ā€œ You want to know why they put me in charge? It's because I'm willing to do what needs to be done. Good soldiers follow orders. ā€ž
~ Crosshair to an Elite Squad Trooper before executing him for insubordination.
ā€œ Hunter: Crosshair, forget the Empire. This isn't you. It's your inhibitor chip. We can help you.
Crosshair: Wrong. I had my chip removed a long time ago.
Hunter: Since when?
Crosshair: Does it matter?
Hunter: Yes.
Crosshair: This is who I am.
ā€ž
~ Crosshair claiming that his inhibitor chip had been taken from him and that he was fully aware of his vile choices.

CT-9904 (nicknamed "Crosshair") is one of the four tritagonists of the Bad Batch arc of Season 7 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and one of the three tritagonists (alongside Tech and Echo) of its 2021 spin-off/sequel Disney+ animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch.

Despite being one of the main characters of The Bad Batch, he becomes a villain and turns against the other members of Clone Force 99 after Order 66 was executed in the pilot episode, believing he has a purpose in the Empire. Due to this, he serves as the secondary antagonist of Season 1 and Hunter's archenemy. However, he later had a change of heart in Season 2 after his fellow clone Mayday died due to Lieutenant Nolan refusing to give him a medic, which led to him redeeming himself and ending up rejoining Clone Force 99 shortly afterwards, with Dr. Royce Hemlock being his new and actual archenemy due to imprisoning him on Mount Tantiss.

Just like the rest of The Clones, Crosshair is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who also voices Klaus Heissler in American Dad!.

His Evil Ranking[]

His Villainous Deeds[]

The Clone Wars[]

  • Even before becoming a villain, he was already xenophobic towards "regs," best shown when he flicks his toothpick at Jesse as he remarks that he doesn't usually work with them and telling Rex that he would leave Echo for dead if he was him due to being a reg, though to be fair most of the regs treated him badly as well due to his mutations, making this understandable.
  • Even before becoming a villain, he was already very arrogant with his abilities, as he showed pride in killing many Battle Droids and believed Wrecker can't get as high of a kill count as him, visibly making him upset.
    • Also during a mission to Hylanth in Hyperspace Stories 11, he threaten to shot Wrecker's new toy, a doll from the wookie girl Viiveenn.
  • Despite initially having moral agency issues due to his chip influencing his actions, he still chose to stay with the Empire even after removing it, showing he has clear agency and that he is a villain by choice.

Season 1[]

  • During Order 66, he attempted to kill a teenage Caleb Dume, making him despise clones for many years due to this.
  • Tried to convince Hunter to kill Saw Gerrera's partisans and threatened to desert him if he doesn’t follow.
  • After his inhibitor chip effects were increased, he betrayed the rest of the Bad Batch and attempted to shoot them down. To drive the point on that he’s stripped himself of all loyalty towards them, he also replaced his armor with new Imperial armor to shed all of his good side under the Bad Batch.
  • Murdered one of Saw Gerrera's partisans when she refused to give the location of where he is.
  • Killed one of his men for refusing to hurt innocent civilians and ordered the rest to murder Saw Gerrera’s partisans and civilians. This may have motivated Saw to hate clones and refusal to trust Clone Force 99.
  • Under Vice Admiral Rampart’s orders, he attempted to kill his brothers and Omega again on a Star Cruiser wreckage, even going as far as to vaporize them with the Star Cruiser’s engines.
  • Shooting Orn Free Taa in the head, allowing Vice Admiral Rampart to blame Cham Syndulla for it. Granted, Taa was a very greedy senator, but that was still too much as Rampart later disposed him for no reason.
  • Ordering his men to arrest Howzer and 6 other clones after they betrayed the Empire.
    • It is later revealed by Howzer that around this time he is responsible for having multiple other groups of clones arrested for their treason and sent to Mount Tantiss as well some of his men being killed by him.
  • He tries to convince Hunter to join the Empire, even going as far as to killing his own squad to make a point (although they all deserved it). When he refused, he attacks him and tackles him onto the ground, only stopping after seeing the other training droids were activated.
    • He also accuses them of never coming back for him. Hypocritically, he never even thought about coming back to them, as Wrecker had stated.
  • After having his chip removed, he willingly chose to stay with the Empire and accepts who he is as a soldier of the Empire, showing that he's not a villain by proxy and rejected the chance to redeem himself. He then attempted to kill Hunter once more only to be stunned.
  • He once again rejected redemption after Hunter offered him to rejoin their squad and chose to stay with the Empire even after they left him for dead, solidifying Tech’s point about him being incapable of change and that Wrecker should let him go.

