~ Drake |
Drake is the main antagonist of Don Bluth's 8th animated feature film The Pebble and the Penguin. He is the arch-nemesis of Hubie.
He was voiced by Tim Curry.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He forces Hubie to give him the pebble he found for Marina, and when Hubie refuses, he tosses him into the sea in an attempt to sacrifice him to the Leopard Seal.
- He shows no remorse when Hubie has gone missing from Antarctica, and takes pleasure in tormenting Hubie.
- It is heavily implied that he lied to his rookery (with the notable exception of Marina) that Hubie died, when in reality, Hubie was 3,000 miles away from the Antarctic.
- He has lustful feelings for Marina, despite that he does not genuinely love her and simply wanted her to be his mate for her beauty.
- He sexually harasses Marina and blackmails her to choose him as his mate, which is akin to marital rape, with the threat of banishment if she fails to choose a mate by the Full Moon Mating Ceremony.
- Though he has petrels as his pets, it is unknown if he cares for them (partially because they only interact in one scene), it is highly likely he doesn't at all because he has no problem snapping at them simply for laughing their heads off, scaring them away. He likely doesn't care for his henchmen either, as he has no problem doing the same thing to them twice.
- Right after Marina rejected him, he threatens to feed her to a shark if she doesn't choose him over Hubie.
- Having lost his patience the night before the Full Moon Mating Ceremony, he kidnaps Marina, intending to force her to be his mate despite her protests.
- After apparently surviving his fall, Drake returns one last time to finish Hubie and hurls a large stone at him and Rocko in an attempt to crush the both of them, right before his demise, despite never having interacted with the latter.
- Though he suffers a gruesome death by getting crushed by his own collapsing tower, it isn't played for sympathy nor laughs, and is a well deserved comeuppance for all the crimes he has committed.
- He lacks any redeeming qualities and is taken completely seriously.
- While he does have a few comedic moments such as him mocking Hubie's stuttering when he was talking to his pet skuas, him snapping at his skuas for simply laughing their heads off, his reaction to Marina rejecting him to the point he believes she's joking, him falling flat onto his back after being bit by Hubie, and Hubie punching him with him sticking his tongue out and losing his balance as a result, the narrative and the characters take him completely seriously.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- While he manages to pass the baseline due to attempting to force Marina to be his mate, the rest of his villainy does not stand out beyond this which makes him fail the individual capacity. For example, while he is seen chewing a bone with his pet skuas, it is unconfirmed whether those bones are of penguins he has killed in the past or not, meaning this crime relies on Fridge Horror. Also, him wanting to kill Hubie is a shared act with the Leopard Seal and orcas despite not being affiliated with either. Plus, he has more resources than them.
Trivia[]
- Not counting villains introduced in sequels, Drake is the first ever Don Bluth villain to have a page on this wiki.
- Drake is the first villainous benchmark to come from a 1995 animated film and is the only one to come from a traditionally animated film of the same year.
