Envy is the secondary antagonist of the Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 series. He is the son of Dante and Hohenheim and the stepbrother of Edward and Alphonse Elric. He is very similar to his manga and 2009 anime counterpart, however, this version is an even bigger sadist than the original, and gets his fun out of ruining people's lives.

He is voiced by Mayumi Yamaguchi in the Japanese version, and Wendy Powell in the English dub version.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

  • Assisted Dante with her plans to acquire a Philosopher's Stone, killing many people and ruining many lives.
  • Holds an intense hatred for the Elric brothers since they received Hohenheim's love, wanting to get revenge on them and inflict as much pain onto them as possible.
  • Kills Hughes, transforming into his wife to mock him and make him hesitate before shooting him and leaving him to bleed out.
  • Manipulates Wrath into working for the Homunculi by feeding him Red Stones and turning him into a spiteful and vengeful child, using him as a pawn.
  • Sealed Greed, his brother, in the Fifth Laboratory for more than a century, continuously antagonizing him when he broke free.
  • When Sloth asks why he had Wrath put in the Elric's path, assuming it was to keep them on the trail of the Philosopher's Stone, Envy gleefully says he only set Edward up with Wrath just to see him suffer.
  • When being informed of Greed's death, Envy brushes it off and says Dante can make another Greed.
  • Kidnaps Alphonse to have Dante use his Philosopher's Stone.
  • When Wrath asks Envy to use the Philosopher's Stone to revive Sloth, Envy coldly kicks him away.
  • Unlike the other Homunculi, Envy openly states he has no interest in becoming human, viewing them as inferior creatures and taking pride in his status as a Homunculus.
  • Coldly ignores Gluttony's grief over the death of Lust and orders him to eat Alphonse's Philosopher's Stone, and while he appears mildly shocked when Dante lobotomizes Gluttony, he ultimately doesn't show any true concern over it or criticizes Dante for her actions.
  • Holds Wrath down while Dante summons The Gate to take away Wrath's arm and leg, preventing him from using the Stone to resurrect Sloth.
  • Stabs Ed through the heart, killing him instantly while proclaiming his desire to kill every human one-by-one until only Homunculi are left.
  • Envy tries to stop Alphonse from reviving his brother, Ed.
  • Kills his father, Hohenheim.
  • Though Envy does have a tragic past of being abandoned by his father, Hohenheim, and holding jealousy against his two sons for receiving his love, Envy is far beyond this tragedy, and it doesn't excuse his cruelty towards humans and his fellow homunculi.
  • Holds no love towards his mother, Dante, only following her for his own convenience and because he gets to indulge in his own pleasure of killing humans under her rule. Ironically, Dante didn't cared about this and Dante herself showed no concern for Envy either.
  • Unlike his manga and 2009 anime counterpart, whose sadism and hatred toward humans is out of insecurity and deep-seeded jealousy of their inner strength and who displays at least a basic level of loyalty and kinship towards his fellow homunculi, this version has no real reason for his actions towards humans beyond pure sadism, and holds no love or loyalty towards any of his fellow homunculi, never showing any grief over their deaths and perfectly willing to turn against them if it suits his cause.

Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]

  • While he passes the baseline with all his crimes, including his plan to kill all the humans, he suffers from off-screen villainy because although it is claimed that he killed people in the past his exact kill count it is never shown. Additionally, he suffers from Fridge Horror as it is unknown if when he killed Hohenheim he was aware at the time he was about to be sacrificed to give Dietlinde full access to "Shamballa". These facts makes him to fail the heinous standards to multiple villains:
    • Dante, who started the events of the series and indirectly caused countless wars through Pride, sacrificed multiple innocents for a Philosopher's Stone, possessed women to women before getting into Lyra's body, and thought about having sex with her husband and his eldest son Ed that could've indirectly rape Lyra while possessing her.
    • Pride, who caused a number of war crimes and war instigations through neighboring countries, being the one indirectly responsible for Rose's rape, as well as killing his own son right in front of Roy Mustang.
    • Solf J. Kimblee, who murdered hundreds in the Ishvalan War, killed Scar's brother and turned numerous innocents into bombs for the sick pleasure of it.
    • Barry the Chopper, who has fewer resources actually manages to stand out for killing his wife, mutilating and killing women as a sick hobby, and joins a mercenary group just for the sake of killing.

Trivia[]

  • Envy was once considered Pure Evil but was removed after deciding that he suffers from too much Fridge Horror and off-screen villainy, leading him to fail the high heinous standards.
