~ Joe Chill admitting his role in murdering Thomas and Martha Wayne in Prime Earth. |
Joe Chill is a minor yet pivotal antagonist in DC Comics. In both New Earth and Prime Earth continuities, he was the mugger who shot Thomas and Martha Wayne. This event would be a major catalyst for Bruce Wayne becoming Batman.
He was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
In General involving New Earth[]
- Even before his infamous encounter with the Waynes, he worked under Lew Moxon as a hitman, and later moved up the ranks as a small-time crime boss.
- At one point, he murdered one of his thugs for allegedly trying to testify to the police.
- Shoots Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne on Moxon's orders and spared Bruce partially so he could unknowing act as an alibi for Lew Moxon via telling the police his parents were killed in a robbery gone wrong rather than a contract killing. It makes him responsible for Bruce becoming Batman, and the reason why he shot Martha was him wanting her to shut up about calling the police for help.
- Cowardly hides behind his office to try to avoid Batman.
Prime Earth[]
- After the deaths of the Waynes, he allegedly became a gunman that allegedly killed forty people.
- When confronted over Batman over the death of the Waynes, Chill admitted he planned to use the valuables he stole to buy more alcohol.
- When being brainwashed by the Joker, he shot Duke Thomas's parents.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- Despite being a catalyst to creating Batman, he fails the massive heinous standards of DC. Other villains such as the the Joker, and even standard villains like the the Penguin and the Riddler attempt to do far worse with and without their resources.
- In New Earth, he shows some honor on his deathbed by politely admitting that Bruce avenged his parents after all.
- In the Prime Earth continuity, many years after the deaths of the Waynes, he tried to redeem himself by writing apology letters to Bruce Wayne, admitting his role of his murder.
- In said attempts for redemption, his illiteracy prevented him from doing so, giving him mild sympathy. However, given how he spent most of his money on alcohol beforehand, this makes for a very minor prevention.
