself as Whisper so he could trap Tangle in a vault and suffocate her to death, and then impersonated Tangle to try to lure Whisper into a trap and kill her.
- When Whisper asks Mimic where Tangle is, Mimic shapeshifts into Tangle and says she’s in a “safe” place, but then shapeshifts into the other Diamond Cutters and says that Whisper can’t say the same about them, blaming her for their deaths and not being able to protect them.
- He blew up the base where Tangle and Whisper were and likely would have succeeded in killing them if the two didn't hide in a vault.
- After he found out that Whisper and Tangle survived, he took some of Eggman's Badniks and went after them.
- When confronted about his betrayal of the Diamond Cutters, he admitted that he didn't see them as his friends or even his comrades and felt no remorse for his actions before trying to kill Tangle and Whisper one final time.
- He agreed to help Dr. Starline get revenge on Eggman if Starline erased all of the files Eggman had on him from his database, and broke out of prison to do so.
- He attacked one of Eggman’s bases with the other villains to steal Power Cores and shapeshifted into Sonic in front of the security cameras in an attempt to frame him for the attack.
- While Starline is asleep, Mimic impersonates him and hacks into his computer, discovering video recordings of Starline explaining how he built the Tricore for himself and will kill the other villains when they outlive their usefulness. Mimic would have killed Starline had a more pragmatic Zavok persuaded him to hold off until they got what they wanted out of him.
- Him and the other villains broke into the Eggnet Hub.
- When Starline didn’t give Mimic his reward, Mimic put his knife to Starline’s throat and revealed Starline’s plans to Rough and Tumble, after which Starline was forced to delete all of Mimic’s data from the Eggnet.
- After Starline outlived his usefulness, Mimic joined the other villains in attempting to kill him.
- When Zavok told Mimic to guard the Eggnet’s main computer, Mimic decided to update the Eggnet’s report to send Eggman to the Eggnet Hub to carpet bomb the other villains, exposing Zavok's involvement in particular, before escaping in Starline’s truck to get revenge on Whisper.
- He followed Whisper to the woods shortly before the Urban Warfare arc and was going to kill her until Sonic showed up.
- He allies himself with Clutch and infiltrated the New Diamond Cutters, disguised as a cat named Duo.
- He kicked Silver while he was carrying several boulders while they were training with the Diamond Cutters, causing Silver to drop the boulders and almost crush the other Diamond Cutters.
- When Silver was stuck inside a Giant Chopper, Mimic abandoned him and left him to die, although he falsely told the other Diamond Cutters that he was going to go back for him.
- When Silver picked him up with his telekinesis and tried to get a confession out of him, Mimic jumped onto the floor and faked an injury to make it look like Silver attacked him and get him kicked out of the Diamond Cutters, bringing him one step closer to his goals and gaslighting Whisper into thinking she was wrong.
- He had Clutch's workers sabotage Sonic, Tails, and Amy's Extreme Gears so they would be disqualified from the Clean Sweepstakes and wouldn't find out about Clutch's plans.
- He agrees to quietly unmask the Phantom Rider for Clutch so they’ll know who they’re dealing with.
- He impersonates the Phantom Rider during a dodgeball event in the Clean Sweepstakes and attacks people with dodgeballs to frame him.
- He impersonates Surge and threatens to kill Tangle and Whisper to trick Whisper into attacking Surge.
- He unmasks the Phantom Rider and reveals him to be Sonic to Tangle, Whisper, Surge, Kit, and the Babylon Rogues before escaping and giving the news to Clutch.
- While he’s disturbed by Clutch’s breakdown he has once he learns the Phantom Rider is Sonic, it’s simply out of cowardice and not out of actual standards.
- After Clutch gets exposed for his criminal activity and suffers a breakdown, Mimic immediately thinks to ditch him before he is stopped by Kit, by bringing him to the Diamond Cutters. This shows that Mimic isn’t loyal to Clutch in any way as he’s ready to abandon him at a drop of a hat.
- He tells Lanolin that Tangle and Whisper knew that Sonic wasn’t the Phantom Rider and didn’t tell her so that he could cause conflict between them and get away.
- He was completely fine with fleeing when the Restoration Shuttle was falling to save himself without caring about the thousands of lives that were in danger, only going to the Restoration Shuttle with everyone else after being threatened into doing so by Surge and Kit. This proves Mimic doesn’t care about the lives of anyone besides himself.
- After Clutch unwittingly exposes him by calling for backup on his walkie-talkie and addressing him by his real name in front of the Diamond Cutters, Mimic flees as Tangle and Whisper chase him and throws his walkie-talkie at Whisper, attacking them with a Wispon before eventually escaping into the crowd.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- Despite his very low resources, lack of redeeming qualities, and personal villainy towards Whisper, Mimic still massively fails the very high heinous standard of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise since his worst confirmed crimes are 3 murders and 7 attempted murders. His resources don’t help since he only wants to kill the Diamond Cutters, not being involved in Clutch’s attempted destruction of Central City.
- Not to mention that trying to destroy the world is common in the franchise so he doesn't get an advantage regardless of resources.
Trivia[]
- Considering that the IDW Comics are still ongoing, Mimic could become more heinous in the future, especially since he is still at large after the Phantom Riders arc.
- Since Mimic abandoned several other teams during the war besides just the Diamond Cutters, it’s possible that he has killed more than just 3 people. If confirmed, this could be enough to make him Pure Evil.
