The Sith. The Sith took everything from me. Ripped me from my mother's arms. Murdered my brother. Used me as a weapon and then cast me aside. Abandoned me! Once I had power, now I have nothing. Nothing.
~ Darth Maul reciting his tragic backstory to Ezra Bridger.
You know, you used to tell me that my laugh was a condition, that there's something wrong with me. There isn't. That's the real me. "Happy". Funny. I haven't been happy for one minute of my entire f-cking life. You know what's funny? You know what really makes me laugh? I used to think that my life was a tragedy. But now, I realize, it's a f**king comedy.
~ Arthur Fleck accepting himself as the Joker while killing his adoptive mother, Penny
We we're once the High Guard. We witnessed Sentinel's betrayal. Saw the Primes fall. Since that day we've been fighting from the shadows, doing whatever we can to sabotage Sentinel.
~ Starscream explaining his and the High Guard's tragic past.

Villainous Benchmarks who are confirmed to possess traumatic and sympathetic backstories that motivate their villainy and sustain themselves despite their villainous acts.

Important Note: Do not add Completely Evil villains to this category as absolutely nothing justifies their actions. Even if they had a backstory that was genuinely tragic, it still does not justify their actions. In those cases, they should go under Envious and/or Vengeful instead of this category.

They are the opposite of Fake Tragic Villainous Benchmarks, VBs whose "tragedies" are not sustainable because they are too hideous, petty and/or exaggerated. Likewise, their counterparts are Tragic Heroic Benchmarks.
