| ~ Kotaro's twisted belief about heroes. |
Kotaro Shimura is a posthumous antagonist in the anime/manga franchise My Hero Academia. He was the son of Pro Hero Nana Shimura and the abusive father of Tenko Shimura (who would later become Tomura Shigaraki.)
He is voiced by Yuya Tajima in the Japanese version in the anime and Aaron Campbell in the English dub.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He constantly abused his family and forcing them to share his hatred towards superhero, mainly Tenko, who he would drag away and lock outside of the house (when he caught him wanting to be a hero) until he "realized" his wrong with the rest of the family being forced to watch and too afraid to stop him.
- He slapped Tenko for going into his study and looking at pictures of his grandmother after intimidating his daughter into revealing the truth.
- He hit Tenko in the head with a garden tool and proceeded to try to attack him again instead of comforting him after he killed the family, unlike the rest of the family who had less hostile reactions.
- While he may have cared for his mother when he was a child, as an adult he subverts this as he’s shown being nothing more than angered towards her.
- His actions would traumatize and directly lead to Tenko becoming the supervillain now known as Tomura Shigaraki who wishes to destroy everything.
- While he hates heroes for hurting others, it is hypocritical as he hurts his own family.
- Unlike the other members of the Shimura family, whose deaths were played for sympathy, Kotaro's death, while brutal, was played for pure satisfaction. Furthermore, he was the only one of his family who Tenko was not remorseful for killing, not to mention his death was the only one that was intentional.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- While he passes the baseline for abusing and mentally traumatizing his son into his breaking point, My Hero Academia's heinous standard is too high to go any higher even with his lower resources regardless since mass murdering villains causing terror is the norm around here. While he did turn his son into Tomura Shigaraki, it was unintentionally heinous due to the fact that his abuse was ultimately influenced by All For One which makes him a pawn in his schemes and diminishes his heinousness in the grand scheme of things.
- While child abuse could be unique on paper, Endeavor also did this crime too making it not that case here.
- While not an excuse for his actions, he is tragic as he was once a happy child until he had his father killed by a villain and was abandoned by his mother who left him in foster care, without knowing the reason for it as she would refuse to keep in touch with him. He would then have to work hard to build up his life and begin a family with likely little to no support. His feeling of abandonment would cause his warped hatred of superheroes (in a similar manner to how his son would become later on) while All For One, the very man who killed his mother and ruined his life, would pretend to be his friend and influence him to become worse. His feeling of abandonment is portrayed sympathetically and affects him in the present, as he is shown to be saddened while looking over old family pictures.
- Despite being abusive to them, he cares for his children, parent-in-laws and his wife, which are stated to be his favorite things. He has even briefly shown remorse for how he treated his current family and actually considered making an effort to become a better person, which possibly would have happened had Tenko's Quirk not awakened and caused disaster.
- Furthermore, it's been established that Kotaro wasn't always abusive.
