| “ | Flash: What you told me about your home world, that was a lie wasn't it? You weren't the heroic rebel leader. You were the despot. The one who inflicted pain and suffering. Who killed to get what he wanted. Despero: I did what was necessary. Flash: No, you're wrong. You've been wrong this whole time about everything. You're no hero, Despero. You're just like Thawne. |

Despero is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Reverse-Flash) of the 2021 Arrowverse crossover, Armageddon which is a part of Season 8 of the 2014-2023 TV Series, The Flash.
He is a powerful and intelligent Kalanorian from the future possessing incredible telepathic powers who left his homeworld, Kalanor, under mysterious circumstances. Now he’s facing a deadly mission on Earth: to prevent Armageddon, one whose outcome will decide the fate of humankind and put him on a collision course with Team Flash.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He became the tyrannical ruler of his homeworld Kalanor, inflicting pain and suffering onto innocent people and killing others to get what he wanted. This led a team of rebels to cause a war against him, resulting in countless casualties on both sides.
- Upon learning Barry Allen was supposedly responsible for the destruction of the world, Despero traveled back to 2021 to kill him, not realizing it was Eobard Thawne manipulating events to cause Armageddon. It’s heavily implied that Despero wanted to take over the earth and only wanted to prevent its destruction for that reason.
- He attacked the Central City Tech Convention to lure the Flash there so he could kill him.
- He lied to Barry about his origins, claiming that he was the leader of the rebellion seeking to overthrow the tyrant ruler of his homeworld, just to manipulate Barry into believing his intentions were noble.
- He turned on the Particle Accelerator to boost his powers and then brainwashes the radiation workers at S.T.A.R. Labs into attacking and killing each other.
- He nearly kills Rosa Dillion after reading her mind to find out the Flash’s location.
- He kidnapped all of Team Flash’s members and brutally tortured them all to death with his psychic powers when they refused to tell him the Flash’s location, leaving only Cecile Horton alive, although this was undone when Barry reversed the Armageddon timeline.
- He tried to convince Barry to let Thawne die when the latter was being erased from existence in order to prevent him from causing another Armageddon.
- He possessed Mia Queen to kill Team Flash and Thawne.
- He attempted to destroy Central City and all of its inhabitants just to kill Thawne and prevent Armageddon.
- After the Flash defeated him and removed his connection to the Flame of Py’tar, Despero vowed revenge on Barry and the entire earth.
Why He Doesn’t Stand Out?[]
- He fails the Heinous Standards of the Arrowverse, when compared to Barry Allen’s other enemies, such as Eobard Thawne, Zoom, Savitar, The Thinker and Bloodwork.
- He sought to prevent the destruction of the earth by killing Barry Allen due to him believing him to be the cause of it. He later tries to kill Eobard Thawne as well to prevent him from causing another Armageddon, making him a well-intentioned extremist. Though it is implied that Despero wanted to take over Earth just like on his homeworld, this was never explicitly confirmed and thus he never subverted this redeeming quality.
- He has some honor as he refused to kill the Flash while unarmed and preferred to kill him in battle. He allows the civilians at the CCTC to run before battling the Flash. He gives the Atom a chance to flee as his fight was with Barry. He gives Barry a chance to prove he wasn’t the villain Despero claims he is.
Trivia[]
- The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace has stated that, had The Flash been renewed for an additional tenth season, the Arrowverse would have had a "Blackest Night" crossover event in which Despero would have invaded the Earth again and force the Flash to gather all of the Justice League whose formation was hinted at the end of the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" five-parter crossover. However, as The Flash was only renewed for a ninth season, these plans were cancelled. Had the plans gone through, it’s possible Despero’s status could’ve been affected as he likely would’ve gotten more heinous and possibly even qualify as Inconsistently Heinous, Near Pure Evil, or even Pure Evil.
