Villainous Benchmark Wiki

This Villainous Benchmark was Headlined on February 2025.

You know, I won't miss you when you're gone. Human beings are unreliable and stupid, and I care very little about them. But my machines are diligent. Relentless. They're everything to me!
~ Dr. Robotnik proudly admitting his hatred for humans and affinity for machines.
Papa's got a brand new 'stache! Ha!
~ Dr. Robotnik upon reuniting with Agent Stone and his most famous quote.
I'm going to enslave humanity and force them to service my machines. First Green Hills, then the universe, then the multiverse, then who knows? Maybe that'll be enough. Full disclosure: You won't be there.
~ Dr. Robotnik revealing his true plans to Sonic.

Dr. Ivo Gerald Robotnik, also known as Eggman, is the main antagonist of the Sonic Cinematic Universe.

He is a brilliant yet unstable and narcissistic roboticist who planned to take Sonic the Hedgehog's powers for himself in order to conquer the world.

Like many of his counterparts in the franchise, he is the titular protagonist's arch-nemesis. He is also the grandson and former protégé of Professor Gerald Robotnik, the cousin of the late Maria Robotnik, and the boss of Agent Stone.

He was portrayed by Jim Carrey.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

In General[]

  • He regularly abuses Agent Stone, all the way up to punching him in the stomach for no reason. He also considered him a dumb "know-nothing" at one point, even if admitting he was smarter than most humans.
  • He had a massive ego and a hatred for humanity, believing them to be inferior to him and his machines.
  • While he has many comedic moments which make him played for laughs, he is still taken seriously by Sonic and friends in universe.

Background[]

  • In childhood, when he got punched in the face by a school bully, he got revenge through an unknown incident involving technology (implied to be a robot) resulting in the bully having to eat his meals through a straw for a year, even though Tom Wachowski pointed out the correct action would have been to report the bully to the principal.
  • He was somehow involved in a coup in Pakistan and uprising in Azerbaijanistan, both implicitly violent events, and, in the latter's case, his actions caused Azerbaijanistan to cease to exist as a country.

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

  • Upon realizing that the cause of the massive power outage is an alien named Sonic, he decided to capture and experiment on him so he could gain his power.
  • He threatened to kill Tom Wachowski, an officer of the law, with his Badnik if he didn't tell him where Sonic was.
  • He tried to kill Tom and Sonic to get the latter's powers and as revenge for the former hitting him in the face.
  • He falsely labeled Tom as a domestic terrorist to the public after their first encounter.
  • He and Stone broke into Wade's police office and threated Tom over the phone.
  • He threw an injured man out of a window in a restaurant when he refused to tell him where Sonic went.
  • He planned to take over the world when he realized just how powerful simply one of Sonic's quills was.
  • He was perfectly fine with killing Maddie, Tom's innocent wife, just for being on Sonic's side, calling her "collateral damage".
  • While he was shocked when Sonic dropped Tom and Maddie off a building, he quickly brushed it off and tried to justify his reaction by claiming he expected an unexpected event.
  • He chased Sonic all over the world in the Egg-Pod while constantly launching missiles at him, endangering many people.
  • He almost killed Sonic and was about to fight all of Green Hills' citizens when they stood up to him.
  • His defeat and imprisonment was played for satisfaction due to how much he hurt Sonic and Tom.
  • He was responsible for all of Agent Stone's actions in the Pre-Quill through leaving him a manifesto telling him what to do to continue his legacy while he's gone.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]

  • Although he's trying to survive, he burned several predatory mushrooms while stuck on the Mushroom Planet.
  • He teamed up with Knuckles the Echidna to kill Sonic, while secretly using him to further his own goals, taking sadistic joy when watching the two fight.
  • He tried to kill Sonic and Tails upon his return to Earth, knocking out and nearly killing the latter.
  • After gaining the power of the Master Emerald, he quickly betrayed Knuckles and left him to die, mocking him for his gullibility despite the fact that the former actually considered him his friend.
  • He absorbed countless metal to make the Giant Eggman Robot, including a moving train.
  • Immediately after creating the Giant Eggman Robot, he began walking toward an entire military force, intending to chase them off and potentially kill them.
  • He tried to kill Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles in the Giant Eggman Robot.
  • He gloated to Sonic that with the Master Emerald's power, he will enslave all of humanity, force them to service his machines, and conquer the entire multiverse.
  • He almost crushed Sonic, Tom, and Maddie to death with the Giant Eggman Robot.
  • He feigned remorse and begged for mercy when Sonic became Super Sonic, trying to kill him one final time.
  • Even though his second defeat is comedic with him yelling LATER HATER, it is also karmic for all of his crimes.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3[]

