~ John Marston reflects on how his life of crime with Dutch Van Der Linde has changed to Arthur Morgan. |
John Marston Sr. is the main protagonist of the 2010 video game Red Dead Redemption and one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Dutch van der Linde) of its 2018 prequel, Red Dead Redemption II.
He was a former outlaw and member of the Van der Linde gang, determined to make amends for his past by tracking down and killing the other members of his gang to rescue his family, who was kidnapped by the government. He is the father of Jack Marston and the husband of Abigail Roberts.
He was portrayed by Robert Allen Wiethoff in motion capture.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- After spending many years living as an orphan, he willingly joined Dutch van der Linde's gang even though he knew that all the members of the gang were criminals.
- He was initially a neglectful boyfriend towards Abigail Roberts, as he didn't care about her feelings until a later point in their relationship.
- He neglected his son Jack so badly to the point that Jack became a pessimistic, insecure, lethal and even suicidal nihilist who chose to give up and throw his friends out of his life.
- Although many of his victims deserve to die, John is okay with killing anyone who gets in his way. Sometimes, he even targets innocent people and shows no consideration for their deaths.
- He frequently threatens Irish into sobering up to be of some use to him.
- He tells West Dickens that he won't hesitate to put a bullet in his skull if he steps out of line. In other words, John threatened to kill West Dickens out of spite.
- While in Mexico, on his search to capture Bill and Javier, he additionally supports Allende in his oppression of Mexico if it means he’ll help him get closer to finding Bill and Javier.
- He is indirectly responsible for everything that happens in Red Dead Redemption, as he constantly refused to let go of the past and move on with his life so that he could be a better person.
- Despite his wife Abigail begging him not to kill Micah Bell, John still does it anyway to avenge Arthur. This leads the B.O.I discovering his location and eventually orchestrating the downfall of the Marston Family. Because of John's actions, he got himself and Uncle killed during the Army's raid of Beecher's Hope. To make matters even worse, Jack was so consumed with vengeance for his family that he adopted the outlaw lifestyle to kill Edgar Ross, which ultimately invalidated Arthur and John's intentions to protect Jack from becoming an outlaw like them.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- Unlike Edgar Ross, he didn’t intend to cause his family to get killed as he wanted to marry Abigail after shooting Micah. Due to this, he fails the heinous standards to Arthur Morgan who beat Thomas Downes to death and bailed Micah Bell out of jail to help him shoot up half of Strawberry Town, Micah Bell who massacred most of Strawberry Town and sold the Van der Linde gang out to the Pinkertons, and Dutch van der Linde who caused the Blackwater massacre and initiated a war between the USA and Wapiti Indians. Resources don't help John as he, Arthur, Micah and Dutch are all outlaws.
- He is genuinely tragic, as his mother and father passed away when he was a child and he had to live as an orphan for a few years until he was picked up by Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews and taken into the Van der Linde gang.
- He has committed numerous heroic deeds, such as making an extremely heroic sacrifice in order to save his family and defeating Micah Bell by killing him and ending his reign of terror.
- He cares for a multitude of people, such as Abigail, Jack, Landon, Bonnie and Arthur. He also considers Arthur his best friend and the two always get along without arguing or trying to kill each other.
- He has standards against betrayal, irresponsibility, corruption, racism and sexism. Much like Arthur, John is not a racist and before killing Micah Bell, he calls him out on his corrupt nature.
- While he doesn't get on well with his family at first, he later became nicer and is more than willing to protect his son Jack. Along with his gang, John also came to Jack's rescue, which even impresses Arthur himself.
- He redeems himself after realizing that the US Army had come to kill him. As soon as he is aware of this, John sends his family out of their home and then confronts the Army, even taking out several men before being gunned down and honoring the legacy of his best friend Arthur (in fact, before facing the Army, John told Abigail and Jack a piece of advice Arthur gave him twelve years prior: to run and not look back).
