| ~ Keith revealing his racism upon seeing Leota Adebayo, and his most infamous quote. |
Keith Smith, also known as Captain Triumph, is a major antagonist in the second season of the HBO Max original series Peacemaker.
He is an alternate version of Keith Smith, Peacemaker’s older brother, from Earth-X. Unlike his main-universe counterpart, he wasn’t accidentally killed by Chris as a child and grew up alongside him. However, since Earth-X was conquered by the Nazis in World War II, Keith became a white supremacist and a brutal enforcer of their regime.
At first, he supported his brother, but upon discovering that the Chris Smith he knew was actually a doppelgänger from another dimension who had killed Earth-X’s Chris, Keith turned against him. When a misunderstanding led to their father’s death at the hands of the 11th Street Kids, Keith went on a vengeful rampage, determined to kill Peacemaker.
He was portrayed by David Denman.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
Background/In General[]
- With the help of his brother (Earth-X Peacemaker), he helped enforce the Nazis' rule over the United States, which included capturing minorities and imprisoning them in camps.
- Although he was raised in a world ruled by the Nazis, he doesn’t have a Freudian excuse, since several people on Earth-X aren’t bigoted. Moreover, his father, Auggie, was explicitly opposed to the beliefs of the oppressive, fascist government and tried to raise his sons to be different.
Peacemaker (Season 2)[]
- He murdered several members of the Sons of Liberty and allowed their helicopter to crash in a highly populated area, endangering countless civilians.
- Upon spotting Adebayo, a Black woman, walking down the street, he rallied an angry mob to chase her, intending to capture or kill her.
- He got upset at his father for preventing him from killing Earth-1 Peacemaker to avenge his brother's death.
- After both Vigilantes broke into their home and murdered his father, Keith attacked and attempted to kill Peacemaker and the 11th Street Kids.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- Although he passes the baseline by being complicit in the imprisonment and genocide of minorities, in addition to endangering countless civilian lives, he fails the heinous standards of White Dragon (his alternate father from Earth-1), who committed significantly worse crimes with similar resources.
- Even taking into account that he is from an alternate universe and shouldn't be compared to the heinous standards of the mainline DCU, his crimes still rely too much on Fridge Horror, as it's unknown exactly how many minorities or POC he's helped capture or kill.
- Despite his Darwinist views and racial prejudice, he is a genuinely kind and affable person who cares for many people and has several Pet-the-Dog moments:
- He genuinely loves his brother and father, and is seen frequently bonding with them, talking about past experiences while drinking, making jokes, and laughing. His love for his brother is also evident in how he interacts with Earth-1 Peacemaker (whom he initially believed to be his actual brother), where he tells Chris that he loves him, encourages Chris to work things out and mend his relationship with Harcourt, and shows concern for Chris when he suspects him to be on a binger.
- He is also shown to be close to the Harcourt of that universe, as he attempts to bond with Earth-1 Harcourt and is happy (albeit surprised) to find her at their home.
- When two kids ask the Trio for selfies in a diner, although he is initially hesitant, he eventually agrees to take a picture with their young fans, and does so gleefully.
- He is sympathetic, as he was genuinely hurt upon learning that his actual brother was accidentally killed by Earth-1 Peacemaker, and that the Chris he had been bonding with the past few days wasn't from their reality. He was so upset in fact that he wanted to murder Peacemaker to avenge his brother. He also cries over his father's dead body and vows revenge against Peacemaker and the 11th Street Kids. While attacking Chris, he shouts "WHAT DID YOU DO TO US?!" blaming Chris for ruining his and his family's lives.
- He is on & off. While he was responsible for many crimes against minorities, he was also part of the Top Trio (alongside his father and brother), and helped save hundreds of people by defeating a giant kaiju attacking the city.
Trivia[]
- He was originally intended to be killed by Harcourt. However, James Gunn chose to keep him alive, leaving open the possibility for him to return in a future project. Therefore, his status could change.
