“ | What the Ancient One hoards, Dormammu gives freely. Life, everlasting. He's not the Destroyer of Worlds, Doctor, he's the Savior of Worlds. | „ |
~ Kaecilius to Doctor Strange. |
Kaecilius is the main antagonist of Doctor Strange. He is the founder and leader of the Zealots, a group misguidedly dedicated to the evil Dormammu.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He seeks to bring the obviously malevolent cosmic monster Dormammu to Earth and turns several of his fellow mystics against the Ancient One, inspiring a vicious mutiny.
- He decapitates a librarian and drops his head in a bucket, resulting in Wong succeeding him.
- He kills one of his own followers for being nervous about the forthcoming ritual.
- He attacks the London Sanctum and murders Sol Rama in cold blood.
- He attacks the New York Sanctum and murders Daniel Drumm next. He proceeds to try to kill Doctor Strange, only to be distracted by the Cloak of Levitation and bound by the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak.
- When Doctor Strange asks if he cares for the people he killed, he callously claims they are little specks in a universe that simply doesn't care about them.
- He murders the Ancient One in cold blood, marking the second time they have to promote Wong because of Kaecilius' murderous deeds.
- Even though he got a Zealot out of a desert portal, it's only pragmatism. He's already established that the Zealots are just pawns to him, as he let several of them die in the prologue to save himself, he killed one himself, and he stabbed another to get a hit on his hated ex-mentor.
- He destroys the Hong Kong Sanctum and kills Wong and all of his friends (although their deaths get reversed by the Time Stone).
- He is played dead seriously, is genuinely feared by his enemies, and is never given any comedic moments at all.
- He is responsible for Karl Mordo's descent into villainy, as he ends up ruining Jonathan Pangborn's life and trying to murder Doctor Strange just because he didn't like the latter's means of stopping Kaecilius' reign of terror.
- He is quintessentially delusional, as not only does he think time is degrading and death is the opposite of a natural part of life, but he simply cannot understand why nature must be occasionally bent to protect the innocent instead of frequently bent to endlessly create new lifeforms. The Ancient One kept warning him that he was hugely misconceiving the Multiverse and he kept ignoring her, so as Doctor Strange indeed points out, Kaecilius' own delusions don't justify anything he is guilty of. If he had been victorious, then Earth would fall into a torturous and everlasting darkness it may never, ever submerge from successfully.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- While his crimes do pass the general baseline, he relies on fridge horror since it is doubtful he has any idea that people will be tortured and nothing really indicates Kaecilius was aware of Dormammu's plans, causing him to fail the in-series heinous standards.
- He has a genuine tragedy as he lost his family which is why he hates time and death so much, and as Dormammu made him think what he is doing for him is for the greater good and that his eternal life is paradise. He only turned on the Ancient One because his family was never coming back.
- While his methods aren’t excusable, he’s not intentionally evil, being a clear-cut extremist who genuinely believes Dormammu will free the world from the oppression of time and death.
- He is polite to a degree, sincerely acknowledging he shouldn't judge someone for allegedly going by "Mr. Doctor".
- He is genuinely and truly loyal to Dormammu, even saying that he is beautiful upon finally seeing him in the flesh and reverently commending him for running a world beyond time and death.
- He is a scapegoat since he became a damned soul by Dormammu in spite of doing nothing to warrant it besides merely being an extension of his plans, especially because this prevents him from being reunited from his beloved family.
Trivia[]
- He was originally proposed as Inconsistently Heinous for unsleashing Dormammu, but he was rejected when it was brought up that he doesn’t really know the scope of his actions.
