~ Gru starting his career as a supervillain. |
Felonious Gru Sr. is the main protagonist of Illumination's Despicable Me franchise.
He is an infamous supervillain who drops his career for heroism after adopting three orphaned girls.
He is voiced by Steve Carell, who also voices his twin brother Dr. Nefario.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
In General[]
- He consistently leaves Kyle in his neighbor's garden so that he can ruin it.
- He consistently crashes into cars in his way.
- No matter how much he had reformed away from his villainy after his redemption, he still shows respect for other villains like El Macho for their past crimes and never showed remorse for his previous villainy either.
Minions[]
- He stole Queen Elizabeth's crown and then taunted Scarlet Overkill over her downfall.
- While he did stop Scarlet Overkill by freezing her, that was just to satisfy his villainous deeds and not out of any actual heroism.
Minions: The Rise of Gru[]
- He infected a whole movie theater with a fart bomb.
- With Stuart's help, he stole a bunch of teddy bears.
- He cheese rayed everybody and stole ice cream from the ice cream cafe.
- He stole the Zodiac Stone from the Vicious 6 when they rejected him, although they all deserved it.
- When Otto accidentally gave the Zodiac Stone to a boy in his birthday party, he then threatens to fire all of the Minions, but then he rehires them after they saved his life.
- He made a promise to Silas Ramsbottom to stay out of trouble, however he already broke it due to committing several crimes between the events of this movie and Despicable Me.
- When Dr. Nefario was retiring from villainy and wanted to move on, he bribed him to become his new right-hand with him and his Minions' pleading faces, thus preventing him from reforming.
Despicable Me[]
- He stole the Time Square Jumbotron, the small Las Vegas Statue of Liberty, and the small Las Vegas Eiffel Tower prior to the events of the movie.
- He freeze rayed everybody and stole a muffin and coffee from a coffee cafƩ.
- He likely beheaded a lion and had a cat, dog and mouse killed and hung on a wall CGI prior the events of this film.
- Fred's dog (who Gru mentions is dead) is said to make up the "dog binoculars" (a pair of binoculars that looks like it is the eyes of the dog) that Gru uses as part of his own disguise while he was trying to get into Vector's Fortress. This likely means that it is possible that Gru killed Fred's dog for "laying bombs in his yard" and made it into a pair of binoculars.
- When Vector tried to befriend him, he savagely froze his head and left him to get his face eaten by his piranha. This resulted with them becoming enemies in the first place.
- He stole the shrink ray from the Russian Research center in order to use it to shrink the Moon and steal it.
- He tries to get back the shrink ray from Vector after he stole it with missiles, though thankfully Vector shrinks his ship down.
- He continuously tried breaking into Vector's home or trying to kill him to steal the shrink ray back after he stole it.
- He lied to Miss Hattie about being a dentist so he could adopt the girls and have them give Vector cookie robots to steal the shrink ray.
- After adopting the girls, he immediately neglects them by leaving them on their own despite none of them being responsible or old enough to take care of themselves.
- Although Edith survived this, he showed zero empathy towards her presumed death after the coffin she got stuck in closed.
- When Edith accidentally destroys Agnesās pet unicorn, he tries to make Agnes believe that the incident was her fault by berating her for caring too much about it.
- He berates Dr. Nefario for being so old after accidentally making boogie robots and a fart gun when he explicitly told him to make cookie robots and a dart gun.
- He uses the cookie robots to break into Vectorās house and indirectly tricks him into eating one after the girls give the disguised cookies to him.
- He stole the Shrink Ray from Vector by trespassing into his house.
- He had a fisherman knocked off the road and fall off the mountain due to his reckless driving.
- He attempted to leave the girls on a roller coaster without an adult, and would have succeeded if he didn't get warned by a staff member.
- He blew up Space Killer so that Agnes could steal the Carnival Bakerās unicorn, although he deserved it for making the game rigged.
- When the girls messed up his presentation, he threatened to stuff them all in pizza crust.
- He stole the moon, which revealed a werewolf's true identity and injured two surfers.
- Although he returns the moon back to space, he did it only because he wanted to save the girls that he regretted giving back from Vector rather than any remorse over his damage of stealing the moon, not to mention how that happened indirectly.
