“ | I only tell you one time... Don't fuck me, Tony. Don't you ever try to fuck me. | „ |
~ Sosa's most famous quote as he warns Montana not to betray him. |
“ | I told you a long time ago, you fucking little monkey, not to fuck me! | „ |
~ Sosa to Tony Montana when the latter betrays him. |
Alejandro Sosa is the main antagonist of the 1983 crime drama Scarface.
He is a powerful international drug lord at Bolivia and Tony Montana's former friend up until the latter betrayed him. He at first has a good business relationship with Tony, but once Tony refuses to carry out a task Alejandro gives to him, Sosa cuts off ties with him.
He was portrayed by the late Paul Shenar.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He runs a large criminal drug trafficking business with it’s hold over Bolivia and America.
- He ordered the brutal death of his right man Omar Suarez after exposing him, having Alberto and The Skull beat him before hanging him from a helicopter, before subtly threatening Tony Montana with a similar fate if he ever tries to screw him over, although Omar deserves it for presumably causing the death of Tony’s friend Angel.
- While it is noted by Sosa that Omar was a police informative, it’s left vague whether he was being truthful.
- When a journalist was planning on exposing Sosa and his associates, he has Tony work with Alberto to blow up the journalist car in front of the UN. This action would have also caused the deaths of the journalist's wife and his two young children.
- It is implied by Alberto that Sosa will severely punish his minions if they fail in their goals and even more if they dare to betray him.
- When Tony refuses to assassinate the journalist and kills Alberto, he vehemently calls Tony for his betrayal after warning him about betraying him before hanging up out of pure rage, knowing well that Sosa had sealed Tony's fate altogether.
- He then sends his array of henchmen (including The Skull) to Miami to raid Tony's mansion, killing off eight of Tony's bodyguards. Although Tony fends off an onslaught of Sosa's henchmen, he was ultimately killed by the Skull, completely destroying Tony's empire altogether.
- He succeeds in his goals and presumably gets away with his actions, although it’s possible he didn’t as he was exposed by the journalist, leaving him in hot water with his associates and the American and Bolivian Law Enforcements.
- If that did not happen, however, then it's likely that he continues with his drug business and getting away with his crimes altogether.
- He is overall a sociopathic backstabber who is willing to betray anyone given the chance when they serve their purpose. Although, he is even more dangerous and willing to send his array of henchmen, including the Skull, to kill those who dare try and double-cross him, namely with Tony Montana.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- While he is utterly irredeemable and passes the baseline, he holds back on his resources far too much to go any further, thus failing the individual capability by extension as a result:
- This is because he is clearly the most powerful drug lord in the film and is the leader of a cartel, providing him with a ton of wealth, handful of resources and connections to the U.S. government and Bolivian military and his operation also runs in 7 different countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, and he also owns two drug factories.
- But despite how insane his resources are, what he does on-screen is causing 11 deaths, selling some drugs and ordering an attack on one mansion, he still doesn't do enough to go past what is expected for crime lords.
- He was not shown to be aware that the journalist had brought his wife and children to the UN, and its unknown on how (or if) Sosa reacted to this. Additionally, given Tony's coke-fuelled behavior as a result of his coke addiction, he never revealed to Sosa that the journalist had brought his wife and children with him, thus making it Fridge Horror. Because of this, there's no indication that he enjoys harming children altogether because of Tony's coke-induced rage that prevented him from ever thinking or explaining clearly, making him fail the heinous standard to Tony Montana himself (who already fails the standards due to killing dozens of people only out of self-defence).
- He also fails to Nacho Contreras, Frank Lopez and Hector the Toad, they committed much worse crimes than Sosa, with Nacho raping and sexually harassing several women offscreen, Frank selling a bunch of drugs and Hector cutting Angel up with a chainsaw in front of Tony.
