“ | Make sense? Oh, what fun is there in making sense? | „ |
~ Discord's most famous quote. |
“ | Who cares? I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. I'm Discord, the master of chaos! You think you can boss Discord around? You think I'm just going to turn all this back because you say so? Because if I don't, I'll lose the one friend I ever had? Oh. Oh… well played, Fluttershy… well played. | „ |
~ Discord's first redemption. |
“ | If Twilight has magic to give, it will be yours. Soon there won't be a pegasus, earth pony, or unicorn who will be able to stand up against us! | „ |
~ Discord right before Tirek betrays him. |
“ | I assure you, I am very real. And you have all been brought here as part of my plan to rid Equestria of Twilight Sparkle and her friends… once and for all. | „ |
~ Discord while posing as Grogar. |
Discord is a major antagonist of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and the main antagonist of the first story arc of the 2022 Generation 5 comics. He is Princess Celestia and Princess Luna's former arch-nemesis, Fluttershy's best friend and presumed boyfriend, and Lord Tirek's archenemy.
He is the Spirit of Chaos who seeked to caused havoc in Equestria thousands of years ago, before he was imprisoned by Celestia and Luna. After that, he was released from his prison, he once again began his chaotic reign of terror before being imprisoned once again by the Mane Six. He was then released by them so they could reform them, which took some time.
He was tempted back into villainy by Tirek, who he helped steal magic from the ponies of Equestria until he was betrayed and then apologized. He later decided to disguise himself as the late Grogar and bring back Tirek, Queen Chrysalis, Cozy Glow and King Sombra in order to indirectly encourage Twilight to become a brave and noble princess, but this ultimately backfired.
He is voiced by John de Lancie.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
Season 2[]
- He turned Equestria into a chaotic wasteland. While his intention wasn't exactly to hurt people, he still showed no remorse for the destruction he caused.
- After being released from his imprisonment, he steals the Elements of Harmony and taunted Celestia and the Mane Six about it so that they wouldn't imprison him again.
- During a maze challenge he forces the Mane Six to do, he turns them into the exact opposite of what they represent to ensure that they can't stop him.
- He once again turns Equestria into a chaotic realm, resulting in several casualties.
Season 3[]
- He turns a squirrel, a bunny, and a group of beavers into wild and savage animals, who would later go on to flood Sweet Apple Acres, and while he did change the squirrel and the bunny back to normal, it was only because the Mane Six threatened to turn him back into stone.
Season 4[]
- It's revealed that before he was imprisoned by Celestia and Luna, he planted the Plunderseeds, which would later grow into dangerous plants that threatened to lay waste to Equestria and imprison Celestia and Luna in the Tree of Harmony a thousand years later.
- To make it worse, when the Mane Six confront him for this, he takes no responsibility for what he did and chooses not to help them fix the problem he caused.
- He ruins Princess Cadance's visit to Ponyville by pretending to be sick and forcing them to take care of him just so he can see if Twilight was still his friend.
- He reverts back to his old evil ways and helps Tirek absorb magic from all of Equestria, betraying his friends despite everything they did together.
Season 5[]
- He tries to send Tree Hugger to another dimension after he becomes jealous that Fluttershy hung out with her more than him, and when the Smooze starts causing trouble at the gala, Discord doesn't care and at one point, he uses him to immobilize the Mane Six so that they can't stop him.
- Even after redeeming himself, he still continues to be quite inconsiderate and obnoxious, which is proved when he convinces the Mane Six not to invite Twilight to their hangover just to make her feel left out.
- In one alternative timeline he's shown to have turned Equestria into a chaotic wasteland once again after breaking free and without anyone stoping him.
Season 6[]
- When Spike and Big Mac start making fun of him, Discord traps Big Mac in a giant bubble until he stops laughing, forces him and Spike to have fun his way, and then transports them inside the game Ogres and Oubliettes, forcing them to fight enemies that could've seriously hurt them.
Season 8[]
- He tricks the Mane Six into going on a friendship quest that wasn't real and they ended up being chased by monsters in a cave.
- He then used their vacancy as an opportunity to wreak havoc at the School of Friendship by hiding an Ursa Major in Trixie's hat, setting a Bugbear on the students, and terrorizing them when they go on a scavenger hunt.
Season 9[]
- Although his intention was good, he allowed King Sombra do the awful things he did which resulted in the Tree of Harmony being destroyed, the Everfree Forest going nuts and nearly the conquer of Equestria.
- He and the Mane 6 even claimed the he could have stopped him before but he didn't.
- He unintentionally ruins Big Mac's proposal to Sugar Belle by having an apple monster say a poem about what Big Mac was going to say.
- He is revealed to be the overarching antagonist of this Season; bringing Chrysalis, Tirek, Cozy Glow and King Sombra together under the disguise of the late Grogar in order to have them attack Twilight, in a misguided attempt to encourage her that she has what it takes to rule Equestria.
Generation 5 comics[]
- After Queen Opaline had ignited racial tensions between the ponies by shoving Fluttershy, he ultimately decides he must destroy the Unity Crystals; believing that magic is a threat to Equestria, though he manages to come back to his senses after Izzy shows him Fluttershy's video message.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- He fails the heinous standards to Lord Tirek, Cozy Glow and Queen Chrysalis, the former two of whom are bog standard or rely on fridge horror to pass the baseline. While he does help Tirek absorb magic in "Twilight's Kingdom", this isn't played with any horror as all it does to ponies is depower them, and while he does later cause Tirek, Cozy Glow, and Chrysalis to go on a rampage and conquer Equestria in Season 9, they all went beyond what Discord intended.
- He also fails to King Sombra and Sunset Shimmer who both did worse with less resources. Although Discord enabled the former to do the bad things he did on his second revival (even claiming he could have stopped him before), it's not enough for him to stand out due to not knowing what Sombra would do apart from reconquering the Crystal Empire.
- After Tirek betrays him, he apologizes and resolves to start a genuine friendship with the Mane Six.
- He is almost never taken seriously and is played for laughs in almost all his appearances.
- He is On and Off, doing multiple heroic and villainous deeds throughout the series for both the show and the comics.
- As the Spirit of Chaos and Disharmony, the trouble he causes can partly be explained as due to his very nature and biology rather than just because. In the Season 7 episode "Discordant Harmony" he is shown to disappear from existence if he completely stops being chaotic.
- His terrible actions are sometimes shown as be done out of a desire to help in his own way, from being misguided on friendship or from simply not thinking things through rather than malicious intent.
- He feels remorse for his actions multiple times, such as realizing what he did when he brought back Tirek, Chrysalis and Cozy Glow to attack Twilight and helped the Mane Six stop them in the final battle, even imprisoning them the same way he was. He also showed some sadness when Tirek started absorbing magic from the Mane Six.
- He genuinely cares for Fluttershy, with this being the reason why he was able to redeem himself and later convinced that magic was a threat after Queen Opaline shoved her.
