His Villainous Deeds[]
In General/Background[]
- Like the rest of the Black Order (Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw), he was a member of a world destroyed by Thanos in his quest to wipe out half the universe. Thanos took the orphaned Obsidian and raised him as his own child, training him to be a deadly member of the Black Order. Though he lost his planet because of Thanos, this doesn't make him sympathetic.
- As with his fellow siblings, he was disliked by Gamora and Nebula. It's also unknown whether he truly cares about them as Maw left him behind in New York so he could take Strange to the ship and he is also unfazed when Maw dies after being sucked into space. Also Proxima and Corvus show no concern about his demise during the Battle of Wakanda.
- Though it could be argued that he is insufficiently characterized, he has a level of personality and agency as he is the physically strongest member of the Black Order, is quite vicious and bloodthirsty and is willing to help Thanos in his half universal-omnicide.
Avengers: Infinity War[]
- In 2018, he and the rest of the Black Order accompanied Thanos on his quest to acquire the Infinity Stones.
- He was involved in Thanos' s father's attack on the planet Xandar to gain possession of the Power Stone (the Orb), which he used to destroy Xandar.
- He participated in Thanos' assault on the Statesman in search of the Space Stone following the destruction of Asgard by Surtur. There, he and his siblings killed half of the Asgardians on board.
- He attempts to fight the Hulk when the latter engages Thanos in combat and he only backs off because Maw told him to, knowing that Hulk doesn't stand a chance against Thanos.
- Once Hulk is defeated and sent back to Earth by Hemidall (who ends up being killed by Thanos), Obsidian helps his siblings in forcing Loki Laufeyson in surrendering the Space Stone (the Tesseract) to Thanos. After Thanos kills Loki, Obsidian escaped with his family as Thanos uses the Orb to destroy the Asgardians' ship, leaving a helpless Thor to drift in space.
- He and Maw are sent by Thanos and assigned to collect the Eye of Agamotto (the Time Stone), and tracked down its current location in New York City, where they laid down an attack in to draw Iron Man, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange (the current holder of the Eye) into the scene. Despite the heroes' efforts, Maw managed to capture Strange and flies away on his ship, intending to deliver the Eye to Thanos at the planet Titan while Obsidian meets up with Proxima and Glaive after their failed attempt to collect the Mind Stone.
- He, Proxima, Glaive and Obsidian are sent to Wakanda by Thanos, ordering them to lead a massive army of Outriders to attack the country and obtain the Mind Stone at all costs. This forces several Avengers and Wakandan warriors to fight back against the massive army.
- When Steve, Natasha and T’Challa refused to give them the Mind Stone, Obsidian and Midnight unleashed the Outriders from their Dropships to attack. Upon entering, Obsidian used his hammer to strike James Rhodes, knocking him down.
- He murders several members of the Border and Jabari Tribes, until he was attacked by T'Challa's kinetic energy pulse.
- Once Wanda Maximoff joined the fight and Proxima ordered Glaive to take the Mind Stone, Obsidian took notice and assisted Glaive into attacking Vision in the nearby forest. He then used used his hammer to violently hit Vision, sending him deeper into the forest.
- Engaged in a fight against Bruce Banner wearing a Hulkbuster suit. Though he managed to tear off one of Banner's arms and attacked Banner with his hidden blade, Banner set the arm flying by activating its thrusters, sending Obsidian into the force field protecting Wakanda until he exploded to his death.
Avengers: Endgame[]
- He along with Thanos and the rest of the Black Order engages in a final battle with the Avengers and their revived allies. Cull began to fight Iron Man before being stepped on and subsequently killed by Giant Ant-Man.
- After his final death, his severed forearm was recovered by the United States Department of Damage Control and kept in their custody. In an attempt to gain superhuman DNA in order to become Super-Skrulls, members of the Skrull Resistance infiltrated Damage Control and retrieved Obsidian's arm. Obsidian's severed limb was then studied by the Rosa Dalton Skrull, who used the Super Skrull Machine to transfer Obsidian's DNA to Gravik, granting him access to Obsidian's physiology and abilities.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- His high kill count, alliance with Thanos and leading the Outriders to attack Wakanda allow him to pass the baseline, he fails the heinous standards to Thanos himself, as his actions are done under his orders and Thanos wiped out half the universe after completing the Infinity Gauntlet. Him working under Thanos is also shared with Loki and Ronan, who both commanded an army and had access to an Infinity Stone. Loki commanded the Chitauri and invaded Earth under Thanos' orders, leading to mass destruction on New York and and Ronan destroyed Skrullos and Kylos, murdered billions of people and was empowered by the Power Stone, even using it to wipe out the entire Nova Corps fleet.
- He also fails the system standards as his crimes are shared with Maw, Proxima and Corvus, who are also loyal to Thanos and are sent by him to retrieve the last four Infinity Stones after obtaining the Space and Power ones. He and Maw are sent to New York to gain the Time Stone and he later aids Proxima and Corvus in gaining the Mind Stone.