  • Despite initially agreeing to work with Team Sonic to stop Shadow, it was for pragmatic reasons since he wanted to find out who was using his Badniks without his permission, and he quickly betrayed them for the sake of supposedly ruling humanity with his grandfather Gerald.
  • He assisted Gerald in trying to destroy GUN Headquarters, which would kill millions.
  • He attempted to help his grandfather steal the key and help him with his plans, and while he was unaware of Gerald's plans of destroying the world, he still wanted to rule the entire world with him.
  • In the process of trying to steal said key, he forced his grandfather to test laser-bending suits that he wasn't sure would work on deadly security measures within G.U.N. HQ, casually admitting he didn't think they would work to protect anyone wearing them up until exactly that moment.
  • When Agent Stone tried to warn him about his grandfather's real plan, Ivo refused to listen to him and outright accused him of being jealous and cruelly fired him as well despite everything they've been through, which really upset him.
  • He killed his own grandfather Gerald by shoving Sonic's super powered quill up his butt and causing him to fly into the energy field of the Eclipse Cannon which subsequently zapped him into nothingness.
    • While this was justified as Gerald tried to kill him first and he (Ivo) was preventing Gerald from destroying the world, Ivo still showed some level of sadism while killing Gerald and even mocked him saying Gerald made one hell of a bug sapper.
  • While he didn't mean to point the Eclipse Cannon's laser at the moon, he wasn't remorseful as he blamed it on Tails and Knuckles.
  • Even after his redemption, he never shows any remorse for his crimes, and admits he still wishes to rule the world.
  • Despite him being betrayed by his grandfather and his death both being played for sympathy, they don’t make him a scapegoat due to his previous actions.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • Despite passing the baseline due to his intentions to use the Eclipse cannon to kill everyone in G.U.N HQ despite knowing it would endanger millions of Londoners, he fails the high heinous standard of the film series to Professor Gerald Robotnik and Shadow the Hedgehog, who both attempted to destroy Earth with lower resources, whilst Ivo didn’t know the full scope of this plan until it was too late.
    • Whilst he has the unique crime of parricide, this is treated as a heroic act as Ivo was preventing an omnicide in the process. This is also in self-defense because Gerald previously tried to kill him.
    • Another reason he fails the standard is that he slightly suffers from Fridge Horror. Not only is it unconfirmed how bad his slavery or him forcing people to serve his machines would be, it's also unknown whether or not he actually killed anyone prior to killing Gerald despite all the destruction he caused.
      • While the scale is high, it's expected for power-hungry villains to take over as much area as possible and make conditions vaguely "bad". It's also not notable due to how high Robotnik's resource tier is - he is a scientist with vast machines and technology, an entire force under his command, and even the Master Emerald, an object so powerful that it is stated within the movie that it “could threaten all life in the universe" and turn thoughts into reality. Robotnik even calls himself all-powerful with the Emerald and was able to build the Death Egg Robot, and finally, scale or not, his slavery is still super vague on how bad it is. So while the scale is high, it thusly does not prevent him from suffering from too much Fridge Horror.
      • His past involvement in foreign conflicts falls under offscreen villainy and also relies on Fridge Horror as it's unknown how much damage or deaths he caused.
      • While did cause one of his bullies to forced to eat through a straw for a year, it is also relies on Fridge-Horror due to not clear bad the injures are beyond being hospitalized.
      • He is also Unintentionally Heinous, as him helping advance Gerald's potential destruction of humanity was obviously not his intention.
    • However, since he is a more of personal enemy to Sonic and Tails than the other two and drives the main conflict of the trilogy, he doesn't fail too much.
  • He is affable toward his minions for no pragmatic reason.
    • He has a soft spot for Agent Stone, as although he abused him in the first movie, he admits that he missed him when they reunited in the second movie and lets him join him when he's building the Giant Eggman Robot.
      • Furthermore, he showed visible concern for Stone and previously left a manifesto for him to read outlining his inevitable return.
      • Before he sacrifices himself in the third movie, he admits that he is in fact appreciative of him, realizing that Stone was his only real friend.
    • While their sapience is debatable, he genuinely cares for his Badniks and makes sure to retrieve them from the person who stole them, even referring to them as his babies.
  • He has standards, like when Sonic shoves Tom and Maddie off a building, Robotnik is shocked, and even states, "I was not expecting that" In the first film, and in the third film, showing genuine shock at the fact that Gerald wanted to wipe out humanity as opposed to ruling the world with him.
    • Unlike his game counterpart whose standards were merely pragmatic since he would attempt to destroy or take over the world himself later on, this Robotnik’s standards were genuine, seeing as how he seemingly sacrifices his life to save the world even though this meant he wouldn't be able to rule it.
  • Even in the second film, despite being enemies with him, he genuinely admires Tails’ intellect., even saying he’s smarter than him
  • He has a legitimately tragic backstory of being orphaned and bullied as a kid.
    • While he initially claims it never affected him and he’s happy not to have friends, the third movie reveals it actually did and he does legitimately wish for companionship deep down.
    • And according to his own grandfather (which Ivo supposedly told him off-screen), all his life he had been "rejected by the world" with no-one caring about him down there which Ivo felt emotionally wounded by feeling that, meaning that he did want respect by society.
  • He ultimately redeemed himself by saving the Earth from Gerald with the help of Shadow and even seemingly sacrificed himself to do so.
    • He also supposedly cooled off in the beginning of the third movie where he falls into a depression and retires from villainy after his second defeat and the destruction of the Eggman robot, but was manipulated to go back to it by his grandfather. This shows that, even before his redemption, he was kind of On & Off.
  • His supposed death during the climax of the threequel is heavily played for sympathy, as he broadcasts one final speech to a distraught Agent Stone while sad music plays in the background as a montage of flashbacks of Shadow and Maria play before Ivo seemingly dies to prevent Gerald's municide from occurring, with Stone crying at his boss's presumed demise.
    • Even Sonic is saddened by his and Shadow’s sacrifices, saying that people always have a choice, despite everything he did.
    • Another reason he is played for sympathy is he loved and cared for his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, as he was overjoyed to see him alive and was hurt once Gerald made it clear that he never cared for him.
      • Even when he was moments away from being dropped to his death, Ivo still wanted to tell Gerald that he loved him, though he decided against it once the latter mocked him over it.
      • While he does cheer after Gerald’s death even mocking him saying he made one hell of a bug sapper this was justified due to all the heinous actions Gerald committed.