Season 2[]

  • Killed Governor Ames despite Commander Cody talking her into surrendering. While he only intended to save his life, this made Cody feel disillusioned by the Empire and desert.
  • Murdered Lieutenant Nolan out of revenge (although he deserved it).

Season 3[]

  • He initially intended on deserting Omega if he escapes himself, but began to bond with her in the following months they were imprisoned together and came to agree with her escape plan.
  • Initially tells Omega to leave Batcher along with him as they escaped. However, he does regret this and starts bonding with Batcher as well.
  • Almost gave into his temptations to kill Emerie Karr only for Omega to make him stand down.
  • Intended on using violent methods to getting off of the planet Lau, however this is pragmatic because they had to escape and this was necessary when Captain Mann intended to bring them back to Dr. Hemlock.
  • Even after his redemption, he is still arrogant as he made some snarky comments towards Omega, called her naĆÆve for trusting Asajj Ventress and doubted Wrecker would survive after being severely injured by a beast.
  • Along with Hunter and Wrecker, he initially tries to attack Ventress out of fear that she is going to hurt Omega and due to her past Separatist connections, as well as violating his agreement in leaving her alone in the tests, which prevented Omega from reaching her full potential, although he did come to understand her motives later on.
  • He almost gave into his temptations to kill Edmon Rampart after finding him in an Imperial labor camp. He also constantly taunted him and treated him like a butt-monkey on the way to Mount Tantiss along with Wrecker. However, this is reasonable because Rampart destroyed Tipoca City and Rampart often mistreated clones like leaving Crosshair to die or mocked that their loyalty is not what is used to be.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

