“ | Killing is your destiny Sanzō, there can be no turning back. It is who you are. | „ |
~ Dante |
Dante is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Magnus) of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
He was the leader of the legendary city of Azra, a city on an island ruled by Dark Ones. He is the father of Sanzō and Kannin, training them to be killers so that one day the citizens of Azra can attack the rest of the world and kill anyone who does not possess the Gift, although this plan eventually comes to an end after the Black Lotus attacks and destroys the city, leaving only a few survivors.
He was portrayed by Nicholas Goh.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He and the other elders of Azra wanted to take the world in the name of the golden city, destroying those who opposed them and either forcing everyone to accept the Gift or killing them if they were not born with it.
- He personally kills two Black Lotus members who were caught sneaking into Azra and keeps the third, Magnus, alive only because he wants his young son Sanzō to go through with it. When Sanzō makes it clear he doesn't want to be a killer, Dante says that it's who he is, and he must be the one to execute Magnus.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- His main crime of wanting to kill those without the Gift is a massive case of off-screen villainy and Fridge Horror, as it is mainly retold to us by Kannin when she tries to dissuade Pilgrim from his conquest for the Badlands, as while Pilgrim does claim he is fulfilling the elder's plan, it's unclear if Dante wanted to force everyone to have the Gift rather than kill those that didn't have it, meaning it's very possible that Pilgrim's mass slaughtering of those born without it wasn't something the elder's of Azra ever intended. This is further mitigated by the fact that Pilgrim himself was not born with the Gift, and if Dante wanted everyone without the Gift dead, he likely would have never allowed Pilgrim to be raised in Azra.
- He did genuinely seem to care about his two children and Pilgrim, calling them the future of their civilization.