Trivia[]

  • He is the first and currently only official version of Dr. Robotnik to redeem himself.
  • Dr. Robotnik was initially approved Inconsistently Heinous after the second movie came out, but was then removed due to relying too much on Fridge Horror.
    • Although he passed the general baseline in the third movie, he was still deemed to fail the in-story standards to Gerald and Shadow.
  • Ironically despite his Villainous Benchmark status, his original counterpart was the icon of the candidates for deletion at the time AND he himself was the icon of the candidates for cleanup on Inconsistently Heinous Wiki before being cut.
  • He and his grandfather have opposite statuses compared to their mainstream counterparts. In the games/IDW canon, Eggman and Gerald are Near Pure Evil and Villainous Benchmark/Inconsistently Admirable respectively, but it's the other way around in the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
  • If he didn't have sympathy or reform, he still would have been a combination of insufficiently heinous and almost heinous and if in addition to that, he lacked preventions outside of either failing the heinous standards or caring about his minions, he would have been a Silly NPE.
    • This was ironically the case in the first two movies where he was portrayed as a completely irredeemable psychopath that is hated by everybody in-universe, especially Tom who said Sonic will be more human than he ever is, and initially didn’t even seem affected by his soon-genuine tragedy.
  • In an interview promoting the first movie, Jim Carrey described Dr. Robotnik as "pure, unbridled evil." However, the final version is far from Pure Evil due to relying on Fridge Horror for some of his misdeeds, caring for Agent Stone and his Badniks, and showed many more redeeming qualities in the third movie before finally redeeming himself. It's unknown if the filmmakers ever intended to portray Robotnik as such in the planning stages.
    • However, considering Robotinik has no redeeming qualities besides being comedic in the first movie, and not everyone analyzes evil by the wikis' standards, with concepts like "Fridge Horror", it is possible Jim Carrey was being genuine in his first impression.
  • Robotnik's grandfather Gerald would have been a posthumous antagonist in early concept art for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 where his skeleton is shown. Had this been the case, Robotnik may have qualified as Inconsistently Heinous since he would have been the primary villain of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 alongside Shadow the Hedgehog.
  • As Jim Carrey has stated he’s open to the possibility of returning for the fourth Sonic movie, his Villainous Benchmark status could change in the future. However, this is unlikely due to his redemption in the threequel, unless he somehow subverted it and return to villainy, which may be possible since he still wants to rule the world.
  • He is the icon of the Rename template.
