“ | Ah, well... I attended Juilliard. I'm a graduate of Harvard Business School. I traveled quite extensively. I lived through the Black Plague and I had a pretty good time during that. I've seen The Exorcist about 167 times, and it keeps getting funnier EVERY SINGLE TIME I SEE IT! NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT YOU'RE TALKING TO A DEAD GUY! NOW, WHAT DO YOU THINK?! You think I'm qualified? | „ |
~ Beetlejuice on his qualifications, in response to Adam Maitland's question. |
Betel Geuse Jr., publicly known as Beetlejuice, is the titular main antagonist of Tim Burton's franchise of the same name.
He was a sinister, mischievous, and obnoxious ghost and self-proclaimed "bio-exorcist" who seeks to cause mayhem across the living world. In order to do so, Beetlejuice wishes to marry Lydia Deetz, a former teen goth who has the capability to communicate with the deceased. He is also the ex-husband and arch-nemesis of Delores Laferve, who was responsible for killing Beetlejuice and (posthumously/indirectly) locking him in his grave for his lack of freedom.
He was portrayed by Michael Keaton, who also voiced Chick Hicks in Cars, as well as Ken in Toy Story 3, and portrayed the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Morbius.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
Beetlejuice[]
- He lured in a sentient fly with candy and ate it, which counts as animal cruelty.
- He is shown to be quite nasty and offensive, as he tries to sexually assault Barbara Maitland numerous times, and has a somewhat demented fondness for Lydia even though he was also using her to be free to cause chaos among the living.
- He is shown that he is a foul-mouthed, demented, and troublesome ghost who seems to only care about himself and the chaos he brings, in which he sees as his profession as a freelance poltergeist.
- He proves that he cares nothing for the living, and would potentially kill someone without hesitation by his tricks. He also has no sense of boundaries, and is outright disgusting and obnoxious to the core.
- He shapeshifted as a snake to scare Lydia’s parents and Otho Fenlock, which he would've succeeded had not Barbara banished him back to the model.
- He wanted to marry Lydia while she was a teenager, which counts as ephebophilia. He's also pulling tricks on the Maitland couple when they interfered to save Lydia and try to banish Beetlejuice.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice[]
- When he mentioned his backstory and relationship with Delores while he was alive, he was a humble graverobber who stole the clothes of the freshly deceased corpses taken by the Black Plague.
- While he did honor his deal to help Lydia save her family and friends, it was done for pragmatic reasons so he would marry her.
- He made Bob dress up as himself, so that Delores would suck Bob's soul instead of his, allowing Beetlejuice the chance to make his getaway, which happened from later on.
- At the wedding, he turned Rory's several media influencers ugly and trapped them into their phones.
- He attempts to forcibly marry Lydia again; When Delia and Astrid tried to banish him, Beetlejuice pulled a ventriloquistic trick on them to join and sing along.
- He psychological abuses Lydia many times, forcing her to take pills and get over it.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- He massively fails the heinous standard to his vengeful ex-wife Delores, who went on a killing spree by sucking the souls of ghosts while going on a relentless pursuit for him as revenge without remorse.
- Most of his crimes amount to generic mischief and bog-standard villainy. Moreover, he is wildly unpredictable and is driven by his own amusement and impulses.
- Although he trapped several media influencers inside their phones, it's not confirmed if he put them through any kind of pain or even killed them, causing him to rely on Fridge Horror.
- He is lousy with comedic moments that promptly disqualify him to be NPE or PE, shown during his advertisement for the Maitland couple to hire him as a freelance "bio-exorcist", dispatching the Dean couple with hammer-like hands to send them flying through the roof, exposing Otho's outfit to a summer suit (much to Otho's dismay), providing Lydia a boxing glove to punch Rory, and giving a confused "What the f-ck?" reaction when confronted by Delores.
- He is tragic, as he was posthumously (and indirectly) imprisoned in his grave by Delores for his lack of free will.
- While he can be pragmatic when helping Lydia to save Astrid, he is genuinely honorable in his deals for starters, and never invokes any sort of loophole to screw over his clients of the Afterlife Call Center, even when it benefitted him without costs.
- Despite being lustful and obsessive towards Lydia, he does develop genuine love for her despite Lydia's rejections. Moreover, he is not discouraged from trying again to win Lydia over in the foreseeable future.
- Though he is rather troublesome and obnoxious, he can be certainly affable to his Shrinker employees in the Afterlife Call Center, and treats Bob (his best friend and loyal servant) quite fondly, even entrusting him to take care of the bio-exorcism business when Beetlejuice and Lydia went to save the latter's daughter, Astrid.
- He is on-&-off, as he committed heroic acts in some points to clean his and Lydia's troubles, like saving Astrid from having her soul switched by the manipulative Jeremy, injecting a truth serum onto Rory to expose his gold-digging nature to Lydia, and quickly defeating both Rory and Delores with a Sandworm in a matador-like style.
- He has some standards that detract from his villainy:
- When Lydia tells him she wants to "get in", as in committing suicide, he's genuinely concerned and asks why.
- He seems to find Jeremy and Rory genuinely loathsome, happily and enthusiastically sending the former to hell with a gleeful "Later, f-cker!", and outing the latter as a money-grubbing slimeball only marrying Lydia for money.
- While he's a repulsive pervert (who puts his hands all over Barbara without her consent), he makes no such sexual moves against Lydia (though he's still implied to be lusting after her). Later on, he never makes a pass at Astrid, strictly focusing his attention on helping Lydia.
- He killed Delores after learning she poisoned him and revealed herself to be a cult leader that sucks souls, in which he shows disgust against this behavior.
Trivia[]
- In a early draft, he was far more darker and violent and attempted to kill Lydia’s sister by removing her organs. While this would still make him a Villainous Benchmark, he would be worse and less comedic.
- In the scrapped film Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, he is far more villainous in this script than he ever was in the first film. He drugs Lydia with a love potion to force her to marry him. During the climax, he commands an army of monsters to kill everyone by throwing them into a volcano and comes close to slitting Lydia's throat so they can be together forever. Had this film been made, he would have been Near Pure Evil instead.