  • Despite passing the general standards, he fails the high in-story standards of the Star Wars franchise to multiple other villains. Ironically, the main antagonist of the series, Dr. Royce Hemlock, did far worse acts than him with similar resources, and he fought against him when he realized he would go for great lengths to find his former squad .
  • He still cares about his squad which is why he decides not to report their survival to Admiral Rampart and killed 4 of his men for refusing to stand down. Him helping them escape Kamino may have allowed him to respect them again despite being on opposite sides and he let them leave peacefully.
  • At least a decent portion of his actions in season 1 aren't truly his fault, due to his inhibitor chip influencing his actions.
  • He respects Cody and is upset to hear of his defection from the empire. Also, he only killed Governor Ames so that Cody's life can be spared when Governor Grotton threatens him.
  • He develops a genuine friendship with fellow clone Mayday and mourned his death.
  • He is honorable as he genuinely offers Hunter to join the Empire and have him become his brother again instead of killing him and was upset when he refused.
  • He also cares for Omega as while he does attempt to separate Omega from the Bad Batch in the season 1 finale, he simply wishes to do so for her own good, as he believes staying with the squad only results in the young clone being put in danger. This only improves in Season 3 where they become the best of siblings and help each other escape Mount Tantiss, with Omega also inspiring Crosshair in redeeming himself for his past deeds.
  • He does show remorse on many occasions:
    • In season 1 episode 3, he shows by his emotions that he misses his brothers as he and his men enter their old room.
    • In season 1 episode 12, he feels reluctant to kill his brothers when Rampart tells him to. This is why he spared Hunter and offered him to join the Empire instead.
    • In the season 1 finale, he shows remorse a few seconds after not leaving with his brothers. He may have also shown insecurities in that he doesn’t truly belong with them. Prior to this, he does have an emotional talk with Omega and he does show some hesitation as well before hardening his heart again.
    • In season 2 episode 3, he becomes increasingly conflicted after his friend Cody deserted the Empire.
    • In season 2 episode 12, he shows remorse over being unable to help his friend Mayday recover from his injuries before he died.
    • All of these eventually made him finally snap out of it and want to desert too towards the end of season 2.
    • When reuniting with Hunter, he comes clean and tells him that he genuinely regretted all of the crimes he did under the Empire and wishes to be a better person and Hunter forgave him.
    • He also showed remorse for missing the shot on CX-2’s ship.
    • His remorse for his past crimes culminates throughout Season 3, to the point where he wants to sacrifice himself to atone for all of them.
  • He has a sense of honor and standards as he saves Omega to repay her for saving him, refuses to tell Rampart that his brothers are still alive, is disgusted by Rampart refusing to address Cody by name rather than number, and Nolan for refusing to help Mayday and refuses to join Dr. Hemlock’s plans for keeping the clones in Imperial service for this reason. He also has a soft spot for Emerie Karr due to her treating him with kindness in his imprisonment.
  • He is too sympathetic to be Pure Evil or Near Pure Evil. His tragedy goes as follows:
    • Unlike the other CT-99s, his chip had been modified by a very tiny bit just so that he can execute Order 66. This got the attention of Tarkin and as a result, his chips effects had to be increased. Although AZI complied with increasing the effects of the chip, he was only blindly following Imperial orders not knowing they changed for the worse, and sided with the Bad Batch after the Empire tried to decommission him as well.
    • For many years, he was isolated from the other clones due to his mutations, as they all made fun of his appearance and not wanted to sit with him in the mess hall, thus making his xenophobia against them somewhat understandable since they were mean to him first.
    • He was treated with nothing but disrespect by his new squad and he ultimately had to kill all but one of them when they refused to stand down against Hunter.
    • As stated above, he had many moments of doubt over his actions as part of the Empire.
    • His homeworld was destroyed and he was left on the planet for 32 rotations with no food or water. Not to mention, Vice Admiral Rampart left him to die there after his last Elite Squad soldier escaped, and when he found him, he only used him for pragmatic reasons from then on.
    • He was upset when Cody, the only friend he had, left the Empire. He was also upset over hearing Cody’s life get threatened by Grotton.
    • He was extremely upset when Mayday, the only friend he had after Cody, died, showing that he does in fact start to care about his fellow clones.
    • It's played for sympathy when he was captured, tortured and then incapacitated by the Empire before being imprisoned, thus making him a scapegoat because he was consistently treated with contempt by nearly everybody around him in spite of doing nothing to deserve it and this pulled the last straw in his horrible life that only became worse and worse.
    • He suffered from a tremor in his hand due to the trauma he received on Barton-17 and Dr. Hemlock’s torture. This prevented him from getting accurate shots any longer. This also made him frustrated and he practices coping skills with Omega. It was later cut off by CX-2 when he was captured again, leaving him with one less hand to use for the rest of his life.
    • He was distraught when Pabu was attacked and Omega got captured again due to surrendering herself to CX-2.
    • As stated above, he showed too much regrets over his actions even after his redemption and wished to go infiltrate Mount Tantiss by himself because he believed that it's what he deserved as a punishment for all he did. However, Hunter and Wrecker refused to leave him behind despite him leaving them behind before and he was only able to stop being broken by his past when he finally retires on Pabu for the rest of his life after his hand was cut off and he put an end to Dr. Hemlock's life.
  • He starts as On & Off, as he takes a break from his Imperial service and puts his differences with the Bad Batch aside to help them destroy the remaining Training Droids and escape when Tipoca City was collapsing without any hint of wanting to throw them under the bus and saves Omega and AZI from drowning out of gratitude for saving his life in the Season 1 finale, before making the ultimate choice to redeem himself in Season 3. Afterwards, he reconciles with his squad, Rex and Howzer and becomes much more selfless and heroic than before while also subverting his villainy and most if not all of his corrupting qualities and atoning for all of his past crimes by defeating and killing Dr. Hemlock.
