Dr. Ivo Gerald Robotnik, also known as Eggman, is the main antagonist of the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
He is a brilliant yet unstable and narcissistic roboticist who planned to take Sonic the Hedgehog's powers for himself in order to conquer the world. Like many of his counterparts in the franchise, he is the titular protagonist's arch-nemesis. He is also the grandson and former protégé of Professor Gerald Robotnik, the cousin of the late Maria Robotnik, and the boss of Agent Stone.
He was portrayed by Jim Carrey.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
In General[]
- He regularly abuses Agent Stone, all the way up to punching him in the stomach for no reason. He also considered him a dumb "know-nothing", even if admitting he is smarter than most humans.
- He has a massive ego and a hatred for humanity, believing them to be inferior to his him and his machines.
Background[]
- In childhood, when he got punched in the face by a school bully, he got revenge through an unknown incident which made the bully eat his meals through a straw for a year, even though Tom Wachowski points out the correct action would have been to report the bully to the principal.
- He was somehow involved in a coup in Pakistan and uprising in Azerbaijanistan, which were both implicitly violent events and, in the latter's case, his actions caused Azerbaijanistan to cease to exist as a country.
Sonic the Hedgehog[]
- Upon realizing that the cause of the massive power outage is an alien named Sonic, he decided to capture and experiment on him so he could gain his power.
- He threatened to kill Tom Wachowski, an officer of the law, with his Badnik if he didn't tell him where Sonic was.
- He tried to kill Tom and Sonic to get the latter's powers and as revenge for the former hitting him in the face.
- He falsely labeled Tom as a domestic terrorist to the public after their first encounter.
- He threw an injured man out of a window in a restaurant when he refused to tell him where Sonic went.
- He planned to take over the world when he realized just how powerful simply one of Sonic's quills is.
- He was perfectly fine with killing Maddie, Tom's innocent wife, just for being on Sonic's side, calling her "collateral damage."
- While he was shocked when Sonic dropped Tom and Maddie off a building, he quickly brushed it off and tried to justify his reaction by claiming he expected an unexpected event.
- He chased Sonic all over the world in the Egg-Pod while constantly launching missiles at him, endangering many people.
- He almost killed Sonic and was about to fight all of Green Hills' citizens when they stood up to him.
- He was responsible for all of Agent Stone's actions in the Pre-Quill through leaving him a manifesto telling him what to do to continue his legacy while he's gone.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]
- He burned several predatory mushrooms while stuck on the Mushroom Planet.
- He teamed up with Knuckles the Echidna to kill Sonic, while secretly using him to further his own goals, taking sadistic joy when watching the two fight.
- He tried to kill Sonic and Tails upon his return to Earth, knocking out and nearly killing the latter.
- After gaining the power of the Master Emerald, he quickly betrayed Knuckles and left him to die, mocking him for his gullibility.
- He absorbed countless metal to make the Giant Eggman Robot, including a moving train.
- Immediately after creating the Giant Eggman Robot, he began walking toward an entire military force, intending to chase them off.
- He tried to kill Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the Giant Eggman Robot.
- He gloated to Sonic that with the Master Emerald's power, he will enslave all of humanity, force them to service his machines, and conquer the entire multiverse.
- He almost crushed Sonic, Tom, and Maddie with the Giant Eggman Robot.
- He feigned remorse and begged for mercy when Sonic became Super Sonic, trying to kill him one final time.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3[]
- Despite initially agreeing to work with Sonic to stop Shadow, it was for pragmatic reasons since he wanted to find out who was stealing his robots, and he quickly betrayed him and his friends for the sake of supposedly ruling humanity with his grandfather Gerald.
- He assisted Gerald in trying to destroy GUN Headquarters, which would kill millions.
- He attempted to help his grandfather steal the key and help him with his plans, and while he was unaware of Gerald's plans of destroying the world, he still wanted to rule the entire world with him.
