Caine is the secondary antagonist and deuteragonist of the 2023 neo-noir action film John Wick: Chapter 4, the fourth installment of the John Wick series.
He was a blind and extremely skilled assassin, who was coerced to assassinate his old friend John Wick by the Marquis, by holding his daughter, Mia, hostage. He, alongside Chidi, does the dirty work by killing anyone who dares to aid Wick in any way. He eventually found his freedom and success when his aforementioned target and friend killed his blackmailer in a duel.
He was portrayed by Donnie Yen.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He aided the Marquis about John Wick's other friends and their locations, knowing that he himself is also his friend and associate.
- Throughout the film, he chases after Wick and attempts to kill him many times until the ending.
- He partook in the massacre by attacking and murdering the Osaka Continental employees, only after Chidi called him to do so.
- He killed Koji Shimazu in an encounter, after the latter refused to give information on Wick's whereabouts. This caused Akira to seek vengeance upon him for her father's death in the post-credits scene, which abruptly ends before her commitment happened.
- He engaged in a pistol-wielding duel against Wick at sunrise on Sacre-Coeur, where he delivered a final and fatal shot to Wick, incapacitating him directly. Wick's wounds were too critical to ensure his survival, because after the duel had ended emerging the latter victorious, he succumbed to his injuries and died in peace.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- He ultimately fails the heinous standards of the franchise, as he lived in a world full of assassins who most likely have done the same as his crimes. Unlike the Marquis, who blackmailed him to commit his worst by leveraging his daughter's life.
- He is also considered an anti-hero, grey-zoned, and a villain by proxy character for various reasons:
- He frequently declined his service to the Marquis until the latter uses his daughter, showing how he never favored to return in the assassin life until the risk of losing someone loving or befriending.
- He is idealistic to Akira Shimazu and lets her go after being forced to kill her father. He did this to ensure her safety from the High Table, knowing her involvement with her father would place her in danger.
- He warned Mr. Nobody before the twisting offer, acknowledging his daughter's situation while it potentially happens similarly with his dog throughout the film.
- He aided John Wick, his supposed and assigned target, to the duel at sunrise, redeeming himself at the story's conclusion. This also indirectly saved Winston from forfeiture, as his result of Wick not arriving in time would've ended up with him dead, stated by the Marquis.
- In short, he regrets committing his worst actions and was willing to make himself up for it by redeeming himself in the end.
Trivia[]
- The main actor for Caine, Donnie Yen, also portrayed a blind character named Chirrut Imwe from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It is unclear if Caine was a complete foil to Imwe, considering that the latter is uncategorized for any good ranking (and that Caine is grey-zoned, meaning he's unqualified for any evil ranking). Even though that's the case, Imwe was one of the inspirations for Caine.
