Fairy Godmother: It's time to stop living in a fairy tale, Shrek. She's a princess, and you're an ogre. That's something no amount of potion is ever going to change.
Shrek: But I love her.
Fairy Godmother: If you really love her... You'll let her go.
~ The Fairy Godmother cajoling Shrek to relinquish Fiona.
I told you, ogres don't live happily EVER AFTER!
~ The Fairy Godmother's villainous breakdown and most famous quote as she tells Shrek that he and his kind cannot live happily ever after before attempting to destroy Shrek, as well as her last words before her death.

The Fairy Godmother is the main antagonist of DreamWorks' Shrek franchise.

Just like in her origin story, she is a magical fairy. However, her personality is different from her classic counterpart's personality. She originally made a deal with King Harold to have Charming rescue Fiona from the Dragon's Keep and free her from the curse which makes her turn into an ogress by night, but her plans were foiled when Shrek and Donkey rescued Fiona before Charming could arrive. She is the mother of Prince Charming.

She was voiced by Jennifer Saunders.

Her Evil Ranking[]

Her Villainous Deeds[]

  • She made a deal with King Harold and Queen Lillian that she would keep Fiona locked away in a tower guarded by a dragon and that only Prince Charming will rescue her on the condition of helping break her curse. This makes her indirectly responsible for the deaths of dozens of knights who would try to come and rescue her.
    • Despite the Fairy Godmother not being aware of the deaths that she had caused, it is still made 100% clear that she knowingly endangered the lives of Fiona as well as anyone who tried to rescue her by imprisoning her in a tower guarded by a dragon.
    • It is heavily implied she was the one who cursed Fiona in the first place.
  • She tricked Fiona into thinking that Prince Charming was Shrek and manipulated the real Shrek into believing Fiona did not love him and that he needed to let go of her, not caring about how he would feel about this.
  • She threatened to undo Harold's transformation and turn him back into a frog if he didn't comply with her and have Fiona marry Prince Charming.
  • She created a love potion to have Fiona forcibly fall in love with Prince Charming, mentioning that she has done it many times before (which is basically the magical equivalent of drugging her).
  • When she caught Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots overhearing their plans, she incriminated them by labeling them as bandits and thieves, which led to them being arrested.
  • When Shrek arrived to reunite with Fiona, she tried to kill him only for King Harold to jump in the way and reflect her magic back onto herself, causing her to accidentally kill herself in the aftermath.
    • While Charming was genuinely saddened by this, she still deserved her death for trying to drug Fiona and no one else in the kingdom mourned her.
  • She was indirectly responsible for Charming's takeover in the third movie as his actions were in her honor.

Why She Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • While her attempting to force Fiona to fall in love with Prince Charming against her will is bad enough to pass the general baseline, she still massively fails the heinous standard to Humpty Alexander Dumpty who nearly got all of San Ricardo destroyed, Rumpelstiltskin who attempted genocide on ogres, and Big Jack Horner who tried to destroy the world with the Wishing Star, all of whom have lower resources.
    • The only thing that could've helped her pass the in-story standards is the fact that she was the very same witch to curse Fiona, but it's not confirmed.
    • While her imprisoning Fiona in a tower guarded by a dragon caused dozens of knights to get killed, there is no indication she knew that would happen and likely just wanted to send her son Prince Charming to rescue Fiona, making this unintentional. This is another reason she fails the in-story standard.
  • Throughout her interactions with Prince Charming, she is shown to genuinely care for him.
  • While mostly taken seriously, she has some minor comedic moments, such as the song she sings to Fiona, her interrupting her son's speech about his journey to the tower so she can give it herself, and having her cart go to a drive-thru saying her diet is ruined.
  • She has a Pet the Dog moment where she asks Harold if he wanted anything to eat while ordering from a restaurant’s drive-thru without any pragmatic reason, showing she at least has some decency.

Trivia[]

  • It is commonly theorized that the Fairy Godmother was actually the witch that cursed Fiona to turn into an ogre as part of her plot for Charming to marry her. Should this be confirmed, it would make her even worse and she could easily be promoted to Near Pure Evil (she would also be this heinous if the heinous standards of the franchise were lower).
    • According to the script for the first Shrek film, the unidentified witch's full name is Dama Fortuna, which, suspiciously, is also the Fairy Godmother's real name.
  • Fairy Godmother, along with Prince Charming, were originally intended to return in Shrek Forever After in Rumpelstiltskin's alternate timeline, as they never died in that timeline as Shrek was never born. However, they were scrapped for unknown reasons. Had she been kept, it is unknown if it would've affected her VB status.
  • She and Prince Charming are the only Shrek villains to be Villainous Benchmarks, while Lord Farquaad is Pure Evil and Rumpelstiltskin is Near Pure Evil.
  • She is the first main antagonist of a PDI feature not to be Pure Evil.
