Antonio Diego, also known as Bane, is the secondary antagonist of the 1997 film Batman & Robin, the fourth installment of Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher's Batman film and comic series.
He is the strong enforcer for Poison Ivy, serving as her right-hand and bodyguard. He was created by Dr. Jason Woodrue and was given his name as intended to be a "bane of humanity".
He was portrayed by Michael Reid MacKay in his normal form. He was portrayed by the late Robert Swenson in his transformation.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- Even before Dr. Jason Woodrue's inhumane experiments turned him into Bane, Diego was a serial killer serving a life sentence in prison, implying he has multiple victims to his name. Thus, him being experimented on by Woodrue is not tragic as not only is his background not portrayed sympathetically, but he was already evil before being subjected to torturous experimentation's.
- He immediately joins with Ivy in her terrorism upon learning of her true intentions.
- He assisted Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy in their attempt in freezing all of Earth, which could have killed billions, including Batman, Robin, and Batgirl.
- He killed several Arkham Asylum guards by running them over to assist in freeing Mr. Freeze.
- He assaulted and scared a gang out of a Turkish bathhouse so Ivy can claim it as her new hideout.
- He accompanied Freeze to Gotham Observatory, assisted him in taking control of the new telescope, and placed Freeze's icicle bombs around the area.
- He tried to kill Robin and Batgirl by strangling them to death.
Why Doesn't He Stand Out?[]
- His participation in the attempted omnicide of Earth is enough to pass the general baseline, but him being at the behest of Poison Ivy causes him to fail the heinous standards. He fails the heinous standards to Dr. Jason Woodrue (who also fails the standard himself, albeit to a lesser extent) who, with lower resources, conducted implicitly deadly experiments on many prisoners and caused Poison Ivy to become as heinous as she is now (though it was accidental despite him not showing remorse for it). He also fails to Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze as he is just an extension of their attempt to freeze everyone on Earth to death and he mostly follows Ivy’s orders.
- He does not have enough personality for PE or NPE as he blindly follows Ivy's orders.
- He has no moral agency because he is feral in nature and was put under severe experiments which warped his mind far more than Poison Ivy.
- Whilst he was already evil before this, this doesn’t hold up when the experiments made him a mindless beast with no evidence that he kept his original personality.
