Alastor, also known as The Radio Demon, is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Angel Dust) of the adult animated musical series Hazbin Hotel. He is the archenemy of Vox, the boss of Husk and Niffty, and the arch-rival of Charlie's father, Lucifer Morningstar.

In life, he was a former serial killer before getting accidentally shot to death while hiding one of his murdered victims. After descending into hell, he quickly grew in ranks to become a very powerful overlord, kidnapping several overlords, torturing them, and broadcasting their screams on his radio show. Out of sheer boredom, he takes the role of Hazbin Hotel's facilities manager to help Princess Charlie Morningstar's dream, not because he actually believes in redemption, but because he wants to see sinners fail to do so.

He was voiced by Edward Bosco (speaking voice) and Gabriel C. Brown (singing voice) in the pilot, and is voiced by Amir Talai in the series proper.

His Evil Ranking

His Villainous Deeds

In General

  • When he was alive, he was a violent, cannibalistic serial killer who murdered several people before he was shot to death by a hunter while attempting to hide one of his victims' bodies in the forest.
  • He is extremely sadistic, as he takes great pleasure out of seeing others fail and/or be serious maimed.
  • He is incredibly arrogant, egotistical, narcissistic, and a jerk to almost everyone except his close friends or respected associates (including Mimzy, Niffty and Rosie), and to an extent Charlie.
  • The main reason he helps Charlie run and maintain the Hotel is simply to cure his boredom, as he doesn't actually believe in her cause, or at the very least he finds redemption to be too rare to actually be achievable.
  • He has an antagonistic rivalry with Vox and the Vees, as he takes pleasure in seeing their schemes fail, especially Vox, though the Vees arguably deserve it for being just as if not more sadistic than Alastor.
  • He's very enigmatic and the motivations for some of his actions are still unknown. It's very possibly that even his most heroic acts are out of self-prevention rather than a genuine desire to do good. It's also possible that he is being forced to do these heroic deeds by the entity who owns his soul.
  • He is a cannibal, both in Hell and when he was alive. In Hell, he eats inferior, less-powered demons to maintain his strength. Since he's part deer in Hell, he also eats deceased deer as meals.

The pilot

  • When Sir Pentious attempts to blow up the hotel in an attempt to challenge him, Alastor conjures up tentacles from a void realm to sadistically defeat Pentious. Despite Pentious arguably deserving it for attempting to mass murder the entire Hotel using a highly dangerous lazer gun on his blimp, it's still too brutal to be excused.

Season 1

  • While he did it to protect the Hotel (and to an extent his friend Mimzy), Alastor still brutally and sadistically murdered a group of loan sharks.
  • When Pentious tore a piece of his suit, Alastor flung the former several miles away, though again, Pentious arguably deserved it for yet again attempting to mass murder everyone in the Hotel using his blimp's lazer gun.
  • Being an Overlord, he has enslaved countless sinners to gain power, including the Hazbin Hotel's bartender Husk, whose soul is indebted to Alastor after he gambled his power away to him. Alastor (quite literally at times) keeps Husk on a tight leash, mocking Husk as a "pet", and it's implied to have done this to several other beings in the past.
    • When Husk brings up that Alastor is a hypocrite due to also being owned by another being, Alastor very angrily threatens Husk by saying he will "rip his soul apart" if he ever mentions that fact again. This greatly terrifies Husk and Alastor just sadistically smiles and moves on like nothing happened.
  • When Lucifer visited the hotel, Alastor antagonized and belittled him through a duet by insinuating that he was a better father to Charlie than Lucifer was, which really got under his skin and almost made the two of them fight had it not been for Mimzy interrupting last second.
    • Even before the duet, he mocked Lucifer's height, much to his anger.
  • He manipulates Charlie into making making a deal with him in exchange for information about Carmilla killing an Exorcist.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?

  • Most of his truly heinous crimes such as his kidnappings, mass murder, and mass torture are offscreen and merely mentioned, albeit still played for horror, and his full kill count is unknown, with his onscreen kill count amounting to a few loan sharks. This is contrast to Overlord Valentino, whose crimes of rape, physical assault, and emotional abuse are shown onscreen and severely affects Angel Dust.
    • Exactly how he tortures his victims and how severe torture affects them is purely Fridge Horror.
    • While comparing him to Adam and the Exorcists is unfair, he fails the standards to I.M.P's Blitzo, Moxxie, Loona, and Millie, who regularly assassinate people for a living and whose brutal crimes are shown onscreen. They manage a far larger onscreen kill count than Alastor in the episode "Spring Broken" where they graphically murder multiple innocent beach partygoers to win a parking spot. It must be emphasized that I.M.P. consist of 3 imps and a hellhound, who are well below Alastor, an overlord, in Hell's hierarchy, yet they still manage to be more heinous.
  • He commits far too many heroic deeds, even if they're likely more self-serving than genuinely altruistic.
    • Despite him not believing in redemption and joining the Hotel's staff for sadistic purposes, he nonetheless still does his job as the Hotel's facilities manager and makes the Hotel look more presentable as possible. He also doubles as a protector alongside Vaggie whenever a threat comes along to destroy or damage the establishment.
    • He defends the Hotel and its inhabitants in the Season 1 finale by agreeing to battle the sadistic and genocidal Adam, alongside the rest of the Hotel gang and the cannibals.
    • In the one-shot comic A Day in the After Life, he saves a female sheep demon from being raped or sexually assaulted by a butcher demon by eating the butcher demon alive.
  • He is too comedic to be Pure Evil or Near Pure Evil, as while is played for horror several times, there are just as many moments where his sadism and crimes are just played for laughs.
  • He cares for or shows respect to several people in the show:
    • He is implied to care for his mother dearly as he states in the pilot that he is very fond of her Jambalaya recipe and wished to share it to the Hotel's inhabitants.
    • He greatly respects Zestial, an elderly Overlord who is both feared but is rather affable.
    • Before he broke off their friendship after she manipulated him into using the Hotel as protection from loan sharks, he seems to have a genuine friendship with Mimzy.
    • He has a soft spot for Niffty and is one of the few characters he allows to touch him.
    • He has a very friendly relationship with fellow cannibal and overlord Rosie.
    • While he later shows disgust that he almost died for them, he's shown to have grown somewhat fond of the Hotel's inhabitants and enjoys their rapport greatly.
  • He breaks off his friendship with his close friend Mimzy after learning that she only used the Hotel as a means to protect herself from loan sharks which ended up putting the Hotel's inhabitants in danger, showing that he has standards.
  • His predicament of his soul being owned by an unknown entity is played for sympathy as he is greatly uncomfortable and distressed over this.
  • Despite his affability mostly being an act, he can act genuinely friendly at several points in the show, such as when he converses with his close friends like Rosie, Mimzy, and Niffty.

Trivia

  • While he's currently a Villainous Benchmark, this could easily change as the show goes on as his devious plan is eventually revealed and his crimes are further elaborated on and shown onscreen.
