Long John Silver (also referred to as the Cyborg by Billy Bones or also simply known as John Silver) is the main antagonist of Disney's 43rd full-length animated feature film Treasure Planet, which is loosely based on the 1883 Scottish adventure book Treasure Island by the late Robert Louis Stevenson.

He was based on the character of the same name from the book. He is a cybernetic bear-like alien pirate captain who spends most of his life finding Treasure Planet and achieving wealth. Silver is two-sided. On one side, he is greedy and ruthless, seeking to dispose of anyone who gets in his way in getting the treasure. On the other, he has a soft side to Jim Hawkins and forms an unanticipated father-son like bond with him. It was thanks to Jim that Silver begins to slowly redeem himself.

He was voiced by the late Brian Murray.

He acted as a pirate, possibly for years.
He burns the Inn, which belongs to Jim's mother.
He leads the mutiny, which leads to Captain Amelia's injury.
He kidnaps Captain Amelia and Dr. Doppler.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

He fails the baseline as his worst crime was threatening to shoot at Captain Amelia and Dr. Doppler, which remains a mere threat with nothing else he does being especially heinous at all. By extension, he avoids unnecessary cruelty. That means he fails the heinous standards to Scroop, who killed Mr. Arrow by cutting his lifeline in two so he'd fall into a black hole while having limited resources. While he did step on a trap that resulted in an explosion that got a bit of his crew killed, he didn't intend for it to happen that way, nor did he know there was a trap.
He was noticeably worried about what would happen to Jim when Scroop mentioned the latter.
Even before his redemption he has a few Pet The Dog moments.
- When he notices Jim sleeping after successfully cleaning all the dishes, he gives him his coat.
- He comforts Jim after Mr. Arrow's death.
- He genuinely encourages Captain Amelia and Delbert Doppler to listen to Jim.
He redeems himself.
He’s tragic as his lost his eye and both right limbs due to trying to achieve his dream and is a Villain by Proxy.
He is sympathetic in the scene where Jim stubbornly refuses his genuine offer.
He wants to achieve his dream and is also an Anti-Villain.
He has standards, as he viewed Mr. Arrow as a friend and even threatened Scroop for killing him.

Trivia[]

It is unknown if his version from the original novel by Robert Louis Stevenson can be qualified Villainous Benchmark as well or not.
