~ Kenny trying to rationalize his crimes.

Kenny is the main protagonist of “Shut Up and Dance”, episode 3 of the third season of Black Mirror.

He is a 19-year-old who is blackmailed by an anonymous group of cybercriminals, forcing him into a shaky alliance with another blackmail victim, Hector. The two set out on a disturbing and bizarre trek across suburbia, carrying out their tormentors’ demands in order to keep their darkest secrets from getting exposed.

He was portrayed by Alex Lawther.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

  • He's literally a pedophile. The episode's whole twist ending is that Kenny isn't just some innocent schmuck who got caught masturbating from his webcam, which even Hector points out is totally normal and everyone does it; Kenny was watching child porn.
    • Judging from an earlier scene at his workplace where Kenny gives a little girl a toy, plus him fondling crayons that a kid drew with, it's possible that the minors Kenny got aroused by were in their single digits, and that he also poses a very direct risk to children. Kenny himself is 19, making him way more disturbed in hindsight.
  • In an attempt to keep his pedophilia secret, instead of just turning himself in to the police, he robs a bank with a gun (which he doesn't even know yet is empty) and then kills a much older man—who was also a pedophile—in a fight.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • Even disregarding the insane heinous standards for Black Mirror, Kenny—as far as the audience knows—never actually molested a child, nor did he have anything to do with making the CP on his computer. So while Kenny is still a disgusting, mentally ill person, his crimes by themselves simply do not pass the baseline.
    • It's also worth noting that the hackers downloaded Kenny's CP and then spread it to his contacts, making them guilty of distributing CP as well as possession. At least Kenny never distributed, making them arguably worse in that regard.
  • For that same reason, he qualifies as a scapegoat. The hackers forced Kenny (and others whose "crimes" were much lesser than his) to commit more crimes that effect unrelated people, such as speeding under the influence, armed bank robbery, and even murder. All crimes that Kenny otherwise never wanted to do (he literally pees himself during the bank robbery); he only did so for the sake of privacy, only for the hackers to reveal him and the others' secrets anyway out of pure sadism.
  • It's implied that he hates himself for his pedophilia deep down, attempting suicide with a gun at one point, only for the gun to be empty without Kenny's knowledge.