Despicable Me 2[]
- He sprayed Jillian with a hose just because she annoyed him by asking him to go on a date.
- He tried to freeze Lucy before even getting to know her and was very rude and ungrateful when meeting Silas Ramsbottom.
- Him not building safety rails in his Jelly Lab caused a Minion named Donny to get stuck in a jar after accidentally tripping and falling out of a Fruit Bucket for the rest of the movie. He showed no empathy for him and never tried to get him out of it.
- He froze Antonio Perez, El Machoās son, when he found out that he dumped Margo and started dancing with another girl, although he deserved it.
Despicable Me 3[]
- He crushed a neighboring car into a building when he realized that it had the same abilities as his own car.
- He tried to kill Dru's butler Fritz before even getting to know him.
- After being convinced by his brother Dru, he committed multiple crimes on Freedonia and enjoyed doing them, showing that he does not reject corruption and has zero problem with giving into villainy.
- This makes him a hypocrite since he rejected the Minionsā offer to return to villainy earlier in this movie, El Machoās offer to rule the world with him in the previous film, and told him at the end of the movie āNo villainy tonight!ā despite never atoning for any of those crimes in the slightest, but then he gave into Druās offer over committing multiple crimes in Freedonia.
- He had a fight with Dru who wanted to steal the diamond from Balthazar Bratt simply for the sake of being evil while Gru stole it to get his and Lucyās jobs back, and when Dru snapped at him, Gru almost broke him by telling him that he accomplished nothing throughout the whole theft plan and he just screwed up to show how much of a failure his dad thought he was.
Despicable Me 4[]
- He helped Poppy Prescott steal his professorās skunk. While this was pragmatic as he didnāt want his true identity to be revealed, he nonetheless enjoyed doing it without any remorse and didnāt tell Lucy about this.
- He was very arrogant to Maxime Le Mal, even visiting him in prison primarily to gloat about stealing his song for the talent show which is the whole reason he went after Gru's family.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- While his acts of extreme terrorism pass the general baseline, him stealing the moon didnāt endanger or kill anyone and therefore he seriously fails the high heinous standard to Scarlet Overkill and El Macho, who both attempted mass murder. Resources donāt help as Gru has the same advanced weaponry that Scarlet had access to and he and El Macho are both army leaders. Additionally, he fails the standard even harder to Balthazar Bratt, who only had a single weaponized robot, a weaponized keytar and bubblegum but still attempted to launch Hollywood into space while knowing all the citizens could have been killed.
- Just like almost every other character in Despicable Me, he is constantly played for laughs and is not taken seriously in the slightest.
- He is very tragic, as he was separated from his twin brother Dru, constantly picked on by his peers in school, was isolated there just cause he accidentally touched a girl named Lisa when he tried to ask her out, and was raised by a cruel and perverted mother named Marlena who had no regard for him in the slightest, which traumatized him and made him a villain, and all of those scenes were played for sympathy.
- He gets along with his mentor, Wild Knuckles, and the two bond after all of his henchmen left him, and he even mourned him after he thought Knuckles was dead. He also stole the moon as a promise to his mentor.
- Even during his time as a villain, he is shown to be honorable as he tipped the cashier of the coffee shop where he froze the people in, despite having no pragmatic reasons to do so. He also tried his best to keep Agnesās pinky promise in going to her dance recital, and he was genuinely upset when he found out he was too late.
- Even before he redeemed himself, he already had standards as he didn't approve of the Carnival Baker after Agnes hit the spaceship without knocking it over after after he mocked her over losing, Gru blasted his game (which he deserved as he may have rigged it) and won Agnes her fluffy unicorn.
- He genuinely cares about the Minions and Dr. Nefario, his wife Lucy, his brother Dru, his dog Kyle, as well as his three adopted daughters, Margo, Edith, and Agnes. He is also genuinely heartbroken when the girls had to be sent back to the orphanage and when Dr. Nefario, and later most of the Minions, left him.
- He redeems himself from his bad parenting and saves Margo, Edith and Agnes from Vector. He becomes a member of the anti-villain league after that and stop various villains who pass the heinous standards such as El Macho and Balthazar Bratt to take care of his adopted daughters and make sure they are safe thus passing the admirable standards.
