“ Don't let such a small obstacle block your path. „
~ Hazel Rainart.
“ You don't like me. You have no reason to like me. But you don't have to like me to get the results you want. „
~ Hazel, to Sienna Khan.
“ I'm doing what Gretchen would have done! „
~ Hazel, to Salem.

Hazel Rainart was a major antagonist in the American web series RWBY. He was an associate of Salem and part of her inner circle.

In Volume 8, after learning about Salem's true goal, he decided to defect from her inner circle to help Oscar Pine and Emerald Sustrai escape from Monstra, during which he sacrificed himself to hold her back allowing Oscar to destroy her and Monstra.

He was voiced by William Orendorff in English and by Akio Ōtsuka in Japanese.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

  • As a minion of Salem, he has assisted her in numerous evil plans.
  • He is ultimately the most personal enemy of Oscar, as he assaulted him for an insanely petty reason.
  • When he notices Oscar failing to get a train ticket from the machine, Hazel helps Oscar by slamming on the machine with his hand, causing it to malfunction and shoot out a ticket for him. While this could be regarded as an act of kindness, it still counts as assisted theft
  • He holds Ozpin responsible for killing his sister despite Oscar telling him that the Grimm killed her and she sacrificed her life.
  • He tried to manipulate Sienna Khan into joining Salem’s side even though Sienna was unwilling to do so.
  • In "The More the Merrier", Cinder reveals that Tyrian and Hazel killed all huntsmen and huntresses who befriended Qrow in ambushes with Lionheart's help, because they could become a problem for the future plans to destroy the kingdom.
    • This doesn't count as off-screen villainy as this is the reason why Qrow failed to find his old friends and prepare to face Salem's allies: Because they all were already dead by the time he started to look for them.
  • He brutally tortures Oscar by beating him up to an inch of his life with no mercy or remorse. He also tortured Oscar for information on his sister and threatened to kill Oscar if he told him that he didn't know about what happened to his sister. Although Hazel trying to avenge his sister Gretchen is justifiable, torturing Oscar isn't excusable at all.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • While he is above the baseline due to brutally torturing Oscar to near-death, he still fails the heinous standard to Arthur Watts who tried to destroy Mantle with little to no resources. While him killing Qrow’s friends and leaving Mistral unable to defend itself could make him pass the standards, it was shared with Tyrian Callows, so he fails to the latter who does even worse by killing Clover in front of Qrow and causing a massacre at a victory party with the same resources.
  • He is a genuinely tragic villain as his sister was killed by the Grimm and he was manipulated by Salem that Ozpin killed her.
  • He is affably evil, as he demonstrates this multiple times, as shown when he doesn't raise his voice or snaps at Sienna despite her rude and aggressive behavior. He is also very kind to Oscar before learning that he houses Ozpin.
  • He has standards as he was disgusted by Adam Taurus killing Sienna, and he does not find pleasure in killing others.
  • He counts as an anti-villain and extremist as despite him beating Oscar, he genuinely though he killed his sister.
  • He later redeems himself after he learns Salem's true goals.
  • His death was played for sympathy, as he sacrificed his life to stop Salem, and Oscar looks out in sadness.