- In the process of trying to steal said key, he forced his grandfather to test laser-bending suits that he wasn't sure would work on deadly security measures within G.U.N. HQ, casually admitting he didn't think they would work to protect anyone wearing them up until exactly that moment.
- Even after his redemption, he never shows any remorse for his crimes.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- Despite passing the baseline by helping his grandfather Gerald Robotnik try to destroy GUN Headquarters and kill millions, he fails the high heinous standards to him and Shadow the Hedgehog, who both attempted to destroy the Earth with similar resources.
- He is often played for laughs, such as the running gag of him licking Sonic's quill, dancing when he is alone, complementing Agent Stone's lattes, flossing to Knuckles, quoting the Wicked Witch of the West, saying that Knuckles is "as useless to me as a backstage pass to Limp Bizkit," his defeat in the second movie of shouting "Later, hater!" to Sonic while he's falling down to his supposed doom, and commenting on him and his grandfather being played by the same person.
- He has a soft spot for Agent Stone, as although he abused him in the first movie, he admits that he missed him when they reunited in the second movie and lets him join him when he's building the Giant Eggman Robot. Furthermore, he showed visible concern for Stone and previously left a manifesto for him to read outlining his inevitable return. Before he sacrifices himself in the third movie, he admits that he is in fact appreciative of him, realizing that Stone was his only real friend.
- He has standards, being absolutely appalled by the fact that Gerald wanted to wipe out humanity. Unlike his game counterpart whose standards were merely pragmatic since he would attempt to destroy the world himself later on, this Robotnik’s standards were genuine, seeing as how he seemingly sacrifices his life to save the world even though this meant he wouldn't be able to rule it.
- This also makes this version of Eggman Unintentionally Heinous, as him helping advance Gerald's potential destruction of humanity was obviously not his intention.
- This is also another factor that makes Eggman fail the heinous standards to his grandfather as he has access to some of the highest resources in the Sonic Cinematic Universe, but holds back on his resources too much to be NPE or even PE.
- He has a legitimately tragic backstory of being orphaned and bullied as a kid. While he initially claims it never affected him and he’s happy not to have friends, the third movie reveals it actually did and he does legitimately wish for companionship deep down.
- He loves and cares for his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, was overjoyed to see him alive, and was hurt once Gerald made it clear that he never cared for him, which is played for sympathy. Even when he was moments away from being dropped to his death, Ivo still wanted to tell Gerald that he loved him, though he went against it once the latter mocked him over it.
- He redeemed himself to save the Earth from Gerald with the help of Shadow and sacrificed himself to do so.
Trivia[]
- He is the first and currently only official version of Dr. Robotnik to redeem himself.
- Dr. Robotnik was initially Inconsistently Heinous but was then removed due to being believed to rely too much on Fridge Horror.
- Ironically despite his Villainous Benchmark status, his original counterpart was the icon of the candidates for deletion at the time AND he himself was the icon of the candidates for cleanup on Inconsistently Heinous Wiki before being cut.
- Ironically, he and his grandfather have opposite statuses to their mainstream counterparts - Eggman is normally Near Pure Evil and Gerald is normally the Villainous Benchmark in the games/IDW canon, but now is the other way around in the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
- In an interview promoting the first movie, Jim Carrey described Dr. Robotnik as "pure, unadultered evil." However, the final version is far from Pure Evil due to relying on Fridge Horror for some of his misdeeds, being played too much for laughs, loved ones, and finally redeeming himself. It's unknown if the filmmakers ever intended to portray Robotnik as such in the planning stages.
- Robotnik's grandfather Gerald would have been a posthumous antagonist in early concept art for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 where his skeleton is shown. Had this been the case, Robotnik may have qualified as Inconsistently Heinous since he would be the primary villain of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 alongside Shadow the Hedgehog.
- As Jim Carrey has stated he’s open to the possibility of returning for the fourth Sonic movie, his Villainous Benchmark status could change in the future. However, this is unlikely due to his redemption in the third movie.
