Turns out it's illegal to alter the minds of children using Cold War C.I.A. techniques; it's bureaucratic madness!
~ Mr. Robinson in "The Heart"

Mr. Gaylord Robinson is a major character in Cartoon Network's The Amazing World of Gumball franchise. He is the husband of Margaret Robinson and father of Rocky Robinson.

Robinson is an elderly puppet and the next-door neighbor of the Watterson family (the series' main characters). He is perpetually miserable, grumpy and irritable, with a particular intolerance for the antics of Gumball and Darwin, who constantly seek his approval and friendship. Meanwhile, Robinson just wants to live out his retirement days in peace.

He was voiced by Rupert Degas (season 1) and Stefan Ashton Frank (season 2 onwards).

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

In General[]

  • He is a grumpy, jerkish and misanthropic person in general, and even though he cares for them he still abuses several other characters such as Rocky, Margaret, Gumball and Darwin.

The Amazing World of Gumball[]

Season 1[]
  • In "The Debt", he was ungrateful towards Gumball for saving his life, only caring that he ruined his performance.
  • In "The Poltergeist", after having enough of the Watersons's misguided attempts to cheer him up, he got angry and insulted the Wattersons's lifestyle, tried to cause mass destruction and cut Richard's tie.
  • In "The Wand" he insulted his wife's hairdo, calling it horrible ant tried to use Wanda to change it, backfiring on him when he realizes that Wanda does not have magic.
  • In "The Car" after the Wattersons accidentally destroy his car, he, along with Margaret, destroyed the Watterson's car and later he attacked Donut Cop after he tazed Margaret due to trying to attack him, resulting in him and Margaret getting arrested.
Season 2[]
  • In "The Tag" he engaged into a fistfight with Richard, resulting in both of them of them getting under house arrest for six weeks and after that he constantly pulled harmful pranks on Richard, such as hurting him with a pole with a bee on its end (although Richard also pulled pranks on him).
    • Although he started to reconcile with Richard, while they were trapped in a trash can by Gumball and Darwin, as soon as Donut Cop found out that they were outside of their house while under house arrest, he started fighting with Richard again, resulting in both of them getting tazed by Donut Cop.
Season 3[]
  • In "The Boss" it is revealed that he considered Rocky a loser due to his job as a janitor and his lifestyle, causing them to have a distant relationship.
  • In "The Butterfly" he constantly caused problems to the Elmore citizens, such as purposefully driving slow in order to stall them, driving through a puddle in order to water a citizen, taking Larry's parking spot for no reason, other than to taunt him and pretending to give a ride to a hobo, resulting in him getting hit by a pole.
Season 4[]
  • In "The Sale" he was constantly rude to Gumball and Darwin, even though they only try yo make good memories with him, even using a vaccum cleaner to wipe them away, while singing a song about him.
  • In "The Love" it is revealed that he consistently fought with Margaret during their marriage, throwing her into a puddle of water and letting her fall down on a hill.
  • In "The Night" he fought with Margaret in a dream and took joy in hurting her in the process.
Season 5[]
  • In "The Stars" he tried to kill his own wife, Margaret Robinson, by having termites eat her, backfiring when the termites eat a trash can instead.
  • In "The Diet" he tried to run over Richard, due to blocking his way earlier to flex his muscles.
Season 6[]
  • In "The Intelligence" he once again tried to kill his own wife, by having her burned at the stake, for being accused of being a witch.
  • In "The Understanding" once he got hold of it, he tried to burn his marriage certificate, even thanking Margaret when she gave him a lighter to do so.
  • In "The Heart" he revealed that he hates Gumball and Darwin, making a lot of rude and insulting comments about them such as saying that not even a microscope can find beauty inside them or stating that they make their life choices after the horoscope.
    • Even when he tried to reconcile with Gumball and Darwin he did some questionable things, such as attempting to brainwash them using Cold War CIA techniques, stalking them whereever they went (including their own house) along with some other followers of them in an attempt to get them more followers, attempting to give dangerous toys to them, resulting in blowing up his own house due to shooting a toy containing uranium and insulting them by saying that Gumball has big hips and Darwin's native language is Fishpanic.
    • At the end of the episode, it is revealed that he still hates Gumball and Darwin, albeit less.

The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball[]

TBA

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • Although trying to kill his wife Margaret out of spite allows him to pass the baseline, he fails the standards compared to Margaret herself, who has also tried to kill him and does worse villainous deeds in general, such as trying to kill Gumball and Darwin or endangering a mall by driving through it with a car. It also doesn't help that his wife is Pure Evil and tried to kill him too, diminishing the heinousness of the act.
    • Several of his actions rely on Fridge Horror, such as his attempted brainwashing of Gumball and Darwin with CIA tactics being very vague, or his nuclear explosion's effects on other countries not being shown on-screen, and being an accident.
  • Just like most Gumball villains, his character is a complete joke and none of his actions are taken seriously in the slightest.
  • He is pretty tragic since he lives a completely dull, failure-ridden life with a wife that he hates (and who hates him) and no true friends, and to make matters worse, he is frequently tormented for no reason by the antics of Gumball and Darwin, which is played for sympathy. A lot of the time he is just trying to get by or accomplish his goals (like performing a dance or selling his house), and Gumball and Darwin butcher it due to their obsession with him.
    • He is also a scapegoat for this reason, and is often subjected to painful slapstick, such as everything he went through in "The Debt" (such as spitting out his own heart and being crushed by a platform), him being electrocuted in "The Poltergeist", and Gumball accidentally unraveling his body in "The Sale".
  • Although he is usually a jerk, he can be friendly and affable with the Wattersons on occasion.
    • He is shown to have a soft spot for Gumball and Darwin, as there are many times where he is patient with them as they do his chores, or admits they aren't so bad. In "The Heart," he starts feeling emotionally empty when they distance themselves from him when he accidentally admits he "hates" them, feeling remorseful and trying to win back their friendship. In the end, he admits "I loathe you a little less than before," and smiles and tears up a bit when they hug him.
  • He cares about his son Rocky:
    • Although he is upset at his career choices in "The Boss" due to going back to work as a school janitor, he tries to contain his anger and pretends that he is not disappointed in him, partly so as not to hurt his feelings, which causes him to explode due to bottling up his emotions. Even beforehand, he was genuinely proud and excited learning that Rocky temporarily worked an office job.
    • In "The Heart," he is on better terms, as he consults Rocky for help on how to win back his friendship with Gumball and Darwin.
    • In "The Pool," it's revealed that he worked all of his life in order to provide a stable financial future for his son Rocky, and he attempts to bond with him via the pool he has in his backyard.
  • While his "care" for Margaret is rather toxic and inconsistent, there are still some moments where he shows a degree of affection or protectiveness towards her:
    • When the Donut Cop stuns her with his tazer in "The Car," he is enraged and tries to attack him.
    • When the Evil Turtle's babies knock her out in "The Nest," Mr. Robinson says her name mournfully and catches her fall.
  • He has standards, as he rightfully views his wife as monstrous and tells Gumball and Darwin that she is simply evil incarnate in "The Wicked," with no Freudian Excuse for her behavior. In "The Pool," he briefly questions why he is even with her.
  • In many episodes, he is just minding his business without doing anything particularly evil, and just gets pushed to his limit by the antics of the other characters, making him an anti-villain and somewhat grey-zoned character.
