No one sees true night. What's really there in the dark....It's not that they can't see, they simply don't. They feel an elemental force that scares them into the deepest reaches of their minds, but they refuse to see the actual source. Something watching them, just out of their reach, something cold and frightening, something inhuman.
~ Jonny's opening monologue.

Jonathan "Jonny" McHale, also known as True Night, is the villainous protagonist in the crime-drama TV series Criminal Minds. He is a psychotic vigilante who appears in the season three episode "True Night".

He is portrayed by Frankie Muniz. In-costume scenes as True Night were portrayed by James Lew.

His Villainous Deeds[]

  • Believing he was the "True Night" he brutally killed 5 23rd TSK members and killed 2 more in the episode.
  • He was a massive jerk to Bobby Kim and eventually fired him out of sadness
  • Gaining a psychotic episode from the flashes of fans' cameras, he runs into several people and tries to choke Jasper to death in a fit of rage.
  • Attacked Glenn Hill's suburban home by killing 2 gang members outside of the home, 4 people in it, and finally, kidnapping and torturing Glen to death with disembowelment and decapitation.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • All of his murders are asshole victims who are known for killing people in brutal ways and 6 of them participated in the rape, torture, and murder of his girlfriend, Vicky.
  • His love for his girlfriend is one the biggest relationships in the series and all of his crimes stem from her death
  • He is very tragic as once a normal man, he as attacked by a sadistic group of gangsters who gang raped his girlfriend Vicky, murdered her, and severely sliced Johnny's stomach to kill him.
  • He is a vigilante who only killed people who deserved it, and he felt remorse for choking Jasper in a psychotic rage.
  • He is genuinely affable as shown in the conversation with his neighbor, Helen Trestle.
  • He had heavy moral agency as he was institutionalized for thinking that Vicky was alive, and she simply didn't answer his calls.
  • In the end, he shows some remorse for his murders as he breaks down realizing he killed Glen Hill and dozens of TSK members.
